Qualifications

We’re looking for a passionate Software Engineer to join a team that’s building our global scale, cloud native microservices data warehouse.  

Our new data warehouse solution aims to create a single endpoint for accessing and managing data from a vast pool of sources and structures with exciting requirements, such as handling terabytes of data in real-time. We use a multi-cloud strategy where the software stack is built with a mix of programming languages such as .NET Core and Go, as well as database technologies like Graph databases and GraphQL.   

We believe in DevOps culture where close collaboration is key in an environment where all team members have shared responsibility for development, maintenance and operations of our software. The team focuses heavily on accountability and quality in the development cycle where the developer of each service is responsible for ensuring that relevant monitoring, alerting and logging capabilities are built into the service and that automated test suites are continuously updated. Furthermore, each developer is responsible for acting on issues which show up in the production, staging and development environments.   

The role and responsibility will change continuously within the team as we strive to match given problems with the right technologies and expertise throughout the development process.

As a Customer Engineer you are responsible for helping lighthouse customers and prospects succeed with SkySQL and Xpand. Our customer engineers act as subject matter experts and customer advocates for key MariaDB products and services. As the primary escalation point for SkySQL and Xpand, you will utilize advanced troubleshooting skills and creative problem-solving capabilities. You must be self-motivated and capable of working autonomously.

We are a “virtual” team, distributed globally, telecommuting via the internet. We make heavy use of email, Slack, the web, SSH, and similar “remote” technologies. Prior experience in this form of working environment is ideal.

Because we must provide coverage to our customers 24x7x365, this position does occasionally involve work on nights, weekends and holidays, however, we leverage our global team to minimize the impact as much as possible with a focus on work/life balance. Work location is very flexible. MariaDB does not sponsor relocation or work visas.

Responsibilities

  • Help customers:
    • Architect SkySQL and Xpand deployments
    • Proactively plan for growth in data and transaction volumes
    • Migrate effectively from legacy (commercial) database systems to SkySQL or Xpand
  • Enable SkySQL customers for self-service
  • Participate in presales activities such as:
    • Joining sales calls and on-site visits (post COVID-19) with prospects to make technical presentations
    • Leading highly technical PoCs for Xpand/SkySQL, working closely with the Account Sales Engineer
  • Work closely with SRE and Product Management teams to help steer the products based on customer and prospect needs
  • Train/enable SkyDBAs on SOPs
  • Key member in SkySQL and Xpand escalation calls
  • Help provide oversight and onboarding pf lighthouse SkySQL/Xpand accounts
  • Perform DBA activities remotely with SkySQL customers around the world
  • Automate various SkySQL tasks

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Computer Science, a similar technical field of study, or equivalent practical experience is required; MS or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or a related field is preferred

  • 10+ years of experience building and operating cloud-based, highly available, and scalable online serving or streaming systems utilizing large, diverse data sets in production

  • Experience implementing the data strategy through a platform-oriented approach that invests in tools that capture processes and decisions that scale with a growing multi-organizational platform user-base.

  • Expertise with diverse DB technologies like Presto, Athena, Hive, PostgreSQL, Graph DBs, NoSQL DBs, Snowflake, etc.

  • Comfortable using the majority of commonly used data technologies and languages such as Python, Java or Scala, Kafka, Spark, Flink, Airflow, Splunk, Datadog, Kubernetes, Jenkins, or similar

  • Expertise with all aspects of data systems, including ETL/ELT, aggregation strategy, performance optimization, and technology trade-off

  • Understanding of data access patterns, streaming technology, data validation, data modeling, data performance, cost optimization

  • Experience defining data engineering/architecture best practices at a department and organizational level and establishing standards for operational excellence and code and data quality at a multi-project level

  • Current on new industry trends (e.g., DS, ML, Data Engineering) and designs solutions for complex systems to meet ambiguous business needs

  • Possess strong knowledge or familiarity with Apache Beam, or AWS managed services for data (Glue, Athena, Redshift, Data Pipeline, Flink, Spark) and Snowflake

  • Experience in processing structured and unstructured data into a form suitable for analysis and reporting with integration with a variety of data metric providers ranging from advertising, web analytics, and consumer devices

  • Functional knowledge of common algorithms, data structures, object-oriented programming, and design

Job Description

SSENSE is looking for a Senior Developer to join our Studio Productivity team. The Senior Developer will take complex features of the product roadmap, break them down into their required technical components, and develop them independently. 

The ideal candidate will own at least one component of the SSENSE technical stack and hold accountability for its SLAs. They will actively contribute to knowledge dissemination within the organization, participate in the recruiting and onboarding of new employees, and mentor Junior Developers on the team. 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

Product delivery 

Develop a deep understanding of the product roadmap for the squad, including future features to be developed 

Contribute to high-level estimation and participate in laying out the development sequences, challenging the product roadmap and identifying areas where technical debt can be reduced or avoided 

Complete independently complex development tasks and actively contribute to pushing code to production Write testable, efficient, and reusable code suitable for continuous integration and deployment, respecting best practices and SSENSE development standards 

Review Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams and technical documentation 

Ownership and accountability 

Be accountable for code quality, with the assistance of a QA Analyst, by conducting adequate testing Be accountable for performance, reliability, scalability and resilience of at least one technical component owned by the squad through SLAs and monitoring
