Job Description

The Data Intelligence Tribe is responsible for leveraging Shippeo’s data from our large shipper and carrier base, to build data products that help our users (shippers and carriers alike) and ML models to provide predictive insights. This tribe’s typical responsibilities are to:

  • get accurately alerted in advance of any potential delays on their multimodal flows or anomalies so that they can proactively anticipate any resulting disruptions

  • extract the data they need, get direct access to it or analyze it directly on the platform to gain actionable insights that can help them increase their operational performance and the quality and compliance of their tracking

  • provide best-in-class data quality by implementing advanced cleansing & enhancement rules

As a Data Engineer at Shippeo, your objective is to ensure that data is available and exploitable by our Data Scientists and Analysts on our different data platforms. You will contribute to the construction and maintenance of Shippeo’s modern data stack that’s composed of different technology blocks:

  • Data Acquisition (Kafka, KafkaConnect, RabbitMQ),

  • Batch data transformation (Airflow, DBT),

  • Cloud Data Warehousing (Snowflake, BigQuery),

  • Stream/event data processing (Python, docker, Kubernetes) and all the underlying infrastructure that support these use cases.

 

Qualifications

Required:

  • You have a degree (MSc or equivalent) in Computer Science.

  • 3+ years of experience as a Data Engineer.

  • Experience building, maintaining, testing and optimizing data pipelines and architectures

  • Programming skills in Python 

  • Advanced working knowledge of SQL, experience working with relational databases and familiarity with a variety of databases.

  • Working knowledge of message queuing and stream processing.

  • Advanced knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes.

  • Advanced knowledge of a cloud platform (preferably GCP).

  • Advanced knowledge of a cloud based data warehouse solution (preferably Snowflake).

  • Experience with Infrastructure as code (Terraform/Terragrunt)

  • Experience building and evolving CI/CD pipelines (Github Actions).

Desired: 

  • Experience with Kafka and KafkaConnect (Debezium).

  • Monitoring and alerting on Grafana / Prometheus.

  • Experience working on Apache Nifi.

  • Experience working with workflow management systems such as Airflow.

Description

As a Product Success Engineer at Cobalt, you will shape and scale our support processes, documentation, tools and workflows. Part of your time will be dedicated to directly supporting our customers and staff by triaging inquiries from various channels, providing Level 1 support (via chat, email, or video calls) for common inquiries or facilitating and tracking escalation flows. The rest you’ll focus on enhancing our support efficiency and effectiveness by continually improving self-service channels, such as our customer-facing and internal product documentation, tuning AI/LLM systems to provide quality and reliable guidance, and collaborating with business and product teams on platform or operational improvements to address common support issues. 

Our ideal candidate is passionate about customer support, excels in problem-solving, and brings a proactive mindset, always seeking ways to optimize or automate processes to get customers the answers they need faster while enabling our teams to focus on new and bigger challenges. 

This role will work remotely, but must be located in the US Eastern timezone, available from 8am to 5pm ET. 

What You'll Do

  • Support Excellence: Triage customer and internal support inquiries, directly providing Level 1 support or escalating to appropriate teams, and tracking cases to ensure quick and effective resolution. Common issues you’ll support with may include:
  1. Consulting customers on how to best utilize, customize and implement Cobalt’s integration and API solutions
  2. Helping users optimize their configuration of our automated security tools to maximize coverage and efficacy for their applications
  3. Assisting customers with connecting their identify management systems, configuring access controls, or troubleshooting login issues 
  4. Facilitating operational workflows and coordinating internal approvals 
  • Support Process & Tooling: Design, operationalize, and maintain scalable support processes and tooling for case management, escalations, tracking and reporting.  
  • Knowledge Management: Maintain our product documentation, ensuring our documentation follows best practices, and continually updating content with troubleshooting guides and self-service materials that enable customers and staff to get answers when they need them and limiting support touchpoints. 
  • In-App Help Desk: Collaborate closely with Software Engineers to integrate a help desk solution, including an AI-driven chat support bot, into our platform and data reporting systems.  
  • Change Management:  Partner with the Product team to prepare announcements, documentation, FAQs and release notes for new product launches, and continually update internal materials to enable sales and customer success teams to effectively support the product. 
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with various teams to understand support needs, and share insights and solutions to common customer/internal challenges to inform product improvements and innovation.
  • Inform Product Improvements:  Consolidate insights and feedback on customer pain points to help inform product improvements and roadmap. 

