As a Staff Software Engineer, you will help develop and run the Total Visibility data pipeline that ingests, correlates, aggregates and outputs millions of events. You’ll be part of a small, focused, team getting things done.

The ideal candidate has a track record of architecting and building end-to-end software solutions, enjoys working in a collaborative and agile environment, and brings innovative solutions to complex problems with a desire to improve the status quo. Additionally, as an early member of our Dublin location, you will also have the opportunity to help build the team from the ground up and shape the office culture.

What you’ll do:

  • Architect, design, build and integrate our core ad analytics products end to end 
  • Lead the entire software lifecycle including hands-on development, code reviews, testing, deployment, and documentation, in addition to mentoring the team
  • Partner with the Product team and other stakeholders across the company to understand product requirements, gather business and technical requirements from broadcaster clients, and research and develop solutions, including API development
  • Manage multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced, exciting, collaborative environment

You should apply if you have most of this:

  • BS in Computer Science, or related STEM degree
  • 8+ years of hands-on programming experience usingPython, (preferred) Java, Scala 
  • 2+ years of experience working with big-data stack, including Spark and Kafka
  • Expert knowledge of Python and/or Java and (collections, multi-threading, JVM memory model, etc.) 
  • Experience with AWS tech stack, including but not limited to EMR, Athena, EKS, MSK
  • Experience partnering with Product and other high level stakeholders across the company to meet business deliverables
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Recent initiatives include building connected camera features so that customers can better monitor safety & compliance in vehicles, and improving geofence experience to offer insights about assets within a boundary.

We'll be there to support you as you become familiar with our teams, product domains, tech stack and processes — generally how we all work together.

 

As a Staff Software Engineer you will 

 

  • Help design, build and deliver the services and domains that power our platform — shaping the product features andcapabilities that underpin our platform.
  • Provide technical leadership – leading by example both within your team/domain and across our organization.
  • Exert your passion and thinking to shape the technical direction of our product and platform domains.  Using best of breed languages, frameworks and technologies.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers, Designers and Engineers to take ideas from concept to delivery.  Balancing the desire to ship code with the responsibility to get it right.

  • Familiarity with public cloud service platforms.
  • Experience partnering and collaborating with remote teams (across different time zones).

Some of the things that would be nice to have, but not required:

  • Familiar with containerisation and Kubernetes.

Rémunération

About The Team

The Location Cloud team develops and maintains the core backend services critical to delivering real-time location functionality to the Life360 app. Our distributed systems are optimized for durability, high availability, low latency, and internet-scale. The Location Cloud team is a part of our Location Operating Group, which focuses on all the location-based features the Life360 app offers our millions of users.

About the Job

As an SRE on the Location Engineering group you will help build and operate scalable services powering Life360 product. Our cloud team ensures that our API's are able to process hundreds of thousands of requests a second with the ability to scale 10x. You'll be a very active contributor to the design and operation of the core services. You use, develop, and improve automation tools as often as possible to increase the efficiency of the team and your work. You are comfortable dealing with very large amounts of traffic to the tune of billions of daily API requests.

The Canada-based salary range for this position is $170,000 to $210,000 CAD. We take into consideration an individual's background and experience in determining final salary- therefore, base pay offered may vary considerably depending on geographic location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The compensation package includes a wide range of medical, dental, vision, financial, and other benefits, as well as equity.

What You’ll Do

  • Engage with product and engineering teams to design, build and maintain the system / software for high availability and resiliency.
  • Manage SLOs / Error Budgets for service teams
  • Write software layers, scripts, deployment frameworks, tracers, monitors, self-healing/auto remediation tools to automate the processes.
  • Build and maintain software modules for use and reuse in cloud systems automation.
  • Build and maintain network border layer for applications (CDN / DNS / Load Balancing / etc)
  • Troubleshooting and root-cause analysis of issues regardless of tool, provider, platform, or language.
  • Participate in shared on-call rotation
  • Estimate schedules, breaking tasks down to reasonable 1-3 day tasks.

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent discipline with at least 5 years experience in operations and exposure to software engineering.
  • 7+ years of experience as an SRE
  • 3+ years as a Senior SRE with programming experience with one or more relevant languages: Java, Python, PHP, Scala, etc.  
  • Previous experience working remotely 
  • Experience with Infrastructure as code tools: Terraform, CloudFormation; config management/provisioning tools: Ansible, Chef, etc.
  • Proficient in multi-threaded design and implementation.
  • Troubleshooting and system engineering exposure in UNIX/Linux production environments.
  • Developing, running, and/or consuming cloud technologies such as AWS, Azure, Docker/Kubernetes, etc.
  • Experience with existing open source projects such as Consul, Kafka, Cassandra, Docker.
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply complex subjects and technologies.
  • Experience desired with Big Data, streaming technologies, SaaS based environments, Web Analytics
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Excellent English verbal and written communication skills. Highly collaborative working style.

About our Engineering Team:

We have around 300 engineers out of roughly 2,500 people in total - and we have big ambitions. There are many interesting challenges ahead, and we're happy for people to move between teams or to specialise, whatever you prefer. As an engineer here you'd be able to work directly with anyone across the company, and we run regular knowledge-sharing sessions so you’ll learn heaps about everything from how banks work to effective communication.

Your day-to-day   

This role is all about collaborating across disciplines to test hypotheses and make a difference to customers. As a product backend engineer you’ll work in a squad alongside product managers, marketers, user researchers, designers, mobile engineers, web engineers, data analysts, business analysts, writers and more! 

Together you’ll build and support a particular part of Monzo. Our product squads belong to our widercollectives(a word we use to describe self-governing business units of ~100 people). They are; Money, Borrowing, Fincrime, Customer Operations, Platform, Personal Banking & Business Banking. They’re all looking for additional Backend Engineers right now, we do a standard interview process across all our collectives and at the end we will find the best match for you based on your skills, experience, preferences and aligning with the business need! 

Our backend engineers have a variety of different backgrounds. As long as you enjoy learning new things, we’d love to talk to you. We do not ask for formal qualifications or degree requirements for any of our engineering roles.

You should apply if:

  • you have strong experience working on the backend of a technology product
  • you want to be involved in building a product that you (and the people you know) use every day
  • you have a product mindset: you care about customer outcomes and you want to make data-informed decisions
  • you’re comfortable working in a team that deals with ambiguity
  • you’re interested in distributed systems and writing resilient software
  • you have some experience with strongly-typed languages (Go, Java, C, Scala etc.).
  • you think you’d enjoy the kind of work we’re doing

The Interview Process:

Our interview process involves four main stages: 

  1. Recruiter Call 
  2. Initial Call 
  3. Take home task or pair coding exercise 
  4. Final interview including a system design and a behavioural interview
