Data is a critical component of our product and our mission as a data store team is to provide a highly available, reliable, secure and performant transactional persistent data layer which we do by leveraging our vast experience and through the skillful use of automation. We are looking for a Senior Database Reliability Engineer (DBRE) to join our team and bring further expertise working in large-scale environments with zero downtime to further help us on our mission. 

We would love to hear from you if you are passionate about solving problems at scale with automation, testing, and tuning. The ideal candidate exemplifies the ethics of, “If you have to do something more than once, automate it” and who can rapidly self-educate on new concepts and tooling. 


What you will be working on: 
As a Database Reliability Engineer, you will have ownership of all technical aspects of our data services tier from ground up. As a team we are also particularly committed to two Okta Engineering mantras "Always On" and "No Mysteries". Reporting to the Manager of Site Reliability Engineering, you will partner with our core product engineers, performance engineers, site reliability engineers, and growing DBRE team, working on scaling, securing, and tuning our infrastructure be it self managed MySQL, RDS Aurora PostgreSQL/MySQL or CloudSQL.

Additionally, you will play a key role as we evolve our architecture to meet the demands of Okta's enormous growth and the hundreds of millions of users who rely on us to provide uninterrupted access to business-critical enterprise and consumer applications. 

  • Ensure effective performance and 24X7 availability of the production database tier
  •  Design, automate and document operational processes, tasks, and configuration management.
  • Coordinate efforts towards performance tuning, scaling and benchmarking the data services infrastructure.
  • Contribute to automation amongst other things using ansible plays, configuration management using chef and infrastructure as code using terraform. 

What do you bring to Okta: 

  • First and foremost a positive team playing attitude - we are a team and we support each other so we can provide the best service for our customers.
  • Extensive experience managing MySQL 5.7/8, PostgreSQL 11-15 at scale in a cloud environment as well as RDS Aurora MySQL/PostgreSQL and or CloudSQL
  • Proficient in a Linux environment, including Linux internals and tuning
  • Proficiency with terraform, chef, ansible
  • Proficient writing Go/Python/Ruby/Shell
  • Experience working with AWS (EC2 / EBS / S3 / RDS) or equivalent

Below is the annual base salary range for candidates located in California, Colorado, New York and Washington. Your actual base salary will depend on factors such as your skills, qualifications, experience, and work location. In addition, Okta offers equity (where applicable), bonus, and benefits, including health, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), flexible spending account, and paid leave (including PTO and parental leave) in accordance with our applicable plans and policies. The annual base salary range for this position for candidates located in California (excluding San Francisco Bay Area), Colorado, New York, and Washington is between:
$132,000$198,000 USD
The annual base salary range for this position for candidates located in the San Francisco Bay area is between:
$148,000$222,000 USD

Desirable:

Hybrid Working

About the Role:

Working within our engineering team, you will be responsible for configuring, monitoring and improving our PostgreSQL databases. This will include:

Working with our teams to understand their database needs and make adjustments

Monitoring and optimising the performance of databases

Query analysis to understand how our databases are being used

Allocating for systems requirements and planning future needs

Managing and monitoring on data replication

Actively seeking new approaches to how we manage/monitor/configure our databases 

The ideal candidate will have experience in the following: 

  • Expert knowledge of Postgres with at least 3 years hands on experience of database administration
  • Experience of using infrastructure as code. Preferably Terraform 
  • Experience of software development. Preferably Java
  • Self motivated person able to drive change, take initiative and own their work
  • Strong ability to solve complex technical problems
  • Ability to communicate at all levels of the business to understand the users needs 

Desirable:

  • Experience working in cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure) 
  • Knowledge of docker, or Kubernetes 
  • Experience working in cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure) 
  • Used to working at a senior level able to communicate effectively to achieve their goals

Salary Range 

Pay ranges vary based on multiple factors including, without limitation, skill sets, education, responsibilities, experience, and geographical market. The salary/wage and job title for this opening will be based on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience and may be outside this range.
