We are seeking a Databricks Data Engineerto support our client, a community-based health system serving 1.3 million people across Ohio and Indiana, to design, build, and optimize data pipelines and workflows in support of our healthcare analytics initiatives.  This role will be integral in transforming raw data into actionable insights that support clinical, financial, and operational improvements. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data engineering with specific expertise in Databricks and cloud platforms.

The Details:

  • Location: Fully remote within U.S. (Eastern or Central Time preferred)
  • Duration: Approximately a 6-month consulting role through Blend360, with the possibility of extension

What you’ll do:

  • Data Pipeline Development: Design, build, and manage scalable data pipelines and ETL processes in Databricks, utilizing PySpark, SQL, and other tools to transform data into usable formats for analysis and reporting.
  • Data Integration: Integrate data from various clinical, financial, and operational systems, ensuring data quality, accuracy, and availability.
  • Data Lake and Warehouse Management: Develop and maintain the data lake and data warehouse environments, ensuring they align with best practices for storage, access, and scalability.
  • Data Quality and Governance: Collaborate with data governance and compliance teams to ensure data privacy, security, and accuracy, adhering to healthcare regulations such as HIPAA.
  • Collaboration and Support: Work closely with data scientists, analysts, and business stakeholders to understand data needs and develop solutions that meet clinical and business objectives.
  • Performance Optimization: Identify performance bottlenecks and optimize Databricks workflows for efficiency and cost-effectiveness, leveraging cluster management and Spark optimization techniques.
  • Documentation and Training: Create and maintain clear, comprehensive documentation for data processes and provide training or support to other data team members as needed.  Continuously provide training and mentorship to team members on Databricks best practices.

Qualifications

  • Strong experience in SQL, PySpark, CI/CD, CLI, Azure DevOps, Unity Catalog, various cluster settings, performance optimization, and end-to-end pipeline setup.
  • Experience with parsing and loading semi-structured data (JSON).
  • Experience with parsing and loading unstructured data (clinical notes, DICOM images - radiology reports, MRI scans, etc.).
  • Ability to set up streaming data in the Azure environment (Azure Event Hub).
  • Prior healthcare experience.
  • Databricks certification 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Medical Language Models from John Snow Labs.
  • Knowledge of healthcare NLPs and Spark NLPs.
  • Knowledge of HL7 Data format.

Job Summary

Duties/Responsibilities

  • IT Generalist duties include both administrative and technical support tasks throughout the workday. This includes handling local issues that the remote technical support staff could not resolve and troubleshooting specific systems errors and issues.
  • IT Generalists also train support staff in the use of business systems required for remote employment activity.

Responsibilities 

Application Design and Development 

  • Work closely with key stakeholders to scope user requirements and align technical solutions with KIPP's mission of improving student outcomes. 

  • Provide subject matter expertise in developing new features for existing applications and determining the appropriate platforms for new initiatives. 

  • Propose a comprehensive architecture to solve business requirements, ensuring alignment with KIPP’s overall technology strategy and framework. 

  • Design and develop information architecture and navigation layouts, prioritizing usability and user adoption to enhance the user experience. 

  • Customize and enhance applications across multiple technology platforms to meet KIPP's operational needs.

DevOps and Deployment

  • Manage and automate the release process, implementing practices to minimize downtime and reduce risk during deployments.

  • Work with the operations team to maintain servers and manage infrastructure scaling and optimization. 

Application Support and Infrastructure 

  • Serve as Tier II support for unresolved application issues, working closely with the Helpdesk Technician to provide timely and efficient solutions. 

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to other IT team members, fostering a collaborative and learning-focused environment. 

  • Collaborate with the IT Operations team to ensure that applications are patched, upgraded, and fully operational during scheduled maintenance windows. 

  • Develop processes, in collaboration with the IT Operations team, to ensure data security, high availability, and effective disaster recovery strategies. 

Documentation 

  • Provide written design documents and regularly update documentation with as-built information for accuracy and continuity.

  • Monitor network operations dashboards and respond to alerts and failures to troubleshoot networks to identify and resolve issues quickly.
  • Partner with project and program managers to meet overall timelines and resolution of issues.

  • Take a lead role in the engagement and mitigation of outage-causing events or issues.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role you have:

  • The candidate should have a solid foundation in networking including routing, switching, security and load balancing. 
  • 4+ years of experience with cloud computing technologies (e.g. Azure, AWS, Google Cloud Platform, etc.) across Windows and/or Linux
  • Azure Core Platform: Compute, Storage, Networking.
  • Azure Web Apps: developing, deploying, debugging and supporting web applications using .NET, Java, PHP, Python, Node.js etc. on Windows or Linux.
  • Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD): using DevOps, Bit Bucket, GitHub.
  • Experience in one or more automation languages (PowerShell, shell scripts, Perl, Python, Ansible, Terraform) desired.

For positions in California (outside of the Bay Area), we offer a base pay of $109,400 - $185,900, plus equity (when applicable), variable/incentive compensation and benefits.
