Khan Academy is hiring a Remote Senior Product Designer, Growth

ABOUT KHAN ACADEMY

Khan Academy is a nonprofit with the mission to deliver a free, world-class education to anyone, anywhere. Our proven learning platform offers free, high-quality supplemental learning content and practice that cover Pre-K - 12th grade and early college core academic subjects, focusing on math and science. We have over 155 million registered learners globally and are committed to improving learning outcomes for students worldwide, focusing on learners in historically under-resourced communities.

OUR COMMUNITY

Our students, teachers, and parents come from all walks of life, and so do we. Our team includes people from academia, traditional/non-traditional education, big tech companies, and tiny startups. We hire great people from diverse backgrounds and experiences because it makes our company stronger. We value diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging as necessary to achieve our mission and impact the communities we serve. We know that transforming education starts in-house with learning about ourselves and our colleagues. We strive to be world-class in investing in our people and commit to developing you as a professional.

THE ROLE

Imagine being a teacher in Sarasota, Florida, four years after the pandemic started, with a classroom full of 6th graders who haven’t had a normal year of school or learning since 2019. It’s the reality of so many educators and students who use Khan Academy – and our team is uniquely positioned to help them when they need it most.

We have no end of fascinating challenges that can only be solved with a deep empathy for our users, diligent product & UX thinking, and a strong drive to make a positive impact. Some questions we’re working on answering right now are:

  • How do we support teachers who are dealing with the impact that the pandemic had on learning?
  • How do we help students with learning gaps catch up to their grade level?
  • How do we center schools serving historically under-resourced communities in our product design and development?
  • How do we reach more school districts so our learning experience gets used in more classrooms?
  • …and more

The best part? Our work matters: catch Sal talking to CNBC about low math and reading test scores.

We are looking for a Senior Product Designer to embed within our Product Growth team and help us scale product adoption among users. The heart of this role is identifying opportunities to improve the user journey from acquisition to engagement, and designing experiences and features that contribute to the success of our products. You will help drive sign up conversion and ensure that new users find it easy and rewarding to use Khan Academy and Khanmigo regularly.

Some of the projects you will work on:

  • Experimenting with different conversion strategies for core Khan Academy.
  • Experimenting with different conversion strategies and growth loops for Khanmigo.
  • Improving time-to-value for new Khanmigo signups.
  • Supporting scaling into new international markets.

You will play a vital role on an inclusive, collaborative, small but mighty Design team, helping us fulfill the mission of the organization: to provide a free, world-class education to anyone, anywhere. Design has a seat on the Product Leadership Team, making Design a keystone in the way we “deliver wow” (one of our values), and means that you’ll never have to justify the importance of your work or why you should be included.

We genuinely care about people and value compassion in our everyday interactions. You’ll be able to be yourself, feel valued, supported, learn and grow, no matter how experienced you are. Even if you don’t check every box (no one does), we encourage you to apply.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Drive the end-to-end design strategy and execution for Product Growth projects, from early concepts to polished user experiences.
  • Deliver design solutions that balance the company’s mission, a seamless branded experience for end users, and ease of implementation.
  • Autonomously move your own work forward in partnership with PM and Eng, using proactive communication and effective planning strategies.
  • Cultivate a growth mindset (another one of our values) by soliciting feedback on solutions from internal stakeholders, senior leadership, and the Design team during critiques.
  • Seek out, understand, incorporate and communicate user feedback throughout the design process, in partnership with UX Research and Data.
  • Build alignment across diverse teams by successfully presenting ideas to a range of teams and stakeholders across Khan Academy.
  • Write about, present, and share what you have learned, both internally and with the wider Design community via our blog and industry events.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • 5+ years of experience as a product/UX designer.
  • 3+ years of experience designing on product-led growth teams.
  • Comfortable building experiences with Webflow  and Figma (show us in your portfolio).
  • Strong across interaction design, prototyping, and information architecture, with a keen eye for visual design and experience using quant/qual to make data-informed decisions.
  • Track record of executing successful growth strategy through your design skill set, relationship building, and team alignment on desired outcomes.
  • Ability to juggle ambiguous and broad problems/opportunities along with smaller, well-defined projects.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills for diverse audiences with neurodivergent and neurotypical, technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Comfortable in ambiguous situations and dynamic environments that run similar to a startup, where you regularly interact with and gather feedback from Senior Leadership.
  • Scrappy, have a bias toward action, and can move quickly.
  • Lean approach to delivering design solutions and regularly ask yourself: how do we learn quickly and ship regularly? What’s the most concise experience we can deliver that still provides value?
  • Motivated by our company mission and a desire to tangibly improve the lives of millions by applying your talents.
  • Bonus if you have experience with freemium models.
  • Bonus if you have strong copywriting skills (show us in your portfolio) and a good sense of humor.

