Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Data Platforms Solutions Architect to join our team. This role goes beyond traditional architecture and has a strong emphasis on business development applications of the technology knowledge. As a Solutions Architect, you will collaborate with clients and internal teams to design and present tailored data platform solutions, custom to various customer opportunities needs.

You will leverage your hands-on experience with modern data engineering tools paired with your ability to provide strategic insights during presales engagements.

Responsibilities: 

 

  • Drive innovation in Data & AI Business Opportunities: actively contribute to business development by identifying opportunities, understanding client needs, and proposing innovative data platform solutions based on modern cloud accelerators and frameworks (e.g. Databricks, Snowflake, Synapse);
  • Tailor client focused solutions:partner with sales teams to deliver compelling technical presentations, demonstrations, and proofs of concept while being able to influence clients' strategic decisions by showcasing the value of data engineering and platform architectures tailored to their needs;
  • Lead discovery and shape solutions:Drive as a leader the Discovery Workshops with new clients, aiming on collecting the business requirements and work with the BA/PO in documenting these requirements;
  • Design operational-fit architectures: Carefully analyse all the use-cases of the data platform for provided business added value (e.g. pipelines for BI, AI driven decision-making, data mesh self-service architectures);
  • Offer technical advisory: Guide clients through tool selection and best practices in data platform design, including pitching the reasoning behind certain choices; pitch the end-to-end solution to the internal and end-customer stakeholders;
  • Advance technical expertise:Design and implement scalable, secure, and high-performance data platforms, including data lakes, warehouses, and integration pipelines;
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams:partner with stakeholders to align business goals with technology solutions, proposing practical models to calculate the Total-cost-of-ownership (TCO);
  • Technical leadership: Implement the PoCs associated with the provided high-level solution designs and lead the mid-senior data engineers in transforming the PoC into the Production MVP.

 

Qualifications

Must have:

  • 7+ years of experience in data engineering, focusing on data governance, data lakes, pipelines, and ETL/ELT processes;
  • 3+ years of experience in a Data Platforms Solutions Architect role, leading platform design and implementation;
  • Expertise in data lake platforms like Databricks, Azure Data Lake, AWS Lake Formation, or Google BigQuery;
  • Proficiency in data processing frameworks (Apache Spark, Kafka, Flink) and orchestration tools (Airflow, ADF, AWS Step Functions);
  • Strong knowledge of security & governance (RBAC, encryption, GDPR, HIPAA compliance) and distributed storage systems (Parquet, ORC, Delta Lake);
  • Experience with cloud-native platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and IaC tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, or Bicep);
  • Proficiency in automation, DevOps, and observability using tools like DataDog, Prometheus, or cloud-native monitoring;
  • Strong skills in Python, SQL, or Scala for building data transformations and performance-optimized models (star, snowflake, data vault);
  • Pre-sales support experience, including RFPs, technical proposals, and business development support;
  • Strong communication & leadership skills, with the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to have:

 

  • Experience integrating data lakes with machine learning platforms like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or cloud-based AI/ML services (e.g., AWS SageMaker, Azure ML, Google Vertex AI);
  • Familiarity with feature stores and their role in operationalizing ML (e.g., Feast, Databricks Feature Store);
  • Understanding of data modeling, data ingestion, and ETL/ELT processes tailored for AI/ML use cases;
  • A plus are the following certifications: Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Google Professional Cloud Architect, Databricks Certified Data Engineer Professional, Snowflake Advanced Architect Certification, Certified AI Practitioner (CAIP).

About the Role

In this role, you will be responsible for designing, building, and managing the information infrastructure systems used to collect, store, process, and distribute production and reporting data. This role will work closely with software and data engineers, as well as data scientists, to deploy Applied Science services. This role will also interact with business analysts and technical marketing teams to ensure they have the data necessary to complete their analyses and campaigns.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field

Your day-to-day   

This role is all about collaborating across disciplines to test hypotheses and make a difference to customers. Together you’ll build and support a particular part of Monzo. Our product squads belong to our widercollectives(a word we use to describe self-governing business units of ~100 people). They are; Money, Borrowing, Fincrime, Customer Operations, Platform, Personal Banking & Business Banking. They’re all looking for additional Backend Engineers right now, we do a standard interview process across all our collectives and at the end we will find the best match for you based on your skills, experience, preferences and aligning with the business need! 

