Job Description

The DNAnexus team works with clients to deliver bioinformatics software solutions. As a DNAnexus Solutions Science Engineer, you will:

  • Become a trusted advisor to DNAnexus clients at all phases of their lifecycle, delivering training, developing solutions on occasion, and ensuring clients succeed with DNAnexus technologies and services.
  • Deepen your expertise in software, bioinformatics, and genomics by collaborating with scientists at the world's top clinical & research centers to leverage the power of the DNAnexus platform.

Specific responsibilities include:

Pre-sales

  • Provide scientific input into the sales process from opportunity qualification through needs identification, designing scientific pipelines, and performing feasibility studies. 
  • Promote confidence in DNAnexus technology and products through successful Proof of Concept projects.
  • Identify and define solutions that meet client requirements.

Post-sales

  • Be the “scientific face” of DNANexus to our clients. 
  • Use knowledge of DNAnexus technology solutions and domain knowledge to advise clients on how to best leverage DNANexus products for their success.

Qualifications

Must have

  • Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science or related biotechnology field; or M.S. plus at least 3 years experience in bioinformatics, biostatistics, genomics, statistical genetics, population genetics, systems biology, and/or translational research in either academic or industry settings.
  • Experience working with large-scale omics datasets, e.g. ENCODE, 1000 Genomes, ExAC/gnomAD, TCGA.
  • Familiarity with statistical genetics methods and tools including GWAS (PLINK, HAIL, BOLT-LMM, SAIGE, RVtests, SKAT, METAL), PheWAS (PLATO, PHESANT), Polygenic Risk Score analysis (PRS), Mendelian randomization, fine mapping, pathway analysis.
  • Knowledge of the benefits and challenges of cloud-based data management and analysis, including hands-on experience with cloud computing.
  • Demonstrated history of innovation, with the ability to independently identify creative, pragmatic solutions.

Desired

  • Basic understanding and competency with sales concepts and processes.
  • Previous experience in a client-facing science position working directly with partners in the life sciences industry is a strong plus.
  • Broad understanding of scientific concepts and computational techniques underlying modern genetics and genomics research (including transcriptomic, metabolomic, proteomic, and microbiome data), clinical diagnostics, biomarker discovery, and therapeutic development.
  • Familiarity with commonly used reference and annotation databases such as OMIM, ClinVar, gnomAD, and multi-omic QTL databases such as GTEx, eQTLgen, SPANR, and others.
  • Familiarity with integrated tools such as GDC DAVE, cBioPortal, i2b2 tranSMART, Spotfire, UCSC Genome Browser, and Ingenuity Pathway Analysis.
  • Experience with high-performance computing and database management tools such as SQL, Spark, Hive, and Hadoop.
  • Understanding of statistical models, machine learning, and AI, including knowledge of which techniques are optimal for solving different classes of problems.
  • Previous experience in a scientific client support role, in-house or in the field desired.
  • Excellent leadership qualities, interpersonal skills, and verbal and written communication skills.

Travel

  • Must be located (or willing to relocate) within 60 minutes of a major airport, but other locations and home offices will be considered.
  • DNAnexus Solutions Scientists are excited about working with clients face-to-face and may spend up to 25% of their time on non-local travel. Weekend travels will be limited.

Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity to join DNAnexus’ growing team. We are looking for a bioinformatician familiar with genomics who enjoys working hands-on with other scientists, software engineers, and clients to solve informatics challenges to join our team. As a member of the Bioinformatics team in the DNAnexus xVantage organization,  you will work with industry leaders across all aspects of genomics, gaining exposure to leading genomic science and application development. You will advise customers on best-practices, develop and integrate bioinformatics pipelines, data standards, methods, and datasets into the DNAnexus platform. You'll also be the scientific and technical liaison between DNAnexus and some of the highest-profile clients to help them fully leverage DNAnexus products and services to achieve their scientific objectives.  

Responsibilities

  • Research, integrate,  test and validate new bioinformatics methods on the DNAnexus Platform.
  • Ability to develop reusable, well-tested software in WDL, Python, R or shell scripting.
  • Work directly with clients to assess their scientific and bioinformatics needs and creatively propose solutions to meet or exceed these needs.
  • Advise customers on research and clinical pipelines incorporating multi-omics data of various types
  • Introduce DNAnexus to prospective customers and demonstrate how we can help them migrate to the cloud.
  • Teach new customers how to use the DNAnexus platform and SDK to develop their own analytic tools
  • Advance our relationships with scientific and technical users, achieve customer satisfaction objectives, and grow our active user base.
  • Synthesize learnings from customers to help direct our technology development roadmap. 

Requirements

  • Masters, or equivalent experience, in computer science, bioinformatics, computational biology, biology, genetics, or related discipline with a computational emphasis. A Ph.D. is desirable.
  • Strong programming ability in relevant framework and languages such as WDL, CWL, Nextflow, Python, R or shell scripting.
  • Hands-on experience with genomics sequence analysis, for example, using popular tools such as BWA and GATK.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills. This also requires the ability to effectively communicate complex topics with a diverse audience.
  • Enjoys interacting closely with DNAnexus customers.
  • Available for occasional travel (~25%) to conferences and to customer sites.
