THE ROLE

Khan Academy is looking for an experienced online safety professional to join our scrappy Community Support team. Our team is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for our learner community, and is deeply integrated into our product teams and processes across the organization. We work closely with product management, engineering, legal, design, marketing, quality assurance, and many others to make sure that the needs of our community are being met.  

The Community Support Lead: Trust & Safety position is a new role on our team that we’re very excited about. The initial area of responsibility for this role will be helping set safety policy and processes around feature development and content moderation for our new AI tutor, Khanmigo. This is a new and rapidly changing space and we want to make sure that the safety needs of our learners, teachers, and parents are being proactively considered across projects.

Additionally, this person will use their skills and experience to help lead community safety improvements more broadly. Khan Academy has a wonderful and supportive community across many channels and we want to make sure that they always feel safe learning and asking questions. Because of the age, diversity, and scope of our learner community and their interactions, this is a complex challenge that we need a seasoned safety leader to help us address.

You won’t be working directly in the support queue often, but as a leader on the support team you will help mentor and coach those who are, and help with relevant escalations. You’ll also eventually be embedded on one or more product teams to help drive safety and learner-related feature improvements. This is a rare opportunity for an experienced trust and safety leader to drive solutions to novel AI safety challenges, while at the same time having a real impact on global education access. 

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and improve our Khanmigo moderation processes. We have solid initial processes but want to set these up to scale to the complex needs of this feature. This will include creating policies and documentation, training and coaching for the moderation team, and ongoing audits and reporting.
  • Identify and advocate for tool and product needs around community safety across the organization.
  • Represent the user safety point of view in new feature development processes. This means understanding how safety needs cut across product areas and cohorts, and collaborating with relevant teams. This will include the product teams responsible for our district, teacher, parent, learner, and platform experiences.
  • Dive deep into our comment moderation tools (separate from Khanmigo) and put together processes for ensuring strong safety coverage of discussions, given current resources. Work with our community moderators to make sure we’re applying best practices around user safety.
  • Work closely with our legal and security teams and standardize the community support team’s policies around sensitive and higher-risk escalations.
  • Audit our customer support processes for potential social engineering vulnerabilities, and train the support team on how to avoid potential bad actors.
  • As a leader on the Community Support team, regularly help with teamwide customer support projects and needs outside of your main focus, including answering tickets, improving help articles, and other product support tasks.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years professional trust and safety experience, preferably in a leadership role. You keep updated on the latest industry best practices, and have handled a wide variety of problematic online behavior.
  • 1+ years experience working closely with product teams, directly influencing feature development.
  • Experience operating a content moderation program or team, ideally one that contained content from younger users.
  • Expertise with relevant laws and trends in the online trust and safety space, and ability to make high stakes decisions with consideration for compliance and legal requirements.
  • Ability to analyze and draw conclusions from both qualitative and quantitative sources.
  • Excellent written communication, which you can adapt for a variety of online audiences.
  • A history of successfully managing and executing projects of medium-to-large complexity. You’re able to balance a number of simultaneous goals and responsibilities within the timeline you’ve set for yourself.
  • Comfort working both autonomously and within defined structure. You’ll be joining a small team and your role will have many opportunities for you to leave your personal mark on it, but we are also a high-performing department with established processes around many topics.
  • Excited to build relationships with team members in other departments, and embrace a cross-functional mindset. 
  • You don’t take yourself too seriously and are excited to join a quirky, effective community support team.

Nice to have

  • Experience setting safety policies for communities that include children.
  • Familiarity with the user risks around AI, and good working knowledge around how LLMs and prompt engineering work.
  • Experience with managing trust and safety efforts across multiple languages and cultures.
  • Fraud detection and prevention experience.
  • Edtech, classroom, and/or teaching experience.
  • An appreciation for the complexity of managing online communities (beyond trust + safety) and all of their idiosyncrasies.
  • Professional experience in technical support, community management, or product management.
  • Strong fluency in memes, internet trends, gifs, and/or dad jokes.

THE ROLE

Currently we are focused on providing equitable solutions to historically under-resourced communities of learners and teachers, and guided by our Engineering Principles. On the Product team, you might work on projects such as:

  • Integrating state of the art learning science into our product to enable learners and teachers to quickly identify and address learning gaps on the fly.
  • Partnering with public school districts with a high percentage of Free and Reduced Price Lunch students to build and scale our teacher and learner tools to millions of learners who otherwise would not have discovered us.
  • Building tools for teachers to use Khan Academy as a strategic supplement in their classrooms.

With the recent launch of Khanmigo and Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a technology, this role will help harness the power of AI to deliver the product capabilities where applicable.

