Machine Learning Engineer, Payment Platform

SquareSeattle, WA, USA, Remote

Square is hiring a Remote Machine Learning Engineer, Payment Platform

Company Description

Since we first opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely – and so has Square. After enabling anyone to make a payment and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together. So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, run a busy kitchen, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. And across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow all in one place.
Today, we’re a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex commerce operations, sellers just starting out, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers scale, so do our solutions. We all grow together.
There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a business that is big, meaningful, and lasting. And we are helping sellers around the world do the same.

Job Description

The Payment Platform is an open, global financial services platform for developers who serve sellers. It provides the necessary components to manage identity, process payments across multiple channels, hold and transfer funds, and provide accounting, reconciliation, and reporting in a secure and compliant way.

We process billions of dollars worth of transactions every year. At that scale, even small optimizations can lead to a major impact. As a Machine Learning Engineer on Payment Platform, you will partner with software engineers, product managers, and data scientists to seamlessly integrate machine learning into our payment processing.  Current work includes building models to optimize pricing, improve payment routing, reduce decline rates, and predict transaction costs.

Our algorithms derive value from our unique and rich data. We partner with business, product, and engineering teams to drive optimal decision-making using sophisticated modeling and machine learning techniques. We’re a passionate team of scientists and engineers who are shipping machine learning models that make payments efficient, effective, and low-cost for Square.

You will:

  • Train, test, and deploy machine learning models with high business impact in collaboration with machine learning engineers, and software engineers, and product managers

  • Research and implement state-of-the-art ML tooling and infrastructure to scale our rapidly growing model suite

  • Understand the needs of stakeholder teams, frame and structure questions, collect and analyze data, prototype, and build production-ready machine learning pipelines

  • Uncover new opportunities for using machine learning to improve payments by performing independent research and building relationships with partner teams

Qualifications

You have:

  • 3+ years of industry experience in a machine-learning-focused role

  • Experience in exploring and implementing state-of-the-art ML tooling and technologies

  • Experience in applying machine learning techniques to solve practical product problems with clear business impact

  • A strong grasp of computer science fundamentals

  • Proven ability to lead impactful cross-functional projects that depend on the contributions of others in a variety of disciplines

Technologies we use and teach:

  • Python (numpy, pandas, sklearn)

  • Machine Learning (e.g. regression, ensemble methods, neural networks, etc.)

  • Statistics (Bayesian methods, experimental design, causal inference)

  • Google Cloud Platform: BigQuery, Dataflow, and Composer

  • SQL

  • Airflow

  • Looker

  • Snowflake

Job Description

Do you want to build something completely new from the ground up? Are you ready to take part in defining a direction for a completely new initiative and face a challenge to build a new real-time solution for 10M+ users?

If you said “Yes, yes and definitely yes”, then come and join our new team on a mission to build a completely new instant messaging platform for our support.

World-class customer service is one of the cornerstones of Wolt ????  The quality of communication between our team and our customers and partners is essential as it determines how fast and accurately we can respond to inquiries and solve emerging problems. At Wolt, we currently serve over 10M+ monthly users and they love to chat with us, a lot.

You will be one of the first joiners in a shiny new team with a remarkable opportunity to improve our already world-class support experience. Since it is early days in the project, you will play an integral part in defining the way the team will work, participate in architecture and ideation discussions and decide on tools and best practices. You’ll collaborate closely with the designer, product manager and other engineers in your team.

We’re obsessed with high ownership teams at Wolt, which means you’ll get to work in a culture of freedom and accountability. Our teams are in charge of their own roadmaps, how they build services and products, and how they solve challenges from new features to core scalability of their solutions.

You can be based in our tech hubs Helsinki or Berlin or work entirely remotely elsewhere in Finland, Germany, Denmark, or Estonia now and in the future! ????  Read more about our new remote set-up here.

Qualifications

Building a brand new support chat tool is an exciting and challenging problem. We are looking for someone eager to create a scalable, highly available real-time messaging service for our 10M+ users. Challenges include real-time messaging, ensuring that messages are reliably stored and delivered, designing and building a conversations inbox with prioritization, attachment, and push notification systems. That’s just to start with.

The potential tech stack that we are considering is MongoDB for storing general metadata and messages archive (in the future potentially distributed KKV database for storing archive data), Node.js + Fastify (optional) for iterating quickly and building a REST API and other services, also piloting Elixir + Phoenix for building a scalable real-time messaging system.

Experience with high traffic and high-performance projects and good knowledge of NoSQL databases like MongoDB, Cassandra, Riak, or similar would be highly valuable. Great if you consider yourself flexible enough to work with different languages and technologies depending on the problem we face, but in the beginning, at least strong Node.js skills would be valuable for this role.

It is also a bonus if you have experience working with real-time projects like chats, multiplayer games, signaling servers for voice/video communications, or breaking news providers so you can demonstrate how to build reliable clients and backends to serve our customers needs.

We value an attitude of constant improvements and also the ability to create new things from scratch. An entrepreneurial mindset of taking ownership of what you've built is a must.

Join the team with a huge opportunity to make an impact!

Additional Information

The positions will be filled as soon as we find the right persons, so make sure to apply as soon as you realize you really, really want to join us!

The compensation will be a negotiable combination of monthly pay and Wolt stock options. The latter make it exceptionally easy to be excited about our company growing and doing well, as you will own a piece of the pie.

If you want to check up on your application or have any further questions about the position you can turn to Talent Acquisition Partner, Anna Janeta ([email protected]) at any given time.

The Role

We are recruiting a Senior Platform Engineer to be a founder member of a new Platform Team, building the internal systems and services our product development teams need to continue evolving UnmadeOS as we scale the company in 2022 and beyond. You will be working alongside one of our existing Backend Engineers and a new Product Manager.

You will definitely have the opportunity to build new tools and help them acquire skills to do this, but you won’t be in a gatekeeper role.

Our services are built on AWS Lambdas and Django applications running in Docker containers on ECS. Our front-end systems use React, Typescript, SVGs and WebGL, with our assets served from S3 via CloudFront. Our infrastructure roadmap includes migrating our containers to Fargate and introducing asynchronous communication between our services.

If your first 12 months you will be:

    • Helping shape the remit and working practices of the Platform team.
    • Selecting and implementing an Identity Management System for UnmadeOS, helping our product development teams integrate with it, building any libraries our teams need for integration and migrating our existing user identities.
    • Implementing centralised tooling for monitoring our technical systems.
    • Investigating tools for business-facing data analytics.
    • Working with engineers in other teams to identify services we can provision and tools we can build to support their work in product development and system architecture.
    • Working with other engineers in your team to build a broad skill set in infrastructure and platform management.
Customising a New Balance trainer through the online editor

In order to be successful in this role you will need:

    • Experience working with a broad suite of AWS services.
    • Motivation to help other engineers solve problems, sometimes by building tools, sometimes by sharing knowledge and enabling them to find their own solutions.
    • Pragmatism, making decisions that work best for the business.
    • Experience mentoring more junior engineers.