Our backend engineers have a variety of different backgrounds. As long as you enjoy learning new things, we’d love to talk to you. We do not ask for formal qualifications or degree requirements for any of our engineering roles.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data scientists and software engineers to integrate AI solutions developed by other elements of CDAO or the DoD community into Search Portfolio products when appropriate
  • Optimize AI models for performance, scalability, and efficiency, leveraging cloud-based resources and distributed computing frameworks, specifically Apache Spark/Databricks. Ability to adapt code base to also run using GPU enabled Kubernetes clusters.
  • Stay updated on and contribute to the latest advancements in AI research, applying new findings to improve Search Portfolio products
  • Manage the lifecycle of AI/ML components used in Search Portfolio products from research and development to deployment and optimization
  • Applies analytical methodologies to diagnose data-related challenges, implement solutions, and evaluate performance;
  • Documents and presents requirements, design alternatives, and findings to team members and clients;
  • Ability to develop strategic, baselined, data modeling processes; ability to accurately determine cause-and-effect relationships; and
  • Experience with integrated development environments, data integration, data visualization, data mining, and analysis tools.
  • Maintains and guides the development of common libraries and tools used by multiple teams.
  • Aids in formulating a strategy on how to achieve rapid prototyping

What you’ll need to succeed:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 7-10 years of data science experience, or a Masters Degree plus 5 years of data science experience.
  • Active Top Secret clearance with the ability to obtain a SCI
  • Experience with ML fields, e.g., natural language processing, computer vision, statistical learning theory
  • Hands-on experience with Natural Language Processing (NLP), Large Language Models, text embedding, semantic query, use of generative AI for text, and retrieval augmented generation (RAG)
  • Familiarity with data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model evaluation techniques essential for machine learning projects
  • Strong understanding of various machine learning algorithms, including supervised and unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning, and neural networks
  • Experience with version control systems like Git, enabling effective collaboration and code management
  • Experience in an ML engineer or data scientist role building ML models
  • Experience writing code in Python, R, Scala, Java, C++ with documentation for reproducibility
  • Experience using Apache Spark/Databricks distributed compute environments for AI/ML workloads
  • Experience handling petabyte size datasets, diving into data to discover hidden patterns, using data visualization tools, writing SQL, and working with GPUs to develop models
  • Experience with cloud-based data persistence products, especially RDS PostgreSQL and PostgreSQL extensions such as pgvector.
  • Experience writing and speaking about technical concepts to business, technical, and lay audiences and giving data-driven presentations

The Role: Staff Software Engineer

Working with our team of core trading systems developers to improve and expand the functionality of our matching engine, order entry mechanisms, and market data publication. We design, develop, deploy, and support real-time systems for our digital asset trading platform. Time is measured in microseconds and we aim to start measuring in nanoseconds. Reliability, fault tolerance, recoverability, throughput, and latency are what we look for in our systems. If something on the spaceship is broken we aim to fix it, if something can be automated we automate it, and we ship our code weekly.

Responsibilities:

  • Use engineering principles to identify and measure risk and to implement quantitative and technical risk management solutions in software.
  • Understand business needs, facilitate and develop process workflows, data requirements, and specifications required to support implementation of our real time exchange.
  • Develop scalable architecture for the future state of our exchange and contribute towards improving the trading infrastructure.
  • Write robust code and APIs to support the company’s vital business.
  • Keep everyone informed about the health and viability of the platform by reporting known issues and status of ongoing investigations.
  • Identify and advocate for changes vital to the stability and supportability of the system.
  • Mentor and advise teammates to ensure new features are efficient, highly available, and fault tolerant.
  • Provide continuity and stability to the production environment.
  • Provide quick response to production issues to help eliminate down time thereby ensuring high availability and performance of our trading platform.