You Have

  • Proven Expertise: Minimum of 3 years of technical product support experience. 
  • Technical Writing: Expertise with technical writing, able to communicate complex and technical concepts in simple ways, in the form of product documentation, in-app content, how-to guides, diagrams, playbooks and other supporting materials. 
  • Ticketing Tools:  Proficiency with configuring, integrating and operating support and development ticketing systems such as Jira, Github, and Zendesk.
  • Problem Solving: Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data and derive actionable insights.
  • Stakeholder Management:Excellent verbal and written communication skills, enabling effective collaboration in a remote setting, and the ability to build relationships across functions.
  • Entrepreneurial Mindset: Eagerness to learn new technologies and approaches, with a proactive mindset and willingness to contribute ideas.

Nice to have

  • DevSecOps Proficiency:  Fluency with development, security and reporting tools, such as Google BigQuery, Looker Studio, ServiceNow, Github, PowerBI, etc. 
  • Workflow Automation: Experience with low-code/no-code automation tools, such as Workato and Zapier.

This role will receive a competitive salary, benefits, and equity. What you’ll do:

About the Role:

Gusto’s Data Science team leverages Gusto’s rich dataset to guide product direction and decision-making. We operate full-stack, conducting analyses, prototyping and deploying predictive models and statistical tools both for internal use and for our customers. 

For this role, we are looking for a technical leader (an individual contributor) to drive machine learning and AI in the payment and risk domains.  You will build a model-driven risk platform to provide a trusted environment for Gusto Ecosystem. 

You’ll be working with an established team and seasoned payments and risk leaders in Engineering, Product, Design, Operation, Identity and Compliance. In this role, you’ll work cross functionally to build Platforms that span the entire breadth of the Payments and Risk Stacks, and use ML and AI to build a world- class, high secure platform that safeguards our users’ activities and money, and ensures unparalleled reliability. 

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Build and deploy machine learning models to identify, assess and mitigate risks 
  • Responsible for driving research in the problem space, working with stakeholders to understand model requirements, developing the model from scratch, deploying the model alongside your engineering counterparts, and monitoring and maintaining the model’s performance over time
  • Partner with Engineering, Design, and Product counterparts in Payment and Risk to solve complex cross functional problems
  • Develop scalable frameworks and libraries that enhance and contribute to the team’s core analysis and modeling capabilities
  • Identify new opportunities to leverage data to improve Gusto’s products and help risk management team to understand business requirements  and develop tailored solutions 
  • Present and communicate results to stakeholders across the company

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 8+ years experience conducting statistical analyses on large datasets and deep domain knowledge in machine learning. 
    • This could mean either a MS or PhD in a quantitative field with at least 5 years experience in a business environment, or BS or Data Science Bootcamp graduate with at least 8 years of experience working as a data scientist or a machine learning engineer in a business setting.
  • Experience applying a variety of statistical and modeling techniques using Python, R or another statistical modeling language, as indicated by familiarity with many of the following techniques - predictive modeling, anomaly detection, ensemble methods, natural language processing (NLP, optional).
  • Strong programming skills - comfortable with all phases of the data science development process, from initial analysis and model development all the way through to deployment
  • Excellent communication skills - able to effectively deliver findings and recommendations to non-technical stakeholders in a clear and compelling fashion
  • PhD or Masters plus equivalent experience in a quantitative field is a plus
  • Experience in the Fintech industry or risk management domain is a plus

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $195,000-$241,000/year in New York and $177,00- $219,000/year CAD in Toronto. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.


Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 daysper week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

Overview of the Data Engineering team: 

At Zego the Data Engineering team is integral to our data platform, working closely with Software Engineers, Data Scientists and Data Analysts along with other areas of the business. We use a variety of internal and external tooling to maintain our data repositories. We are looking for people who have a solid understanding of ETL and ELT paradigms, are comfortable using Python and SQL, hold an appreciation for good software engineering and data infrastructure principles, are eager to work with complex and fast growing datasets, reflect a strong desire to learn and are able to communicate well.

Our stack involves but is not limited to Airflow, Data Build Tool (DBT), a multitude of AWS services, Stitch and CICD pipelines. As a Data Engineer you will have the opportunity to promote emerging technologies where they can add value to the business and promote better ways of working.

Over the next 12 months you will:

  • Assist in developing and maintaining our ETL and ELT pipelines.
  • Support our data scientists in the development and implementation of our ML pricing models and experiments.
  • Help drive and evolve the architecture of our data ecosystem.
  • Collaborate with product managers and across teams to bring new products and features to the market.
  • Help drive data as a product, by growing our data platform with a focus on strong data modelling, quality, usage and efficiency.
  • Build tailored data replication pipelines as our backend application is broken into microservices.

About you

We are looking for somebody with a working knowledge of building data pipelines and the underlying infrastructure. Experience in data warehouse design undertakings, following best practices during implementation is a big plus. You have worked with (or are keen to do so) Data Analysts, Data Scientists and Software Engineers.

