Senior Software Engineer, Media Platform

WistiaRemote (US)

Wistia is hiring a Remote Senior Software Engineer, Media Platform

Wistia is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our team! This role is a great opportunity to work closely with a thoughtful, creative and collaborative team working on exciting products that make business more human with video.

You’ll work on the core of Wistia’s back-end media product, providing our customers with a world-class experience for managing video and audio, launching it to audiences, and analyzing its performance. You’ll work primarily in our modern tech stack with Go, Ruby, ffmpeg, Docker, and Kubernetes while building on our collection of platform services.

We’re a diverse and inclusive engineering team. We’re technology-minded, but customer focused, always aiming to deliver the highest-impact features that prioritize the long-term success of the product.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work comfortably in back-end micro-service development generally related to ingesting, encoding, and delivering video, image, and audio files. We mainly use Go, but sometimes need to work in both Ruby or JavaScript. We aim to use the best language for the problem we’re trying to solve and do not expect engineers coming in to know our particular frameworks.
  • Balance technical considerations with product and business thinking. You aim for the best value, not for perfection.
  • Ship features and deliver value to customers under the constraints of a profitable business where we center the customer and take ownership as company values.
  • Work with engineers across teams on more complex features, for mentoring and knowledge-sharing, to support and care for the Wistia systems, and sometimes just for fun!

Preferred Qualifications / Experience

  • You may be more focused on the back-end and/or service-oriented architecture with an eye for high impact optimizations.
  • You have experience with video-based infrastructure and open source projects in the space (ffmpeg, x264, webm).
  • You’ve worked with CDNs to deliver assets to customers globally.
  • You’ve built integrations with cloud services (AWS, GCP, etc) and APIs in a scalable manner that allow for others on the team to contribute effectively.
  • Your experience with distributed databases has given you a real understanding of the CAP theorem in practice (and where they can fall apart)

Qualifications

  • You have 8+ years' experience as a product or platform engineer.
  • You are a collaborator. Whether through pair programming, a (virtual) whiteboard session, or a casual conversation, collaboration helps the best ideas and practices to proliferate.
  • You have strong communication skills. Each of us has only part of the overall picture in our head at a given time. Explaining ideas at an understandable level of abstraction is critical to achieving a shared vision.
  • You're empathetic and emotionally intelligent. Sometimes things don't go smoothly. A customer gets frustrated, or a coworker does something that bothers you. Understanding where others are coming from, and being in control of and deliberate about how you respond to them, empowers you to solve problems while also being supportive of and sensitive to those around you.
  • You write clean and understandable code. We write code for each other and for our future selves. Code that is clear and tested sets us up for speed, reliability, and a more enjoyable development experience.
  • You know your fundamentals. Fads and frameworks come and go. We’re less worried that you know the Next Hot Thing™ than that you feel comfortable with the underlying data structures, algorithms, languages, and protocols that make web applications work.
  • You are comfortable thinking in trade-offs. Some decisions will always have a downside. Do we want our distributed database to be more consistent, or more available? Should we use a hosted product that will save us time now, but force us to move to a new system in a year? Understanding and negotiating these choices is critical to success here.
  • You value simplicity. Blaise Pascal once wrote, "I'm sorry I wrote you such a long letter; I didn't have time to write a short one." Making things simple and elegant is deceptively difficult, but it’s worth the effort because the result is easier to understand and work with.

Working at Wistia

We try to ensure Wistia is an inclusive and diverse place where everyone feels happy, fulfilled, respected, comfortable, and welcome. We're proud to be an equal opportunity workplace. We care a lot, so our benefits are actually benefits, not just the fun stuff like swag and snacks in the office (though we also have lots of those too!).

We know the biggest investment we can make is in our employees, so we provide:

  • A competitive compensation package that includes internal equity stock options
  • 401k with 3% company contribution, regardless of whether you contribute
  • Fully paid healthcare, dental, and vision insurance (family plans included)
  • Pre-Tax FSA and Dependent Care Account
  • Fitness reimbursement
  • Flexible working hours – work at the times when you operate best, or set aside time for child and/or elderly care responsibilities during traditional “office hours”
  • 16 weeks paid parental leave for all new and expecting parents
  • Flex PTO (pretty common for people to take 4+ weeks off throughout the year)
  • Remote-first culture (work from anywhere in the U.S.)
  • Annual professional development stipend (courses, conferences, and more)
  • New hire bonus to enhance your home office set up
  • Pet insurance discount

Machine Learning powers our AI Writing detection system, gives automated feedback on student writing, investigates authorship of student writing, revolutionizes the creation and grading of assessments, and plays a critical role in many back-end processes.

