Frontend Apps Developer

DeskproUnited Kingdom, Remote
JestredisuidockertypescriptjavascriptfrontendPHP

Deskpro is hiring a Remote Frontend Apps Developer

As a frontend developer, you will help build new features and functionality to existing projects as well as work on greenfield projects. You'll contribute in the full software development lifecycle including refinement, development, testing and deployment.

You'll be joining a small team where your specific experience will have great impact. Most apps are opensource and you will have a lot of autonomy over your own work.

Deskpro is a small company, and that means you will sometimes be expected to dip in and out of various roles as needs arise. You will learn a lot through the varied work, and you will get satisfaction in shipping software that gets used by thousands.

What are apps?

"Apps" are self-contained mini Javascript applications that live inside of the main Deskpro application. Just like your browser has browser extensions, Deskpro has "apps". We build and provide an SDK that developers (including ourselves) use to build these apps, similar to how a browser provides.

Your job as an apps developer will be to help build new apps to add to our catalogue, as well as to maintain and improve the overall SDK and platform that the apps themselves run on.

Technology we use and where we're going

Most of our apps are open source, built with React and Typescript, and use eslint and jest for code quality and testing.

If you're also interested in the backends, here's some other tech we use: PHP, NodeJS, Docker, Elastic, Redis, and all the services offered by AWS.

We're big fans of using the right tool for the job!

Why should you be interested?

  • You'll get to use and learn about many different products, APIs and technologies. Deskpro is the central hub for a lot of companies, and we like integrating with them.
  • You'll get to work with real customers and get a peek into how other businesses operate their businesses.
  • You'll get to try out new technology. We are constantly updating our stack and are always on the lookout for tools that will help us be more productive.

Examples of projects we've been working on lately

  • Apps - We maintain 60+ integrations (not all are public), and we’re looking to create more as well as improve the existing
  • App-SDK - Developers outside of Deskpro also make apps and we want to make it as easy as possible for them to build their own app
  • Deskpro UI - A shared UI library used internally by Deskpro but also externally to give a consistent and excellent user experience
  • Solid experience building high quality web apps with React and Typescript (with unit tests, Internationalisation, optimisation).
  • Experience with JavaScript/Typescript and the JavaScript/Typescript ecosystem. For example, you know how to bootstrap a new product or library (our app template uses Vite).
  • You should be a fast learner. We often venture into unknown territory so you should be a Google/ChatGPT-fu master and have experience-driven intuition.
  • You should have a strong understanding of software architecture with opinions on "the right way" to do things.
  • You’ll have a good understanding of GraphQL and Rest APIs - we work with lots of 3rd parties which has a variety of API standards.
  • You should be a "do-er". You will have a lot of autonomy over your own work, and you will be expected to work with the team to make sure your projects get shipped.
  • You work well with others and enjoy sharing your knowledge and leading by example.
  • You should love the colour green. We're putting a big focus on delivering well-tested and super solid software!
  • Competitive Salary
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Employee equity scheme.
  • Varied work. Both in terms of what product features you will be working on, but you'll also have the opportunity to immerse yourself in other aspects of the company such as product planning, customer support, etc.
  • A mixture of autonomy over your own work and real responsibilities to the team and business.
  • Your choice of equipment (most of our devs like Macbook's with two 4k monitors but a Framework laptop with Windows or Linux is always available).
  • We encourage self-improvement: Company-sponsored server/hosting for your side projects; books; conferences; courses. Just ask!.
  • 2 minute walk from shops, restaurants, pubs and gyms.
  • Lovely new offices, BBQs in the summer, Monday team breakfasts and Friday lunches. Unlimited coffee, tea, soft drinks and snacks with beers for Friday afternoon.
  • BUPA Private Healthcare & Cash Scheme, Pension Scheme, Bike Storage, Season ticket loans, Reduced gym membership.

Principal Cloud Engineer EMEA

Human MadeEdinburgh,Scotland,United Kingdom, Remote
terraformwordpressdockerlinuxAWSPHP

Human Made is hiring a Remote Principal Cloud Engineer EMEA

Human Made is looking for a Principal Cloud Engineer. This position is remote but you should be based between UTC and UTC+5:30.

As a Principal Cloud Engineer at Human Made, you will work to build and operate the cloud hosting platform underpinning Altis Cloud, which serves tens of billions of page requests every year. You’ll work alongside the rest of the Product team, building and operating the platform with other Product and Cloud Engineers. You will be required to support both client and developer requests relating to cloud infrastructure for projects and environments.

The Altis Cloud platform is a containerised LEMP platform running on Amazon Web Services. The Altis software is based on WordPress, so you should understand the operational concerns regarding PHP-based applications. This includes familiarity with scaling considerations, security best practices, caching, and performance considerations. Knowledge of WordPress best practices relating to performance and security is an advantage, as this will allow you to contribute to code review and cross-functional architectural decisions, however this knowledge can be gained through experience on the job.