Currently, we build with Go, GraphQL, JavaScript, React & React Native, Redux and we adopt new technologies like LLMs when they’ll help us better achieve our goals. THE ROLE

We are looking for an experienced and driven Financial Systems Manager to join our growing Finance team. This role will be  critical to our remote friendly team to run efficiently, effectively, and proactively to keep pace with changing business needs. You’ll help us improve our financial reporting and processes through system improvements in our cloud based finance and accounting systems.

WHAT YOU'LL DO: 

  • Oversee ongoing maintenance of financial systems (Sage Intacct, Workday Adaptive, and applicable connected applications, Bill, Expensify) to ensure optimal performance and regular system updates.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve financial system issues promptly, minimizing impact on business operations; providing support to Finance and cross functional team members. 
  • Collaborate with other departments to gather requirements and ensure financial systems meet cross-functional needs.
  • Work with internal partners and stakeholders to create custom reports and dashboards in the systems based on the  detailed requirements. Understanding the needs of various stakeholders and translating those needs into clear and comprehensive system requirements and outputs.  
  • Train and support users with varying levels of system knowledge.
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation on system configurations, user procedures, systems access controls,  data flow, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Ensure strong internal controls and compliance with financial regulations, standards, system security, and data integrity with respect to  financial systems.
  • Manage financial system-related projects, including systems implementations, to ensure successful completion.
  • Assist with audit requirements.
  • As part of a small team, provide backup and support to finance and accounting team members as necessary.

WHAT YOU BRING:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in financial systems management, accounting/finance, or IT systems with a focus on financial applications
  • Understanding of cloud-based financial software architecture
  • Advance knowledge of Excel functions and strong ability to process large data sets
  • Experience with project management; ability to plan, execute, and monitor projects, ensuring timely completion within budget
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting standards

THE ROLE

The Associate Legal Counsel role will provide broad-based transaction and compliance support across Khan Academy’s functions. You will work with other members of our legal team on issues of diverse scope, and will have first-line responsibility for supporting business teams, consistent with your experience and our needs. 

  • Provide broad- based transaction support across Khan Academy’s functions.  
  • Review and negotiate contracts including NDAs, license agreements, and vendor agreements.
  • Provide support for our compliance programs, including review of product changes and assessment of third party services used in the product.
  • Support the maintenance and development of our privacy compliance program.
  • Research and track developments in regulatory areas relevant to our business, such as  privacy, security and emerging AI regulations.
  • Serve as a project manager or liaison for cross-functional projects and legal team initiatives.

  • This role is well-suited to a motivated self-starter that wants to broaden their skill set in a role that will continue to grow with the business.  

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Must have a JD from an accredited U.S. law school and be an active member in good standing of at least one state bar.
  • 2-5 years of legal practice experience.
  • You are a corporate generalist, preferably with some experience advising technology companies. 
  • You are curious, eager to learn and hone your skills in a fast-paced environment.  You are adaptable to change as the needs of our business evolve.
  • You have some experience with (or strong appetite for researching and developing expertise in) privacy, security, & data protection. 
  • Strong communication skills (written and oral).  You are able to explain legal concepts to non-lawyers in a concise, digestible format.
  • You take pride in your work product, with attention to organization, detail and consistency.
  • You take a practical approach to your work and look for efficient solutions to resolving issues and managing projects and processes.

  • Certification in privacy or data security (CIPP or similar) is a plus.

Our Sr. Legal Counsel - International Operations will play a key role in advancing our international reach:

WHAT YOU BRING

  • 8 or more years of legal practice experience, preferably including in-house experience at a technology company with international operations.

With a small team, we have managed to reach 21,000+ teachers and 1.2 million learners across various states. 

ABOUT THE ROLE

As part of our government programs, we support teachers and teacher mentors through training sessions, resources, webinars, and by enabling peer-to-peer sharing. The Schools Team is looking to bring an on-board Expert, Teacher Professional Development to design and deliver professional development initiatives for teachers, teacher mentors, and administrators as part of the team’s work with different government partners. 

This is a 12-months contract-based role. 

In this role, you would: 

  • Design and deliver synchronous and asynchronous modes of capacity-building initiatives for the partner programs 
  • Manage a team of master trainers in multiple languages and equip them to execute high-quality training for partners at a scale
  • Identify and document the best practices & challenges  emerging from the field and proactively prepare learning material to scale/address them 
  • Use data-informed decisions to continuously improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the training sessions conducted by the Khan Academy India team
  • Work closely with Sr. Lead, Teacher Professional Development  to strengthen the existing teacher professional development framework, aligned with the team’s overall goals

ABOUT YOU

You would be a great fit for the role if you have:  

  • 5+ years of experience including 3+ years working on designing & delivering  effective training programs for teachers and other education stakeholders,  ideally in a government setting
  • Fluency in English and Hindi (Read, write & speak)
  • Willingness to travel to different states to conduct training
  • Candidates with additional language proficiency in Odia or Marathi would be preferred.
  • Prior teaching experience (will be a plus)

  • A proven ability to work across teams with superior communication skills

THE ROLE

Under the general direction of the Head of Total Rewards,  the Compensation and Benefits Manager will be responsible for supporting the Khan Academy Total Rewards strategy by providing expertise and leadership in the day-to-day activities of the Total Rewards team, and be a key contact and contributor for Khan Academy’s US & Canada health and welfare plans, retirement programs (401k & RRSP), salary administration, and HR automation tools.

