The opportunity 

To achieve our ambitious goals, we’re looking for a Software Engineer to join our FinOps team as part of the wider Engineering Platform team. The person in this role will work directly with the biggest Grammarly vendors, identify and visualize cost drivers, discover cost optimization options, and forecast and analyze our cloud spending. They will drive our financial accountability culture and enable our Product, Engineering, IT, Finance, and Executive teams to scale Grammarly while making data-driven spending decisions.

Your impact

As a FinOps Engineer, you will be at the forefront of building and optimizing a framework that empowers our engineering teams to manage cloud costs effectively and provides stakeholders with the information to make value-driven decisions. You will create an abstraction over complex, flexible, and user-friendly infrastructure, balancing cost-efficiency with performance and security while making numerous critical decisions.

Your work will be instrumental in establishing a center of excellence for cost awareness, establishing and evangelizing best practices, and developing tools to scale these practices across all engineering teams.

In this role, you will:

  • Be an ambassador for FinOps - building and continually improving cost tooling and processes.
  • Fostering FinOps program and cost awareness: evolve tooling and processes to run the FinOps program, fostering cost awareness across Grammarly.
  • Create and drive cost saving backlog: Collaborate with developers to create a backlog of cost-saving initiatives and implement them effectively.
  • Implement cost monitoring and awareness tools: Deploy cost monitoring tools and practices organization-wide to increase awareness of cloud spending.
  • Provide guidance to engineering teams to have a cost-effective application/service by identifying anomalies and best practices.
  • Collaborate closely with executives to present financial reports, provide clear summaries, and address questions, ensuring insightful decision-making in a high-visibility role.
  • Implement cost forecasting improvements to reduce manual intervention for cost optimization workflows.
  • Implementing policy as code for cost optimization guardrails for prevention and auto-remediation.

Qualifications

  • Is experienced in building out FinOps tooling for cost anomaly detection, prevention and auto-remediation.
  • Has a minimum of 7 years of experience operating across live production SaaS environments with high load.
  • Experience in FinOps Framework: familiarity with FinOps principles and frameworks.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud-native infrastructure solutions and container orchestration platforms.
  • Background in software development or engineering roles with a focus on infrastructure and cost optimization.
  • Is knowledgeable on all things FinOps and how to scale those solutions across the engineering organization.
  • Is experienced in performance tuning and auto-scaling applications and infrastructure.
  • Is knowledgeable of AWS —or has deep expertise in Azure or GCP and is willing to learn AWS quickly.
  • Can deliver maintainable and high-quality code in Go or other languages.

  • Candidate should possess a high degree of technical competence in wastewater treatment systems along with exceptional communications skills (oral and written).  Additionally the candidate needs an intimate understanding of the buying influences and purchasing protocols in the light industrial market. 

  • Experience in sales of ion exchanger, microfiltration, reverse osmosis, clarifier, DAF, microscreens, evaporators, aerobic and/or anaerobic treatment systems to industrial users is a plus.

  • Experience in ingredient water, ultra pure water, boiler makeup water, cooling tower water and intake water treatment applications is a plus.

What you'll do:

  • Build and operate Tanium Cloud's Identity and Access Management (IAM) in Azure, AWS, and Kubernetes as infrastructure-as-code and policy-as-code using DevOps methodologies for multiple CCS owned cloud environments.
  • Design and implement our security strategy and controls with Security and Software Engineering teams for just-in-time and just-enough access for human and machine identities with Tanium Cloud services and cloud resources.

  • Proactively characterize unauthorized activity and malicious behaviors against our Tanium Cloud internal and external IAM services with Detection Engineers.

We're looking for someone with:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience 
    • Cloud Security, IT Security, or related technical field preferred 
  • Cloud IAM Security Engineering Experience
    • 5-7 years of experience in cloud security prevention, detection, response for public cloud systems (e.g. AWS, Azure) within a DevOps environment.
    • 5+ years of experience in building and operating cloud-based Identity and Access Management with AWS and Azure as code, including cloud organizations, account, identity, access secrets, role, and policy management for both humans and machines.
    • 3+ years of hands-on experience in securing identity and access controls for cloud-hosted Kubernetes clusters and their workloads (i.e. custom RBAC roles, workload identities, Open Policy, Operator Framework, Service Meshes, Hierarchical Namespaces ) with K8 service teams, preferably on AKS and EKS
    • Explicit hands-on experience using infrastructure-as-code (i.e. Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM) to manage cloud IAM service configurations, such as Azure Entra ID, Azure MyApps, Azure Policies, AWS Organizations, and AWS Organizations Service Control Policies (SCP).
    • Familiar with SAML2, OAuth2, and OIDC for Single Sign On (SSO) with federated identity access brokers (i.e. MyApps, Cognito, KeyCloak) for internal and external customer use.
    • Experience in detection engineering methodologies, such as building detection cases, proactively identify known and unknown cyber threats, advisory behaviors
    • Experience in using security query or analytic tools for security data analysis, such as SQL, KQL, or SPL, to enable SecDataOps
    • Build and improve IAM security playbooks and runbooks for automating security detection and response
    • Solid understanding of modern attacker tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) against cloud provider, Kubernetes, and open source IAM services (e.g. MITRE ATT&CK, building threat intelligence, etc.)
    • Prior experience implementing and tailoring identity, authentication, and authorization security controls from ISO 27001, SOC 2, or NIST SP 800-53 security control frameworks for confidential workloads.
  • Engineering Experience
    • Utilize robust analytical and problem-solving capabilities to confirm our hypotheses using precise data and in-depth root cause investigation.

    Overview

    Compensation

    The compensation range for the role is as follows:

    - Junior (0-3 years of experience): 1,500 - 3,000 USD Monthly
    - Mid (3-7 years of experience): 2,800 - 5,000 USD Monthly
    - Senior (8+ years of experience): 4,600 - 7,500 USD Monthly (Higher band reserved for Golang developers).

    Our ranges are very broad to accommodate all types of candidates and encourage growth. Specific compensation offered to a candidate may be dependent on factors such as education, experience, qualifications, and alignment with market data. Exceptional candidates may receive salaries outside of the posted ranges.
