We think of design across the entire customer journey. This includes the UI/UX for the tools that help our users design products, our websites and marketing explaining how to use those tools, and our storytelling and content that inspires our users. We focus on designing and building tools that make it easy for anyone to make beautifully printed products. About the Job

You’ll work on our Product and Design team, collaborating with Marketing as well as product owners, to help conceptualize, design, and execute across our digital & print marketing channels. You’ll help us communicate the quality and care that goes into our products and software tools. For some users, your work will be their first introduction to printing with us, and will help give them the confidence and understanding to be successful. You’ll help us produce high quality marketing campaigns that span across a variety of channels all while pushing the boundaries of those mediums.

We’re looking for someone with:

• Great visual communication skills and a passion for the pushing the boundaries of digital design.
• A deep understanding of core design principals including typography, balance, layout, and color.
• An appreciation for great user experiences and enthusiasm about guiding and impacting an entire user journey.

You will:

• Design experiences across our websites and other communication channels, including social media and even print when appropriate. 
• Collaborate with our Marketing team to craft marketing strategies, and storytelling, all with a consistent voice.
• Manage your own time and coordinate the full design flow for projects — from the initial pitch to release, as well as on-going iterations.
• Help establish and grow brand consistency throughout our multiple brands, design systems, and various touch points.
• Go deep where appropriate — be that sweating the visual weight of your mono line icon, or elevating website interactions.
• Work with other designers on larger projects and team-wide initiatives like design systems and imagery and illustration guidelines.
• Collaborate with other designers and developers to grow your understanding across the stack.
• Partner with our wider Product team to do testing and research, ensuring user understanding and optimizing conversion.

Our production facilities are offices are located in Eagan, MN and our marketing and creative departments primarily work based in Minnesota in a hybrid capacity. We’ve long believed in hiring the best talent regardless of location, but at a minimum this role should expect some time on site in Minnesota learning about the quality products we make and helping produce content to share those stories. About the Team

Within a company of almost 300 people, fewer than 30 are on our Product, Design & Engineering teams. We like to think of ourselves as a tiny startup within an established organization. Our Product & Design team partners with Engineering to build in-house software solutions. Our goal when it comes to digital tools is to enable businesses and individuals, both large and small, to successfully design, print, and sell physical printed goods.

About the Role

Beyond great ideas, building amazing software takes great planning and coordination. You’ll help us determine what to build — and collaborate closely with in-house designers & engineers to determine what, how, and when we should prioritize projects. For this role, you’ll be collaborating closely with our Commerce Engineering Team which builds software that makes it possible to order our products online. Beyond just enabling users to purchase their own products, the commerce team is also building marketplace solutions enabling customers to collaborate with their clients enabling sales online.

You are:

• Experienced with software & service project management.
• A design-focused thinker with an appreciation for great user experiences and enthusiasm about guiding and impacting an entire user journey.
• Technically adept and can stay up to speed in a software engineering-focused conversation.
• Detail-oriented with an ability to identify a variety of customer use cases and product details to help our clients succeed.
• An excellent written & verbal communicator who can help others understand complex ideas or goals through paragraphs and presentations.

You will:

• Craft our product story by understanding our photographer, end-user, and partner needs.
• Help define our product strategy by gathering internal and external requirements.
• Brainstorm and refine pitches for features that solve end-user problems.
• Partner with engineering, by translating product requirements into development-ready use cases, and then drive project implementation, testing, launch, and refinement.
• Utilize software tools to own prioritization and help schedule short and long-term priorities.
• Collaborate with UI/UX designers to guide the creation of interfaces and solutions.
• Communicate status across the organization, making sure everyone is on the same page.
• Lead user research, testing, and surveying to ensure we’re building solutions that meet our customer's needs.
• Partner with marketing and design on crafting strategies and communicating feature updates and enhancements.

About the Job  

You’ll work on a small team of engineers to build a robust, scalable, and intuitive set of tools and APIs that allow customers to configure and order our products. You’ll work closely with front-end and backend engineers on several teams within WHCC. We encourage everyone to collaborate across roles to help find the best solutions possible. Additionally, third parties integrate our platform APIs and depend on us to keep their businesses going.  

Your skills:  

• Have a strong interest in building and understanding systems; if you have proven experience doing so, that’s even better  

• Be able to jump between frameworks, databases, and languages while debugging complex problems across an entire platform  

• Feel comfortable writing, reviewing, and testing code (Typescript/JavaScript and Python are preferred but not required) 

• Familiarity with AWS (Lambda functions primarily) is preferred, but not required 

You will:  

• Design, build, and maintain scalable services, APIs, and tools used by internal and external engineering teams  

• Debug production issues across many services and levels of the platform  

• Work collaboratively with technical and business teams to provide the best possible experience for our photographers’ clients

Projects you could work on:  

• This is primarily a backend position, while there are opportunities for frontend work if interested, most of the projects revolve around HTTP requests, AWS Lambda functions, and MongoDB scripts  

• Write Python code to generate PDF previews of products customized in our web product editors 

• Building or modifying endpoints in Hapi to ease integration of external partners by allowing them to pass in supplemental data when ordering photos generated by our web product editors 

• Debugging and maintaining internal tools used by designers to generate high fidelity card designs, made in Illustrator, into data our web product editors can understand and render

• Have experience using traditional server-rendered techniques 

• Be able to jump between frameworks, databases, and languages while debugging complex problems across an entire platform 

• Have a pragmatic perspective about software development 

• Feel comfortable writing, reviewing, and testing code

• PHP, Node.js, JavaScript, TypeScript 

• PostgreSQL, MongoDB 

• Symfony, API Platform, React, twig, composer, npm, docker 

• EC2, Beanstalk, RDS, Elasticache, CodePipeline 

You will: 

• Design, build, and maintain scalable services within our commerce platform 

• Develop web applications with an eye towards simplicity, usability, and performance 

• Work collaboratively with technical and business team members to design, develop, and maintain web applications serving the needs of photographers 

• Strive for a strong and consistent client experience for all who use the WHCC Platform – developers or otherwise