 

Role Responsibilities

 

  • Understand market conditions, compliance and best practices and apply to total rewards philosophy, strategic plans, and organizational initiatives to ensure compensation and benefit policies are aligned; partners with stakeholders to develop and implement creative and proactive solutions to remain competitive and compliant.
  • Serve as the initial point of contact with internal stakeholders and vendors for US and Canadian benefits and compensation questions.
  • Manage technology, tools, and systems to support compensation and benefit related activities, and serve as subject matter expert for HR total rewards tools; system integration experience is a bonus. 
  • Manage the development and maintenance of communication materials, handbook, and lead training related to comp and benefits programs as needed.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve the total rewards experience for employees.
  • Provide reporting, audit and analysis to support monitoring and inquiries into compensation and benefit actions.
  • Partner with all levels of employees, payroll, finance, vendors, legal counsel and government agencies. 

Benefits Management

  • Coordinate with benefit brokers, leaves administrators, and vendors to ensure quality and efficiency of delivery of benefit support.
  • Perform plan filings and audits to maintain plan qualification and governmental compliance.
  • Monitor usage, participation, utilization rates and trends on a regular basis. Identify problem areas in service delivery processes, troubleshoot issues and recommend solutions.
  • Assist in the annual benefits enrollment processes and new hire onboarding as necessary.

THE ROLE

Under the general direction of the Head of Total Rewards,  the Compensation and Benefits Manager will be responsible for supporting the Khan Academy Total Rewards strategy by providing expertise and leadership in the day-to-day activities of the Total Rewards team, and be a key contact and contributor for Khan Academy’s US & Canada health and welfare plans, retirement programs (401k & RRSP), salary administration, and HR automation tools.

 

Role Responsibilities

 

  • Understand market conditions, compliance and best practices and apply to total rewards philosophy, strategic plans, and organizational initiatives to ensure compensation and benefit policies are aligned; partners with stakeholders to develop and implement creative and proactive solutions to remain competitive and compliant.
  • Serve as the initial point of contact with internal stakeholders and vendors for US and Canadian benefits and compensation questions.
  • Manage technology, tools, and systems to support compensation and benefit related activities, and serve as subject matter expert for HR total rewards tools; system integration experience is a bonus. 
  • Manage the development and maintenance of communication materials, handbook, and lead training related to comp and benefits programs as needed.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve the total rewards experience for employees.
  • Provide reporting, audit and analysis to support monitoring and inquiries into compensation and benefit actions.
  • Partner with all levels of employees, payroll, finance, vendors, legal counsel and government agencies. 

Benefits Management

  • Coordinate with benefit brokers, leaves administrators, and vendors to ensure quality and efficiency of delivery of benefit support.
  • Perform plan filings and audits to maintain plan qualification and governmental compliance.
  • Monitor usage, participation, utilization rates and trends on a regular basis. Identify problem areas in service delivery processes, troubleshoot issues and recommend solutions.
  • Assist in the annual benefits enrollment processes and new hire onboarding as necessary.

The heart of this role is taking creative briefs and art direction and delivering visual design assets to support our Philanthropy, Marketing, Districts, Khan Academy Kids, and International teams. THE ROLE

Your work will enable answering critical and meaningful questions like "how do students learn most effectively?" and "how can we improve our content and product?".

The Sr. Analytics Engineer will strengthen our capabilities to enable the organization to use data to inform our decisions. You’ll have ownership of our enterprise data model and the core data pipelines that power our top line metrics and critical analyses. 

The Sr. Analytics Engineer is someone who enjoys tidying and documenting data and then delighting in the company’s well-organized EDW. You favor writing SQL to transform raw data into the data models to service your customers, the Analytics and Research teams, to empower them to generate actionable insights for stakeholders. You’ll work on projects that improve the quality and reliability of our existing data, and you’ll also enable entire new areas of the organization with new core data sources. And you adopt software engineering best practices to produce high quality data solutions.

