About the Role

We are seeking a strategic and experienced Data Science Product Manager to lead our Learning & Playback team. In this highly strategic and impactful role, you will define the product strategy and vision that bridges data science, client needs, and business objectives. You will partner closely with Data Science, Engineering, Design, and other Product Managers to deliver on a roadmap that enhances our understanding of client preferences and improves the personalization of our recommendations.

Compensation and Benefits

This role will receive a competitive salary, benefits, and equity. The salary for US-based employees hired into this role will be aligned with the range below, which includes our three geographic areas. A variety of factors are considered when determining someone’s compensation–including a candidate’s professional background, experience, location, and performance.This position is eligible for new hire and ongoing grants of restricted stock units depending on employee and company performance. Salary Range
$144,200$212,000 USD

Required Experience (minimum):

What you’ll do:

  • Designs, configures, develops, tests, and supports informatics and data science solutions for a wide array of technical use cases;

What you’ll need to succeed:

About the Role:

Gusto’s Data Science team leverages Gusto’s rich dataset to guide product direction and decision-making. We operate full-stack, conducting analyses, prototyping and deploying predictive models and statistical tools both for internal use and for our customers. 

For this role, we are looking for a technical leader (an individual contributor) to drive machine learning and AI in the payment and risk domains.  You will build a model-driven risk platform to provide a trusted environment for Gusto Ecosystem. 

You’ll be working with an established team and seasoned payments and risk leaders in Engineering, Product, Design, Operation, Identity and Compliance. In this role, you’ll work cross functionally to build Platforms that span the entire breadth of the Payments and Risk Stacks, and use ML and AI to build a world- class, high secure platform that safeguards our users’ activities and money, and ensures unparalleled reliability. 

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Build and deploy machine learning models to identify, assess and mitigate risks 
  • Responsible for driving research in the problem space, working with stakeholders to understand model requirements, developing the model from scratch, deploying the model alongside your engineering counterparts, and monitoring and maintaining the model’s performance over time
  • Partner with Engineering, Design, and Product counterparts in Payment and Risk to solve complex cross functional problems
  • Develop scalable frameworks and libraries that enhance and contribute to the team’s core analysis and modeling capabilities
  • Identify new opportunities to leverage data to improve Gusto’s products and help risk management team to understand business requirements  and develop tailored solutions 
  • Present and communicate results to stakeholders across the company

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 8+ years experience conducting statistical analyses on large datasets and deep domain knowledge in machine learning. 
    • This could mean either a MS or PhD in a quantitative field with at least 5 years experience in a business environment, or BS or Data Science Bootcamp graduate with at least 8 years of experience working as a data scientist or a machine learning engineer in a business setting.
  • Experience applying a variety of statistical and modeling techniques using Python, R or another statistical modeling language, as indicated by familiarity with many of the following techniques - predictive modeling, anomaly detection, ensemble methods, natural language processing (NLP, optional).
  • Strong programming skills - comfortable with all phases of the data science development process, from initial analysis and model development all the way through to deployment
  • Excellent communication skills - able to effectively deliver findings and recommendations to non-technical stakeholders in a clear and compelling fashion
  • PhD or Masters plus equivalent experience in a quantitative field is a plus
  • Experience in the Fintech industry or risk management domain is a plus

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $195,000-$241,000/year in New York and $177,00- $219,000/year CAD in Toronto. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.


Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 daysper week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.

We expect Senior Machine Learning Scientists to be versatile and have a well-balanced set of skills. You will focus on model training and maintenance with significant capacity for research (developing novel model architectures), dataset construction, and model hardening (preparing the model and code for production pipelines).

Day-to-day, your responsibilities are to:

  • Work with subject matter experts and product owners to determine what questions should be asked and what questions can be answered.
  • Work with subject matter experts to curate, generate, and annotate data, and create optimal datasets following responsible data collection and model maintenance practices.
  • Answer questions and make trainable datasets from raw data, using efficient SQL queries and scripting languages, visualizing when necessary.
  • Develop and tune Machine Learning models, following best practices to select datasets, architectures, and model parameters.
  • Utilize, adopt, and fine-tune Language Models, including third-party LLMs (through prompt engineering and orchestration) and locally hosted LMs.
  • Stay current in the field - read research papers, experiment with new architectures and LLMs, and share your findings.

