Engineering Manager - Growth

About the Role:

As a software engineering manager for the Payroll Onboarding Team, you’ll empower a team of 5+ engineers making the flow simple and easy for companies new to Gusto, whether they’re a brand new business running their first ever payroll, or they’re moving hundreds of employees to Gusto. You’ll collaborate with your team’s product and design leads, as well as partners across sales, marketing, and customer success to drive iteration and innovation for one of the first and most important user experiences at Gusto.

About the Team:

The Payroll Onboarding team owns the front door for all small businesses signing up for Gusto. Setting up payroll is both a huge step for a new business and a complicated, potentially scary multi-step process. The team is tasked with leveraging technologies like OCR and AI to build a human centric onboarding flow that reduces the manual work and provides businesses with a joyful first payroll experience.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Build and foster an inclusive, collaborative, and impact-oriented culture
  • Conduct regular 1:1s with your team members to support their continued growth and learning
  • Collaborate with our product management and design teams to define problem spaces and lead technical projects from initial planning, execution, to final delivery
  • Partner with Product, Design, Data and others within and outside your team
  • Help build and manage team processes and create a culture that enables the team to do its best work
  • Provide and receive mentorship and peer support

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 8+ years of professional software development experience, preferably in B2B software and/or growth engineering
  • At least 2 years empowering engineering teams
  • Preference for experience building and maintaining onboarding funnels, checkout flows, or other complex multi-step workflows
  • Experience managing and mentoring a software development team
  • Ability to work iteratively with data and experimentation driven development, and a record of driving impact reflected in metrics and customer sentiment
  • Experience working cross functionally with product, design, data, sales, support, and marketing

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $170,000-$202,000 in Denver, $185,000-$219,000 for Los Angeles and most remote locations, $199,000-$247,000 for San Francisco, New York, and Seattle. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience, level, and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 daysper week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.

When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required.

Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Gusto.

About the Role

This role is for a Senior Engineering Manager where you’ll be a manager of managers. You will be leading across multiple teams in an org of around 20-30 people. We’re expanding and your role as the Senior EM will be to grow and build new squads as needed. Your direct reports will include Tech Leads, Senior Engineers and 2-3 Engineering Managers.

The interview process:

After an initial informal recruiter call you go through two main stages

  1. Initial Call (1 hour) You'll meet with one of our Senior Engineering Managers or Engineering Directors. They'll ask you about your previous experience, in particular people leadership, product delivery and technical leadership. They’ll ask example based questions (‘Tell me about a time when…’)

  2. Loop Stage (3 hours 30 mins) The Loop stage consists of 3 x 60 min interviews that take place over 1-2 days (depending on your availability) and one 30 minute reverse interview (more details below).

The Loop is one stage and the interviews in this stage are:

- Team and Org Management (1 hour)
An example based interview with 1-2 of our engineering leaders. They’re interested to hear examples from your previous experience on the teams you’ve led, how you’ve shaped and partnered with product, and the impact you had.

- System Design (1 hour)
You'll partner with a Staff or Principal Engineer on a technical whiteboarding exercise.

- Behavioural (1 hour)
Similar to Team and Org Management, this is an example based interview with 1-2 Engineering Leaders. This interview focuses on your people leadership style and core behaviours as an Engineering Manager.

- Chat with an Engineering Leader (30 mins)
At Monzo, we believe interviews are a two-way street. This will be your opportunity to ask us any questions about Monzo, engineering leadership or our teams – whatever’s on your mind.

All things going well, you'll have completed the hiring process ????

If you’d like to ask a question sooner, email tech-hiring@monzo.com. Please also use that email to let us know if there's anything we can do to make your application process easier for you, because of disability, neurodiversity or any other personal reason.

Position Description

Software engineers at EA enable our mission by building web applications to get data in the hands of educators at the right time for them to take action to improve student outcomes. We are seeking a Software Engineering Manager to lead a small team of engineers in the design and development of web applications and tools to support our mission. The person hired for this role will supervise full-stack software engineers and work as part of a team of managers across other engineering specialties within EA. A typical project of ours is a full-stack web application built in TypeScript, React, Express, PostgreSQL, and AWS, and prior experience with any of these tools is helpful. Previous people management experience is preferred, but we also encourage candidates who do not yet have direct people management experience to apply, and we will consider other types of leadership experience as well.

If you are looking to build software with an eye towards a social mission to help students, we encourage you to apply. We are looking for passionate technologists that accept nothing but the best for our education systems. For some background on the kinds of tools we build, check out thisblog post on EA’s website.
