Your impact

Handshake is hiring a Staff Product Designer. You will be a leader in the R&D organization. This role will require you to span from strategy to surface, bringing a talent for systems thinking, simple data-driven design, and seamless user experiences to support Handshake’s product. You will help our team shift to a strategic focus on building out a the best experience for our employers, so that they recruit and land the perfect candidates. You will also help execute on the vision of our new self-service product, and think through our pricing, packaging and tiering strategies. You will be able to lead on some of the biggest initiatives for the Handshake, to continue to push the needle on hiring talent.

Your role

  • Work from concept to delivery to inform product strategy and shape how Employers can create authentic connections with students

  • Lead with user empathy for employers, universities, and students

  • Partner with product, research, content, data science, and engineering to ensure projects are well-defined, high impact, and successfully executed

  • Develop and improve a shared product design language across all surfaces reflective of our brand

  • Up level the entire team through commitment to growth and mentorship

  • Drive up-leveling the product to be the top way college students get jobs

  • Establish design processes so we can scale efficiently and effectively

Your experience

  • Minimum of 7+ years of experience in product design

  • Experience designing web and native mobile products

  • Demonstrated experience leading design

  • Comprehension of human centered / user centered design methodology and techniques

  • Experience working with engineers and product managers to drive strategy, vision, and execution

  • A collaborative, no ego, approach to working with others

  • A portfolio of impeccably executed product design

Compensation range

  • $180,000-$205,000

For cash compensation, we set standard ranges for all U.S.-based roles based on function, level, and geographic location, benchmarked against similar stage growth companies. In order to be compliant with local legislation, as well as to provide greater transparency to candidates, we share salary ranges on all job postings regardless of desired hiring location. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including geographic location as well as candidate experience and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed above.

You should apply if you have most of this experience: 

  • 10+ years of experience in Product Design, UX, UI, or an HCI-related field, with experience working on web and mobile design at high-growth technology companies
  • Expertise in Figma with deep knowledge of utilizing design systems; extensive experience in program management tools such as Confluence and Jira
  • Experience creating and streamlining workflows for continuous iteration and improvement
  • Demonstrated ability to break down large concepts into manageable, iterative goals, with a proven track record of success in both initial development (0-1) and scaling (1-100) phases
  • Experience and passion for affecting culture change
  • Strong understanding of B2B environments, including the unique challenges and opportunities they present
  • Proven experience in building server-defined UIs
  • Bachelor's degree in design, human-computer interaction (HCI), or equivalent professional experience

About the opportunity

You will help us craft the future of our HRIS suite—the central place companies use to manage their workforce. You’ll drive innovation in the category and design new capabilities that save People teams countless hours and enable them to focus on effective people programs that lead to meaningful work and greater business outcomes.

You’ll design the system of record and tool kit for companies that is purpose-built for speed, deeper analytics, and tight connection to high-impact talent programs. You’ll have the opportunity to work with a talented group of designers, engineers, and PMs, alongside Marketing, Sales and Customer Success on problems that shape how our customers manage and develop their talent.

What you will do

  • You will design new products that extend our HRIS and make complicated, time-consuming workflows easier, quicker, and more automated.
  • You will develop deep domain expertise in People Operations, Payroll, and Benefits Administration
  • You will collaborate closely with product management, engineering, user research, data science, customer success, marketing, and sales to deeply understand customer needs and solve them through elegant design

What you will bring to the table

  • You bring over 8 years of experience designing consumer and/or SaaS products
  • You have a track record of leading the design of products both from inception to release and continuous iteration to successfully meet customer needs and business goals.
  • You bring experience designing complex workflows that move across or have an impact on multiple products within a suite.
  • You bring an excellent understanding and eye for visual design principles (as evident in your work), in particular about spacing, typography, hierarchy, and usage of color to communicate states and numeric values.
  • You have a track record of designing elegant solutions that effectively leverage or innovate on existing design patterns.
  • You bring experience developing strong partnerships outside of product and engineering to deeply understand customer problems. This includes partnering with User Research, Product Marketing, Customer Success, and Sales.
  • You bring a strategic mindset that is instrumental in shaping your team’s product strategy and roadmaps
  • You can make complex concepts accessible and develop compelling narratives that inspire people to action.