Human Made uses Terraform to manage infrastructure as code, in addition to legacy usage of CloudFormation; you should have experience with and understanding of these tools. You should have a good knowledge of AWS and scaling LEMP-based systems. Some experience or understanding of containerised platforms (such as Docker and ECS) and Linux system administration is an advantage, however this knowledge can be gained through experience on the job.

As a Principal Cloud Engineer, you will be on-call during (UK) working hours for any site availability issues that arise. Our globally-distributed nature means out-of-hours support is rare, but may sometimes be required. You should be a good, professional communicator when providing client support in the event of site outages or other issues affecting availability or maintenance. You’ll be responsible for either directly solving or coordinating support issues while you are on-call.

Human Made is a remote company which means that you need to be able to work both independently and as part of a remote team. Good communication skills are essential to be successful in the job. You should be able to prioritise your work and meet any deadlines, communicating any problems upstream along the way.

You should be prepared to learn new technologies, frameworks or software when required. These could be outside of your engineering comfort zone. You are expected to have a can-do attitude when tackling new technical challenges, working with team-wide decisions that may not be your own and dealing with client relationship frustrations.

  • Experience with Amazon Web Services, particularly services relating to high-availability web infrastructure. For example, EC2, RDS, ElastiCache, ALB, S3, Lambda, VPC, CloudFront, Security Groups, IAM, ASG, and ECS
  • Comfortable working from a Linux command-line
  • Good at problem-solving and troubleshooting
  • Comfortable with version control systems and corresponding workflows
  • Experience with orchestration tools and contributing to existing infrastructure-as-code, especially Terraform and CloudFormation
  • Ability to automate tasks
  • Experience with running WordPress (or comparable LEMP-based applications) at scale
  • £65,000 - £75,000 (dependent on seniority and location)
  • Flexible working
  • up to 26 weeks paid parental leave (dependent on tenure)
  • 35 day holiday policy
  • Sickness and carers leave
  • Regular company retreat
  • Conference and training budget
  • Monthly remote working allowance
  • Work wherever you want
  • New mobile phone every two years
  • New computer when you need it
  • Office equipment when you need it

LawnStarter is hiring a Remote Lead Web Developer

LawnStarter is a marketplace that makes outdoor home services easy for homeowners while helping small businesses succeed. We've raised $25 million in venture funding and are growing fast. Are you a driven software engineer interested in helping give millions of Americans the freedom to spend time on what truly matters?

Working at LawnStarter offers you a chance to help solve the most important challenges in the home services space in an environment that’s fun, collaborative, and innovative. We are looking for smart, creative individuals who are passionate about innovation and aren't afraid to show it.

    Title: Lead Software Engineer

    What you’ll do:

As a Lead Software Engineering at LawnStarter, you’ll report to one of our Engineering Managers and be responsible for leading technical initiatives from inception to the hands of our users. You will be empowered to drive continuous improvement and constantly evaluate the return on investment on every decision we make when building our products.

You’ll be in a hands-on development and technical lead role collaborating with our cross functional teams to help continue building the leading LawnStarter platform. Your focus will be architecting solutions, writing quality code, leading other engineers by example and solving technical challenges that will continue improving the experience of our users. You will become a key contributor to the codebase willing to work in any area of the code when needed. This can include JavaScript, PHP, Terraform or other backend/operations languages or technologies.

Our ability to deliver quality software to our customers in a timely, predictable manner will be directly attributable to your capacity to identify and address challenges faced by the initiatives you will be leading.

    You’ll also:

    • Lead the development of LawnStarter platform ensuring that we’re utilizing the best development techniques, architectural patterns, frameworks and libraries for those initiatives
    • Own and ensure the resolution of complex problems found in our systems and integrations
    • Find opportunities to broadcast knowledge and lessons learned across delivery teams
    • Delegate to teammates and work with them to ensure they're successful

    • Communicate patterns and solutions through both thorough written documentation and technical presentations

    What we’re looking for:

We’re looking for you if you’re an experienced, full-stack engineer. More specifically, we’re looking for:

    • Someone with a fair amount of experience working on both server- and client-side web software. You should have familiarity with cloud development, why Test Driven Development (TDD) is critical while writing code, what makes an API RESTFul, what React is, what an XSS attack is, and how an MVC web framework works. That will probably mean you’ve been doing this stuff for a few years.
    • Someone who understands fundamental computer science concepts. That doesn’t necessarily mean you have a CS degree. But you should be able to describe how a pointer works, what Big O notation is and how to use it, when to use composition and when to use inheritance and the differences between an array and a linked list and a set.
    • Someone with a firm grasp of SQL and databases in general (including non-relational databases). You should know how to do CRUD operations, what indexes are and why they matter, and the difference between a left join and an inner join for instance.

All team members at LawnStater are expected to embody our core values which are: Be data-driven, Get shit done, People are critical, Challenge the status quo, Be scrappy, Build a great environment.