  • Write clean, efficient, and modular code, with automated tests and appropriate documentation.
  • Stay up to date with technology, make good technological choices, and be able to explain them to the organization.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience working with text data to build Deep Learning and ML models, both supervised and unsupervised. Experience with deep learning in other modalities such as vision and speech would be a strong bonus.
  • A strong understanding of the math and theory behind machine learning and deep learning.
  • Software engineering background with 3-5 years of experience (waived for a PhD in Computer Science or related: we use Python, SQL, Unix-based systems, git, and github for collaboration and review).
  • Machine / Deep Learning development skills, including experiment tracking (we use AWS SageMaker, Hugging Face, transformers, PyTorch, scikit-learn, Jupyter, Weights & Biases).

The Technical Program Management team is an integral part of the Instacart R&D organization. About You

Minimum Qualifications

  • 10+ years of post-graduation experience in a technology field, preferably as a technical program manager, product manager, software engineer or engineering manager (technical domain), or related technical discipline.
  • Experience in defining, delivering, derisking, and clearly exhibiting a combination of product and engineering prowess. You can clearly demonstrate how you are an angle-changer to outcomes.
  • Can wear multiple hats to create strategy memos, write functional specs, define high level technical requirements, derive insights from structured data, and leverage LLMs as a productivity multiplier in addition to defining program structure & strategy.
  • Experience in managing complex, ambiguous, multi-org programs end-to-end, from early conceptualization and definition to launch, throughout a software development lifecycle.

About the Role:

You will be responsible for overseeing the design, development, and deployment of machine learning models that power and enhance our financial platform. In this role, you will drive the creation of scalable machine learning solutions for personalized recommendations in the Sezzle marketplace, fraud detection, and credit risk assessment, utilizing a combination of cloud services, open-source tools, and proprietary algorithms.

Your leadership will be key in blending machine learning development and operations (MLOps) to automate and optimize the full lifecycle of our ML models. You will collaborate with a team of engineers and data scientists to build large-scale, high-quality solutions that address diverse challenges in the shopping and fintech space. You’ll ensure our AI-driven features are robust, efficient, and scalable as we continue to grow.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, Build, and Maintain Scalable ML Infrastructure: Lead the design and development of scalable machine learning infrastructure on AWS, utilizing services like AWS Sagemaker for efficient model training and deployment.
  • Collaborate with Product Teams: Work closely with product teams to develop MVPs for AI-driven features, ensuring quick iterations and market testing to refine solutions effectively.
  • Develop Monitoring & Alerting Frameworks: Create and enhance monitoring and alerting systems for machine learning models to ensure high performance, reliability, and minimal downtime.
  • Support Cross-Departmental AI Utilization: Enable various departments within the organization to leverage AI/ML models, including cutting-edge Generative AI solutions, for different use cases.
  • Provide Production Support: Offer expertise in debugging and resolving issues related to machine learning models in production, participating in on-call rotations for operational troubleshooting and incident resolution.
  • Scale ML Architecture: Design and scale machine learning architecture to support rapid user growth, leveraging deep knowledge of AWS and ML best practices to ensure robustness and efficiency.
  • Mentor and Elevate Team Skills: Conduct code reviews, mentor team members, and elevate overall team capabilities through knowledge sharing and collaboration.
  • Stay Ahead of the Curve: Stay updated with the latest advancements in machine learning technologies and AWS services, driving the adoption of cutting-edge solutions to maintain a competitive edge.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Machine Learning, Statistics, Physics, or a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 6+ years of experience in machine learning engineering, with demonstrated success in deploying scalable ML models in a production environment.

Ideal Skills & Experience:

  • Deep expertise in one or more of the following areas: machine learning, recommendation systems, pattern recognition, data mining, artificial intelligence, or related technical fields.
  • Proven track record of developing machine learning models from inception to business impact, demonstrating the ability to solve complex challenges with innovative solutions.
  • Proficiency with Python is required, and experience with Golang is a plus.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership in guiding teams, owning end-to-end projects, and setting the technical direction to achieve project goals efficiently.
  • Experience working with relational databases, data warehouses, and using SQL to explore them.
  • Strong familiarity with AWS cloud services, especially in deploying and managing machine learning solutions and scaling them in a cost-effective manner.
  • Knowledgeable in Kubernetes, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines for efficient deployment and management of ML models.
  • Comfortable with monitoring and observability tools tailored for machine learning models (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, AWS CloudWatch) and experienced in developing recommender systems or enhancing user experiences through personalized recommendations.
  • Solid foundation in data processing and pipeline frameworks (e.g., Apache Spark, Kafka) for handling real-time data streams.
