What You’ll Do

  • Help design, build and improve our new inference and ML computation platform, acting as technical lead for one or more of our implementation teams.
  • Work with management, product and other internal business partners to drive technical decisions based on business and market needs
  • Work on the architecture of our distributed systems to ensure best-in-class reliability and efficiency, while helping to minimize operational costs and toil work
  • Provide your team empathetic leadership as well as mentorship to grow their own skills and abilities
  • Build products around a large range of ML models and types, including industry-leading research
  • Help build safety and fraud systems, around both inference and other ML systems
  • Handle interesting and dynamic scaling, hardware and scheduling challenges in a very dynamic and rapidly changing industry sector

You

  • Are an experienced lead software engineer with ten or more years of working on business-critical distributed systems.
  • Have a history of leading projects from inception to production, including making technical decisions, authoring design and decision documents, and advising on staffing needs.
  • Have significant experience architecting systems around relational databases, document databases, queue datastores, block storage, object storage, unreliable networks, and caches.
  • Have a deep understanding of the balance between initial build costs and operational costs, and what it takes to launch a product quickly but with a good technical foundation.
  • Can write both Go and Python to a high level, and can pick up other languages as needed.
  • Are very familiar with building integrated test frameworks and using CI/CD systems
  • Are product-oriented and focused on great user experiences, and are invested in building the best product possible for users.
  • Are good at working cross-functionally and solving problems across teams, including empathetic conflict resolution when working alongside teams with different priorities.
  • Have recent team leadership experience (on a team of four or more people) 

Nice to Have

  • Experience writing Kubernetes operators or other Kubernetes integrations
  • Experience running ML/GPU workloads in production
  • Experience with computation dispatch and orchestration systems

Salary Range Information 

Based on market data and other factors, the salary range for this position is $186,000 - $294,000. However, a salary higher or lower than this range may be appropriate for a candidate whose qualifications differ meaningfully from those listed in the job description.

Who You'll Work With

Arista Networks is looking for world-class Kubernetes-aware engineers passionate about driving systems reliability and scalability to provide the best possible development experience for our 1400+ person engineering team. You will be part of a fast paced, high caliber team building the internal systems and infrastructure used to build the routing and switching products driving the industry's largest data center networks.

Arista’s Software Engineering team runs at a scale rarely found - TBs of source control, 60GB work trees with 1000s of developer branches in flight at any given time, over 400K daily build/test jobs and over 150 homegrown and cloud native services running on a 100 node on-prem bare metal kubernetes cluster.  Operating these systems takes vigilance, responsiveness to alerts, and a steady stream of updates and bug fixes to keep things running smoothly and efficiently as well as to increase our ability to monitor, understand and visualize them. The role will cover all aspects of our Kubernetes infrastructure, and may include monitoring, responding to, and enhancing alerts, working to unify and standardize our alerts, fine tuning code for scalability and performance, debugging problems, simplifying and securing developer experience with k8s etc. You will own your projects from definition to deployment, developer and vendor interactions, and you will be responsible for the quality of everything you deliver.

What You'll Do

Working in the Engineering Productivity (EngProd) group, you will collaborate and work with other engineers to design, build, scale, and operate the systems that the rest of Arista’s development teams use.  The EngProd team uses industry-standard systems like Ansible, Jenkins, Kubernetes, Grafana, Spinnaker, MySQL, ElasticSearch, Google Cloud, and Varnish and also internal systems that we’ve built from the ground-up to automate CI/CD, testing, analysis, and visualization.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with existing k8s admin team to own different aspects of managing a production k8s cluster (eg: upgrades, monitoring, capacity planning, security, developer experience etc).
  • Proactively monitor, respond to, and enhance alerts and set up automated alert handling where applicable.
  • Create and maintain the incident response runbooks working with the service dev teams.
  • Debug and resolve issues impacting developer user experience and infrastructure stability around the k8s platform.
  • Adopt current best practices in k8s cluster management. Evaluate and adopt OSS projects that simplify k8s cluster management. 
  • Set up guidelines and paved paths for service dev teams improving developer experience around the k8s platform.
  • Work with Arista’s software engineers to identify bottlenecks and limitations in our workflows, tooling, and infrastructure around k8s and provide fixes for those problems.
  • Engage with 3rd party vendor support as part of triage.

Qualifications

  • At least BSc Computer Science or Engineering + 3 years’ experience, MS Computer Science or Engineering + 2 years’ experience, or Ph.D. in Computer Science or equivalent work experience.
  • Knowledge of one or more of Go, Python, Javascript. Experience with shell Scripting to be able to implement medium complexity automation workflows.
  • Knowledge of Linux (or UNIX).
  • Experience in operating software systems at scale.
  • Strong understanding of the fundamentals of storage and networking.
  • Comfortable with Ansible and GitOps.
  • Strong expertise with managing on-prem/baremetal Kubernetes clusters.
  • Applied understanding of software engineering principles.
  • Strong problem solving and software troubleshooting skills.

What you'll be doing:

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our growing community of six Embedded Software QA, Infrastructure, and Automation Engineers.

Engineers are embedded into different delivery teams, working on a variety of platforms and projects alongside QA, Embedded Software developers, and Production Systems Developers. The teams focus on a wide range of products and value streams, such as recording interfaces, MIDI controllers, and synthesisers.

You will be providing day to day management and coaching to support their development and meet the growing needs of the department. You will work closely with other Engineering Managers and Technical Leads to support inter team communication and planning, ensuring alignment on strategy and creating a sense of unity and direction.

Your team are responsible for the successful testing of our embedded software across the New Product Introduction (NPI) Programme. This ranges from working closely with developers, designing, and implementing test plans, as well as defining and maintaining our automated test platform. You will work closely with Lead QA Engineers on each project/programme and own the resource planning for your team that supports the product roadmap.

You will support and empower every member of your team to take ownership of their professional development, helping them to achieve their full potential.

As part of this role, you will report to the Head of Embedded Software and work closely with other Engineering Managers and Tech Leads across the department.

Key activities include:

  • Managing and coaching your team, via 1:1s and development reviews
  • Supporting and encouraging a strong Community of Practice for test and automation
  • Supporting project staffing and budgeting, including long-range resource planning, and hiring
  • Leading ongoing process improvement initiatives across the team
  • Enable engineering teams to make technical choices by facilitating the sharing of best practices and the exchange of ideas
  • Ensure we have the right skillset in the team, shaping our hiring strategy to attract and retain the best talent
  • Get involved with diversity projects to help build an inclusive culture
  • Follow the work of our agile dev teams and look for opportunities to adopt common practices and technologies
  • Ensure the team is equipped to achieve their goals, with effective onboarding, team knowledge management, training, and equipment
  • Introduce and monitor metrics to help with decision making

 An ideal candidate is likely to be:

  • From an embedded software testing background, with professional experience of working in agile development environments across multiple platforms (e.g., bare metal, RTOS, embedded Linux, FPGA)
  • Knowledgeable about automated end-to-end testing, TypeScript, JavaScript, and Python
  • An established leader with professional line management experience
  • A clear communicator and facilitator, with a proven track record of helping people and teams work well together.
  • An advocate for good documentation and the importance of knowledge sharing
  • Flexible and able to effectively prioritise and schedule across multiple projects
  • Methodical and rigorous, with a logical approach to problem solving
  • Passionate and knowledgeable about music and audio technology

  • Have Shell and Python scripting proficiency.
  • Strong ability to curate and adhere to technical standard operating procedures.