What you’ll do:

  • Systematically build out our enterprise data model and warehouse:
    • Design, build, and productionize our ever-improving suite of core pipelines and data tables to enable standardized reporting and analysis.
    • Collaborate with engineers on the infrastructure team to improve our data technology stack (logging, instrumentation, ETL, security). You may also pitch in to help them bring new data into our warehouse.
    • Partner with analytics team members, the research team, and the broader product and business teams to design and standardize business rules and metric definitions. 
    • Implement EDW standards and robust monitoring/QA processes to ensure we continue to improve the quality and reliability of our data.
  • Empower every team with data:
    • Identify, pilot, and deploy whichever tools, datasets, and processes are best suited to increase access to and data use across Khan Academy to empower data-driven decision-making.
    • In addition to supporting members of the Data Insights Group, work with the product, content, philanthropy, marketing teams, and others to bring data to their fingertips, ideally with solutions that allow them to self-serve with our Looker implementation.
    • You will also build infrastructural data solutions to facilitate reporting to external partners and will ensure the highest standards of data accuracy, reliability, and security
  • Help instill a ‘data driven’/’data informed’ culture:
    • Shepherd our Metrics and Data Documentation wiki
    • Train team members on data skills and tooling

WHAT YOU BRING:

  • 6+ years experience in analytics engineering / data engineering or data warehousing; or in a business intelligence field with a strong emphasis on data modeling and pipeline work. Preference for experience in a consumer-facing internet business or edtech setting.
  • Advanced SQL skills (window functions, creating UDFs,  DML/DDL commands, etc.)
  • Proficiency in writing and maintaining data pipelines and data quality monitors in a workflow management tool for productionized solutions, with source control and code review.
  • Proficiency in computer science and software engineering fundamentals, including at least one scripting language (e.g., Python)
  • Experience across the entire data lifecycle: instrumentation, logging, data modeling, ETL, Business Intelligence, and visualization tools.

THE ROLE

  • Our US Content team includes the curriculum developers who design and develop the courses, lessons, videos, articles, and practice questions on Khan Academy. THE ROLE

Imagine being a teacher in Sarasota, Florida, four years after the pandemic started, with a classroom full of 6th graders who haven’t had a normal year of school or learning since 2019. We’re looking for an Accessibility Design Lead to embed within our Learning Components team, the home of some of our most resourced and empowered accessibility experts in the organization. The heart of this role is helping us achieve a truly accessible, AA-compliant product experience for users of all abilities, starting with the most fundamental technical components of our learning content.

You will also drive accessibility improvements to the platform UX across the product organization in partnership with our Accessibility Designer for Assessments. Ultimately, we want your help creating a living document that states our level of a11y compliance across the whole platform.

Some of the things you will work on:

  • Immediate accessibility improvements for our highest-priority learning components needed for Assessments.
  • Developing an accessibility roadmap to comply with state standards.
  • Bake accessibility into product design and development.
  • Educating the product org on accessibility best practices.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Design and deliver accessible, AA-compliant product improvements and new features, with an incredible attention to detail.
  • Drive high-impact accessibility initiatives and cross-team alignment in partnership with Design, Product, Engineering, Community Support, and Legal.
  • Communicate accessibility goals and priorities that are aligned to company objectives and generate buy-in across the product org.
  • Document and roll out a11y processes at scale, including for design systems, in collaboration with your Product, Design, and Engineering partners.
  • Actively participate in our Accessibility Guild, sharing knowledge and best practices.
  • Play an active role in how we create accessible experiences as a Design team, including participating in team critiques.
  • Act as a strategic thought partner/consultant across the organization on accessibility questions, as time and priorities allow.
  • Write about, present, and share what you have learned, both internally and with the wider Design community via our blog and industry events.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • 8+ years of experience as a product/UX designer.
  • 2+ years of experience in an accessibility design role.
  • Outstanding in interaction design, prototyping and information architecture, with visual design chops and close attention to all the details.
  • Expert-level understanding of WCAG 2.1 AA and how to apply it to web apps across mobile and desktop.
  • Proven record of successfully leading a11y efforts through all phases of development, with large-scale projects involving multiple cross-functional teams.
  • Experience creating documentation and deliverables for accessibility initiatives at scale (roadmaps, project plans, playbooks, communications).
  • Patience and the ability to balance sprints and marathons: you know how to simultaneously move quickly with a bias for action, and advance steadily towards long-term, org-wide change.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Comfortable in ambiguous situations and dynamic environments that run similar to a startup.
  • Eager to learn a lot about generative AI-driven products and how to make them accessible.
  • Prior experience with educational products or designing for content-forward experiences is a plus.

The target salary range for this position is $152,908 - $162,465 USD / $191,135 - $203,081 CAD. The pay range for this position is a general guideline only. The salary offered will depend on internal pay equity and the candidate’s relevant skills, experience, qualifications, and job market data. Exceptional performers in this role who make an outsized contribution can make well in excess of this range.  Additional incentives are provided as part of the complete total rewards package in addition to comprehensive medical and other benefits.