Responsibilities and Requirements:

We expect Senior Machine Learning Scientists to be versatile and have a well-balanced set of skills. You will focus on model training and maintenance with significant capacity for research (developing novel model architectures), dataset construction, and model hardening (preparing the model and code for production pipelines).

Day-to-day, your responsibilities are to:

  • Work with subject matter experts and product owners to determine what questions should be asked and what questions can be answered.
  • Work with subject matter experts to curate, generate, and annotate data, and create optimal datasets following responsible data collection and model maintenance practices.
  • Answer questions and make trainable datasets from raw data, using efficient SQL queries and scripting languages, visualizing when necessary.
  • Develop and tune Machine Learning models, following best practices to select datasets, architectures, and model parameters.
  • Utilize, adopt, and fine-tune Language Models, including third-party LLMs (through prompt engineering and orchestration) and locally hosted LMs.
  • Stay current in the field - read research papers, experiment with new architectures and LLMs, and share your findings.
  • Optimize models for scaled production usage.
  • Communicate insights, as well as the behavior and limitations of models, to peers, subject matter experts, and product owners.
  • Write clean, efficient, and modular code, with automated tests and appropriate documentation.
  • Stay up to date with technology, make good technological choices, and be able to explain them to the organization.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience working with text data to build Deep Learning and ML models, both supervised and unsupervised. Experience with deep learning in other modalities such as vision and speech would be a strong bonus.
  • A strong understanding of the math and theory behind machine learning and deep learning.
  • Software engineering background with at least 3-5 years of experience (we use Python, SQL, Unix-based systems, git, and github for collaboration and review).
  • Machine / Deep Learning development skills, including experiment tracking (we use AWS SageMaker, Hugging Face, transformers, PyTorch, scikit-learn, Jupyter, Weights & Biases).
  • An understanding of Language Models, using and training / fine-tuning and a familiarity with industry-standard LM families.
  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, AI, Machine Learning, applied math or related field, with relevant industry experience, or outstanding previous achievements in this role. A Computer Science background is required as opposed to statistics or pure mathematics. We’re an applied science group leaning towards deep learning and therefore software development proficiency is a prerequisite.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.

Would be a plus:

  • Familiarity in coding for at-scale production, ranging from best practices to building back-end API services or stand-alone libraries.
  • Essential dev-ops skills (we use Docker, AWS EC2/Batch/Lambda).
  • Familiarity in building front-ends (LLMs or more standard React, Javascript, Flask) for simple demos, POCs and prototypes.

Senior Product Designer II

WistiaRemote (US)

Wistia is hiring a Remote Senior Product Designer II

About Wistia

Wistia is a video marketing software company working to make business more human with video. We help our customers stay ahead of the curve by enabling them to record videos, host webinars, edit and organize videos, as well as measure performance–all in one platform. We're super excited to help businesses achieve their goals through simple and delightful video-focused products.

Responsibilities

We are seeking a Senior Product Designer II to lead design for our recording software, a core capability of Wistia’s creative tools. On the Record team you’ll design features that enable users to record videos remotely with a team or independently, as well as collect recordings from collaborators. You’ll explore everything from the aesthetics of the video itself to nuanced producer interactions, empowering non-experts to create polished and impactful content with minimal effort. You’ll have the ability to make a broad impact as you lead collaborative efforts, connecting your work with teams across the platform.

You’ll report to our Director of Product Design who leads design across our Create pillar, which also includes video editing and webinar software. You’ll be involved in each stage of development, from strategy and creative exploration to implementation. You’ll collaboratively shape a vision for Record’s future and will contribute a user-centered lens to feature prioritization. Embedded within a cross-functional team of design, product, and engineering partners, you’ll help uphold the following values for inclusive design:

Intentional Simplicity.Design is best when the product is the simplest for users rather than the designer. Your designs strike the right balance of simplicity, making our tools straightforward and intuitive to new users versus unremarkable.

Meaningful Creativity. This is achieved when the final product results from many inputs and active exploration. You’ll help designers add meaning through their creativity and focus ideation around a real customer problem or desire.

Polished Presentation. This means much more than pixel-perfect design; it includes the assets and processes to implement the design successfully. Our team should feel inspired when we see each other’s designs at every stage along the way to implementation.

Ambitious and Determined. Ambitious design is, by definition, difficult to achieve. So, when designing for the future, you’ll consider long-term benefits, not just short-term inconveniences. Helping your team be ambitious sets us up for better outcomes, considering what we know about the business, the market, and excellent product design processes.