Practical knowledge of (or strong desire to learn) the following or similar technologies:

  • Python
  • Airflow
  • Databases (PostgreSQL)
  • Data Warehousing (Redshift / Snowflake)
  • SQL (We use DBT for modelling data in the warehouse)
  • Data Architecture including Dimensional Modelling
  • Experience in using infrastructure as code tools (e.g. Terraform)

Otherwise an interest in learning these, with the support of the team, is essential. We're looking for people with a commitment to building, nurturing, and iterating on an ever-evolving data ecosystem.

Other beneficial skills include:

  • Familiarity with Docker and/or Kubernetes (EKS)
  • Implementation / Contribution to building a Data Lake or Data Mesh
  • Having worked with a wide variety of AWS services
  • Open Table Formats (e.gr. Apache Iceberg)

Responsibilities and Requirements:

We expect Senior Machine Learning Scientists to be versatile and have a well-balanced set of skills. You will focus on model training and maintenance with significant capacity for research (developing novel model architectures), dataset construction, and model hardening (preparing the model and code for production pipelines).

Day-to-day, your responsibilities are to:

  • Work with subject matter experts and product owners to determine what questions should be asked and what questions can be answered.
  • Work with subject matter experts to curate, generate, and annotate data, and create optimal datasets following responsible data collection and model maintenance practices.
  • Answer questions and make trainable datasets from raw data, using efficient SQL queries and scripting languages, visualizing when necessary.
  • Develop and tune Machine Learning models, following best practices to select datasets, architectures, and model parameters.
  • Utilize, adopt, and fine-tune Language Models, including third-party LLMs (through prompt engineering and orchestration) and locally hosted LMs.
  • Stay current in the field - read research papers, experiment with new architectures and LLMs, and share your findings.
  • Optimize models for scaled production usage.
  • Communicate insights, as well as the behavior and limitations of models, to peers, subject matter experts, and product owners.
  • Write clean, efficient, and modular code, with automated tests and appropriate documentation.
  • Stay up to date with technology, make good technological choices, and be able to explain them to the organization.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience working with text data to build Deep Learning and ML models, both supervised and unsupervised. Experience with deep learning in other modalities such as vision and speech would be a strong bonus.
  • A strong understanding of the math and theory behind machine learning and deep learning.
  • Software engineering background with 3-5 years of experience (waived for a PhD in Computer Science or related: we use Python, SQL, Unix-based systems, git, and github for collaboration and review).
  • Machine / Deep Learning development skills, including experiment tracking (we use AWS SageMaker, Hugging Face, transformers, PyTorch, scikit-learn, Jupyter, Weights & Biases).
  • An understanding of Language Models, using and training / fine-tuning and a familiarity with industry-standard LM families.
  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, AI, Machine Learning, applied math or related field, with relevant industry experience, or outstanding previous achievements in this role. A Computer Science background is required as opposed to statistics or pure mathematics. Would be a plus:

  • The capability to influence and provide consultation by presenting various options with their respective advantages, disadvantages, and associated risks. Such discussions would involve solving technical or business problems alike.
  • Interpersonal abilities coupled with a customer-centric mindset, enabling you to navigate cultural diversity effectively.
  • A track record of achieving ambitious goals in fast-paced and innovative settings.
  • Experience in documentation and presentation, particularly in supporting customer workshops and producing technical reports and tutorials.

THE ROLE

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in computer vision, machine learning, and deep learning, as well as experience working with neural radiance fields. As a member of our team, your work will be critical in advancing our technology and staying at the forefront of innovation in the field of computer vision and machine learning for AR/VR.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Develop and implement state-of-the-art neural radiance field models for various applications such as novel view synthesis, 3D reconstruction, and relighting
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate neural radiance field models into existing systems and products
  • Design and implement efficient and scalable algorithms for training and deploying neural radiance field models
  • Evaluate and analyze the performance of neural radiance field models and identify areas for improvement
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code
  • Collaborate within the team and cross teams, working with researchers and software

  • Prioritize usability, maintainability, scalability, ease of debugging and clear documentation

WHO YOU ARE

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • Strong background in computer vision, machine learning, and deep learning
  • Experience with neural radiance fields and related techniques such as volume rendering, gaussian splatting, and differentiable rendering
  • Proficiency in Python and experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch
  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated successful collaboration with teams from varying domains and backgrounds
  • Familiar with basic computer vision concepts and knowledge, including depth estimation, multiple view geometry, and related fields*
  • Experience with large-scale dataset processing and management*
  • Knowledge of C++ and experience with real-time graphics programming*
  • Experience with building and maintaining ML infrastructure*

  • The annual salary range for this position is $125,000 to $150,000 plus equity (per qualifications)
