Job Description

The Public Web team is a full-stack engineering team responsible for the architecture, infrastructure and site reliability of Square’s marketing website - www.squareup.com. Square’s public website is one of the key surface areas to drive consideration and conversion with prospective Sellers. The website supports both self-onboarded (signup/download the app) and sales-onboarded (lead form submission/MQL) paths, making it a critical front door for window shoppers and purchasing moments. 

We have an exciting time ahead of us with key initiatives such as a full site redesign to give it soul and simplify discovery for our customers. We are working with product and design teams to redefine information architecture and build an audience focused journey. We are also in a platform re-architecture journey where we are moving to a microservices architecture with goals to improve resiliency, page performance, page build time and developer experience. 

Square recently consolidated all members of our web engineering discipline into a centralized organization, specifically to elevate our velocity and quality. You will be part of this transformational time, to help establish the blueprint for modern and high velocity front-end development at scale, and work with other experts in the web engineering org.

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Public Web team, you will: 

  • Build and support Square’s Public Web - a surface used by millions of Square sellers to discover the ecosystem of Square’s offerings - ensuring we are proud to sign our names to the experiences we enable there

  • Help build a Design System that allows Design Technologists and Content Authors to build pages easily in low-code and no-code manners

  • Identify and explore ways to improve application architecture, testing, and build pipeline

  • Continually seek to optimize and improve the seller’s and internal customer’s experience

  • Iterate rapidly on features, services, and processes

  • Hold yourself, and your teammates, accountable to the highest standards of engineering that enables Square to safely move billions of dollars in payments and allow our customers to trust us with their sensitive data

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of relevant industry experience with a BS Degree in Computer Science or equivalent

  • Programming depth with JavaScript and Typescript

  • Proficiency with CI pipelines and cloud infrastructure (mainly AWS and Cloudflare)

  • Excellence in test coverage (unit, and end-to-end)

  • Experience being on-call, and are comfortable working under pressure

  • Enjoy working in a collaborative environment and partner with other cross-disciplinary teams (designers, design technologists, product managers, data scientists) to achieve optimal results

  • An openness to collaboration, feedback and willingness to grow as an engineer

  • A sense of customer empathy and desire to influence the product direction

  • Understanding and curiosity in creating well thought out, scalable, low-latency, global systems

The Role

A Senior Frontend Software Engineer on the DISCO team assists as both a major contributor and role model in building robust, reusable, and user friendly web and mobile components, interfacing with platform APIs, and finding elegant solutions to complex problems. They guide, mentor and collaborate with other engineers; employ strategic thinking and design knowledge to solve problems; collaborate with cross-functional teams; and help drive a culture of software engineering excellence.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Build for DISCO - Develop and release with React for the web and mobile applications and collaborate on our technical vision
  • Write production-ready code that is clean, scalable and performance optimised, delivering a beautiful, industry leading user experience
  • Design with performance, security, and scale in mind.
  • Participate in a culture of documentation and knowledge-sharing within your team and with stakeholders
  • Make your code easily testable/understood by others, and account for edge cases and errors
  • Contribute to the implementation of tools and processes for development, productivity, testing, and debugging code
  • Lead planning and discussions for complex projects. Actively participate and enhance the SDLC processes. Advocate for delivering value in increments.
  • Keep learning and stay up to date with the latest relevant technologies
  • Be an inspiration and mentor for more junior members of the team.
  • 7+ years software engineering
  • 5+ years writing React and ES6 with modern libraries and frameworks, such as Redux
  • Basic React Native experience
  • Expert understanding of frontend architecture in large scale apps, routing, code splitting, performance and bundle size optimization, web markup, HTML5, CSS3 and CSS pre-processors
  • Understanding of real time/asynchronous request handling, partial page updates, AJAX, websockets and service workers
  • Experience with front end ecosystem tools such as Webpack, Javascript testing frameworks, package managers, TypeScript/Flow
  • Written and verbal fluency in English
  • Proficiency in GIT source control

You'll care about writing. Our team is remote and written communication is key. In addition to caring about a well-crafted email and a succinct conference abstract, you understand that good writing is good UX.

Qualifications

  • Created a modular front-end design system for an oceanographic data portal.
  • Built an open-source React framework for quickly implementing Leaflet-based map interfaces.

Here are the guidelines we're looking at to gauge experience and skill set:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, or similar field of study from an accredited university preferred (will consider equivalent professional experience in lieu of degree).
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in software and application development.
  • Expert in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Strong visual and user interface design skills.
  • Experience with React or other front-end Javascript frameworks.
  • Experience with Git (or another SCM tool) and build tools like Gulp, Grunt, and Webpack.
  • Basic understanding of programming languages and frameworks like Python, Ruby, and Rails.
  • Experience with templating engines for generating dynamic content.
  • Ability to independently explore and evaluate different tooling options and open-source solutions, considering factors like stability, popularity, and suitability for the project's requirements.
  • Capability to work closely with scientists to understand their needs for custom visualizations and translate those requirements into technical solutions.
  • Experience with mapping and geospatial front-end development (Leaflet, Mapbox, GeoJSON, STAC) is a big plus.
  • Experience developing interactive dashboards with widgets, such as those created with Tableau or similar tools.
  • Outstanding all-round communication skills and ability to work collaboratively and proficiently in a remote environment.

What you'll do

As a Frontend Engineer on the Marketing Engineering team, you will be responsible for building and maintaining the layouts which comprise our marketing website, blog, marketing automation, and more. You will build Contentful content models and contribute to a redesign project. You’ll bring industry best practices for standing up single page applications/custom apps, and a solid understanding of modern frontend development.

  • Use tools, frameworks, and libraries to help the front-end team build a better www.cloudflare.com and Cloudflare Blog.
  • We’re currently using Gatsby; bonus points if you have worked with Astro JS, as we have adopted this architecture.
  • Review work from your peers throughout all stages of the development lifecycle
  • Support fellow team members through constructive code reviews and pair programming to help bring out their best work

Qualifications

  • Practical work experience (& up-to-date theoretical knowledge) with React & Redux is essential
  • 5+ years of professional experience as a front-end JavaScript developer
  • 2+ years in design and building SPA applications using an application building framework / library (Angular 1.x/2.x, React, Ember, Aurelia, Vue, etc.)
  • Familiarity (typical everyday usage scenarios) with modern JavaScript development toolset (“build” tools, packaging, linting, transpilers)