Qualities we value in ourselves, and those who join our team:

  • Introspective, mature, low-ego, and emotionally intelligent.
  • Invested in your own growth and the growth of our Design team colleagues.
  • Proactively seek out the people/information you need to move work forward and unblock yourself.
  • High comfort level working within a strong top-down product and pedagogical vision led by our CEO, Sal Khan, and our Chief Learning Officer, Kristen DiCerbo, PhD.
  • Able to balance the immediate tactical needs of helping deliver and ship features with scouting ahead for what’s next.
  • Willing to roll your sleeves up and pitch in when a project goes off-script.
  • Passionate about education and designing engaging learning experiences, deeply curious about how and why people learn.

NOTE: Submitting a portfolio with your application is required. We're looking for a portfolio that highlights the parts of your background and experience that are relevant to the job description. Applications without a portfolio link or attachment (plus password if required) will not be considered.

Our values

We’re trying to build a healthy, values-driven culture. We want to be:

  • Optimistic:We see an amazing future ahead, and want to inspire others to share in it. This is both internal—building each other up and looking for the best in people—and external—we know open source is awesome, and we want to make it even better.

  • Practical:We know words and ideas alone won’t change lives. We help people most by creating a pragmatic, viable, and sustainable business that works for everyone. So we care about usability, design, and honest assessment of costs and benefits.

  • Additive:We want an environment that encourages and inspires growth, both for individuals and for the open source community as a whole. That means embracing a growth mindset, and valuing culture-add over culture-fit.

  • Inclusive:We believe technology will be stronger when it better reflects the voices and ideas of society as a whole. So we want people from different backgrounds and experiences to not just be represented, but to be heard, valued, and flourish. We do not tolerate discrimination or harassment.

To find out more about how we live these in practice, we’ve written more aboutliving our values “inside and out”

We get together in person 2-4 times a year, so some ability to travel is required (though we aim not to require travel on weekends). We’ve written more about how we do remote work here, here, andhere

We believe in the urgency of our mission and the importance of doing good work, but also know this is a marathon and not a sprint. Hours are flexible when necessary to meet personal needs (like child, medical, or elder care).

Compensation, benefits and career

Tidelift’sapproach to compensationis designed to ensure that we are staying true to our core values of being optimistic, additive, inclusive, and practical. We do this by:

  • Rewarding tenure: We are optimists, believing that each of us is bringing our best to work each day. In this spirit, we provide predetermined raises of at least 3% each year based on the belief that you are working hard and learning more about Tidelift and your role, making yourself more valuable to the company every day. Each year we will refresh our model for rewarding tenure with new market data, and share an updated compensation trajectory with you.

  • Holding firmly to a no-negotiation policy: In the spirit of our values to be inclusive and additive, we believe employees hired to perform the same role should receive the same compensation, regardless of location, negotiation prowess, prior salary, or years of experience prior to joining Tidelift. All Tidelift offers have compensation packages that are determined prior to the start of recruitment. This, along with a structured interview process, is intended to mitigate the effects of bothshifting criteria biasand theask gapon wages within Tidelift, and is an essential element of our equity, diversity, and inclusion strategy.

  • Sharing our process transparently. You and your colleagues are doing important work, and we want to compensate you fairly in return. We transparently document how we approach compensation at Tidelift, including our methodology for calculating initial offers, raises, and promotions, so that you know exactly what you can expect from us over your career here.
