Who are we looking for?
The role of Tech Lead at CareerPlug exists as a function to facilitate value externally for our customers and internally for our processes and teams. 

Tech Leads do this by planning, writing, and launching new features/product improvements that create stable, easy-to-use software products for CareerPlug’s customers. As well as by empowering members of their squads to participate and contribute to the processes and continuous improvement of the engineering organization.

Tech Leads at CareerPlug will exhibit the following key traits:

  • Being an excellent collaborator.
    • Work closely with your squad, QA, Design, and other stakeholders to successfully solve problems for CareerPlugs customers.
  • Building a trusted relationship with your team by:
    • Having a track record of delivering on your commitments.
    • Owning your mistakes.
    • Having a positive mindset and being an enabler.
    • Communicate clearly. Your productivity is now less important than the productivity of the whole squad. Listen, blog, document, and speak to your squad's needs.
  • Having a strong product mindset.
    • Think from the perspective of CareerPlug's customers, and what they would find valuable. 
      • i.e. Start with the product, not the implementation.
    • Strive to build the smallest, most simple thing to meet our customers' needs.
  • Being able to quickly assess feasibility.
    • Lead technical decisions. This does not mean that Tech Leads are making all of the decisions, but that you facilitate them and find resolutions.
    • Assess is something possible to build / will it be easy or hard / roughly how long will it take (or ideally if there is a version that is possible within a given appetite)?
    • Provide alternative solutions to problems by providing technical insights into solutions that others may not be aware are possible.
  • Always working to open up possibilities.
    • Offer multiple paths forward for solving problems, while being able to discuss trade-offs with other stakeholders.
  • Being an enabler of ideas.
    • When evaluating ideas, strive to find ways to make it easy to try, rather than poking holes in it and find reasons why it won’t work.
    • Project scope/plan. Facilitate breaking down work into deliverables with your squad such that we are in a position to tackle the riskiest assumptions first and we are learning and launching along the way.
Measurable Outcomes: 
  • Desired outcomes as measured by a high percentage of the bets made are achieved within the appetites given
  • Desired quality as measured by a low # of valid bugs introduced for your squad
  • Desired reliability and trust as measured by a high % of shaped work completed on time (and when we will likely miss, it is communicated early)

Remote: This is a fully remote role with travel included to Austin, TX at least two times per year. Our team is growing as rapidly as our client base and we are always looking for top talent to join our team. Our leadership is dedicated to making CareerPlug one of the best places to work in Austin.

This role pays a base salary between $145,000 - $161,000 with an additional $10,000 in bonus potential. Check out our philosophy on pay ranges to get a better idea of how we handle deciding what the offer should be.

  • Early = $145,000 base salary
  • Mid = $153,000 base salary
  • Advanced = $161,000 base salary

This is a remote position.

Compensation: $155,000.00 - $171,000.00 per year

Tech Lead at CitizenLab (Methods squad)

As a Tech Lead at CitizenLab, your goal is to help the engineers align on task decomposition and planning, and guiding the high-level technical choices. Next to coaching and enabling your squad colleagues to contribute more effectively, you also actively contribute code yourself. Your small, cross-functional squad consist of a product manager, designer, and 3-5 cross-functional engineers.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Taking responsibility for the week-to-week planning of the squad, in close collaboration with your engineering colleagues and product manager.

  • Guiding the squad through technical specificationsand decomposition of tasks.

  • Giving feedback to the designer and product manager onfeasibility and effort of future work.

  • Follow up on feature progress and report to the product manager and CTO.

  • Identifying blockers and issues early on, and working together with the squad to prevent them.

  • Implementing continuous process improvements to boost developer experience and productivity.

  • Acting as a sounding board to developers and helping resolve technical challenges.

  • Aligning with the CTO and lead architect on thetechnical directionof the product.

  • Contributing codeyourself, when all of the above has been taken care of.