You have:

  • 8+ years of real-world experience designing software or web applications
  • Expertise with visual design fundamentals, interaction design, and multi-step workflows
  • A user-centered approach, articulating the “why” in terms of user insights and business needs
  • Strong design intuition, which affords you the ability to make confident decisions
  • Excellent cross-discipline collaboration, balancing user advocacy, curiosity, and compromise

To be the most successful here, you:

  • Bring experience with B2B SAAS, recording, audio, video, streaming, or marketing products
  • Lead user research to build empathy and make informed decisions
  • Are highly proficient with Figma, leveraging design systems, and responsive design
  • Account for accessibility guidelines through design implementaiton
  • Are your team’s strongest user advocate and uphold a high bar for quality
  • Partner with your team to define near-term requirements and explore strategic opportunities
  • Proactively engage with folks inside and outside your team, seeking insights to shape decisions

  • Flexible working hours – work at the times when you operate best, or set aside time for child and/or elderly care responsibilities during traditional “office hours”
  • 16 weeks paid parental leave for all new and expecting parents
  • Unlimited PTO (pretty common for people to take 4+ weeks off throughout the year)
  • Remote-first culture (work from anywhere in the U.S.)
  • Annual professional development stipend (courses, conferences, and more)
  • New hire bonus to enhance your home office setup
  • Pet insurance discount

Growth Product Manager

Much Better AdventuresUnited Kingdom, Remote

Much Better Adventures is hiring a Remote Growth Product Manager

We’re an ambitious, remote-first travel scale-up, eager to grow our team. We are looking for a versatile, collaborative, experienced and ambitious growth product manager to help us go to the next level as we rapidly expand into new countries and audiences.

Read more about working at Much Better Adventures.

The Role

You’ll be part of a dynamic micro-team with a clear focus, bringing together engineering, product management, and design to work towards shared goals.

You and your dedicated “two-pizza” team will own the “pre-booking” experience for at least the next year. Your responsibility will be to make sure that customers who come to our site find everything they need to make a decision to book with us and travel on one of our life-changing adventures.

On the whole our first-time customers go through a considered purchase journey that resembles B2B more than e-commerce, all while driven by an increasingly strong emotional connection to our adventures and fellow customers. This means that we need to help them with:

  • Inspiration – help them find and fall in love with a shortlist of trips from among 200+ unique adventures
  • Information – give them what they need to choose one trip
  • Reassurance – help them get comfortable with all the details and logistics beyond the trip itself

Giving them this information is the best way to make sure they are entirely prepared before departure; have the best possible experience while on the trip; and after returning, that they quickly discover and book their next adventure with us.

We have had some success this year with helping customers progress on this journey through email and other content journeys, and developing this further will be a large part of your role.

This is an extremely exciting role for the right person, and you will expected to demonstrate high levels of ownership, agency, entrepreneurialism, teamwork and humility in order to be successful.

You will be working cross-functionally, especially with our content and operations teams, to systematically address and remove the current frictions in our pre-booking experience and ultimately to demonstrably increase conversion.

Your decision-making will be critically important, as will your soft skills in working across a small team that will include a product designer, and 1-2 two engineers, as well as members of other teams. You will work mainly on the existing web experience, and experience leading web teams is essential, but as we consider mobile, experience in mobile and native apps is highly desirable.

We will be looking for applicants with:

  • Clear, demonstrable and sophisticated understanding and hands-on experience of the techniques and methods of modern product discovery and product delivery
  • A combination of B2B and B2C experience highly desired
  • Provable ability to:
    • Learn multiple functional areas of business – engineering, design, operations, finance, sales, or marketing etc
    • Figure out creative solutions to hard problems with many constraints
    • Use sound judgement to assess risks
    • Lay out your argument in a well-structured, data-informed, written narrative
    • Engage with engineers, designers, and company leaders in a constructive and collaborative relationship
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience
    • An entrepreneurial and creative environment where great ideas are actively encouraged, and taking responsibility for them is expected
    • The warm fuzzy feeling that comes with knowing you are making a huge difference to small independent businesses, local economies and communities
    • 38 days holiday per year (inclusive of public holidays) - to be used when you like

  • This is an extremely important hire for us, and we want to balance our need to have conviction in the right candidate with our asks of you. We expect the process to follow these steps but please let us know in your covering letter if you are uncomfortable with any of the steps.
  1. Application with one-page CVandone-page covering letter (including salary expectations)
  2. Screening interview (30m)
