Solutions & Tools to Grow Your Business
Square builds common business tools in unconventional ways so more people can start, run, and grow their businesses. When Square started, it was difficult and expensive (or just plain impossible) for some businesses to take credit cards. Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a mobile phone into a credit card reader. Since then Square has been building an entire business toolkit of both hardware and software products including Square Capital, Square Terminal, Square Payroll, and more. We’re working to find new and better ways to help businesses succeed on their own terms—and we’re looking for people like you to help shape tomorrow at Square.

Square is hiring a Remote Senior Data Scientist, Square for Retail

Company Description

Since we first opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely – and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take a payment and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together. So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, run a busy kitchen, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. And across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow all in one place.

Today, we’re a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex commerce operations, sellers just starting out, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers scale, so do our solutions. We all grow together.

There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a business that is big, meaningful, and lasting. And we are helping sellers around the world do the same.

Job Description

From the cozy local wine store to the trendy sneaker pop-up, the Retail team at Square is equipping retail sellers with simple solutions to complex problems - like predictive analytics and fluid, omni-channel capabilities to meet customers wherever they are. Square’s mission is economic empowerment, and Data Scientists support this by using data to understand and empathize with our customers, thereby enabling us to build a remarkable product experience. You and your fellow data science & analytics teammates on the Retail Analytics team are embedded within product and marketing sub-teams (“squads”), leveraging data engineering, analytics, statistics, and machine learning to empower data-driven decision making in the full life cycle of product development.

You will:

  • Partner with the product, design, and marketing stakeholders to identify, prioritize, and answer the most important questions where analytics can have a material impact

  • Apply a diverse set of tactics such as statistics, quantitative reasoning, and machine learning; discerning where simple analytics solutions (e.g. a quick heuristic or visualization) are preferable to complex solutions (e.g. machine learning)

  • Contribute to the data strategy of product engineering, influencing engineers to make well-informed architecture and design decisions that affect data at Square

  • Provide comprehensive day-to-day analytics support to partner teams, developing tools and resources to empower data access and self-service so your advanced expertise can be leveraged where it is most impactful

  • Lead and mentor others on medium and long-term cross-functional initiatives that span product domains

Qualifications

You have:

  • 5+ years of analytics experience and a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent

  • Fluency in SQL, with experience exploring and understanding large, complex datasets & data systems

  • Experience working with technical and non-technical partners, such as product managers and product marketing managers

  • Experience with statistical and machine-learning techniques to solve practical business problems such as hypothesis testing, cross-selling, clustering user archetypes, and predicting churn

  • Very strong communication skills: ability to clearly communicate complex results to technical and non-technical audiences in verbal, visual, and written media

  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional projects that depend on the contributions of others in a variety of disciplines

  • Experience maintaining a backlog and performing independently

  • Experience with a BI tool such as Looker or Tableau

Even better:

  • An advanced degree (M.S., PhD.) in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Physical Sciences, Economics, or a related technical field

  • Experience with data warehouse design, development and best practices

Technologies we use and teach:

  • SQL (Snowflake)

  • Optimizely

  • Airflow (ETL)

  • Looker, Amplitude, Tableau

  • Python (pandas, scikit-learn, etc.)

Job Description

As a founding member of the Cash Mobile Developer Experience team, you will be responsible for building and maintaining tools that help every mobile engineer at Cash App accomplish their jobs in a more efficient manner. We’ve grown our mobile organization significantly, and we believe the time is right to revisit core pieces of ourinternal infrastructure that now support 10x the number of engineers they were originally designed for. We believe solving these problems will mean embracing open source technologies, and we are looking for someone that shares our beliefs.

This team is actively being bootstrapped, so comfort with ambiguity and an ability to collect requirements in a self-directed manner will be key to early success. Initial projects for this team will include (but are not limited to):

  • Migrating Cash App’s mobile build pipelines to Bazel
  • Identifying build inefficiencies to increase developer velocity
  • Improving mobile observability by adopting Datadog
  • Adopting modern CI infrastructure, e.g. Buildkite, and building GitHub Actions to support our developer workflows

You will:

  • Build and maintain tools that increase the leverage of every mobile engineer at Cash App
  • Formulate and execute our build tooling strategy for our iOS and Android products
  • Solicit input from our mobile engineering organization to solve problems holistically across our ecosystem
  • Have a meaningful impact on the speed at which our engineering organization delivers to our customers
  • Maintain, monitor, and remediate issues within (and surrounding) the build systems and tools that you have created
  • Embrace and contribute to open source software where needed

Qualifications

You have:

  • Experience creating readable, well-crafted, and maintainable code
  • Exceptional communication skills in written and oral form (describing ideas, discussing approaches, presentations, status updates)

Square is hiring a Remote Senior Software Engineer, Android - Invoices

Square Invoices is the easiest way for merchants to close sales and collect payments remotely. Our customers rely on our products because they are well designed, easy to use, and integrated with their business. We focus on building the best tools to help our merchants close sales and get paid quickly, anywhere, at any time. At the same time we are doing this in an efficient and scaleable way, making smart choices about how to automate critical functions for our merchants. We area full stack, product oriented team, spanning across engineering, design, product, and marketing. Our team is focused, fast-moving, and rapidly growing with an abundance of growth and impact opportunities.

As a member of the Invoices mobile team, you will work within Square’s Point of Sale codebase and have the ability to impact all of the apps in our ecosystem including our Invoices app.

You’ll need to…

  • Be proficient in Java and/or Kotlin for development (we use both).

  • Enjoy working on mobile apps at all levels – from networking up to user interfaces and whatever’s in between.

  • Build high availability and highly resilient systems which can accept and report payments no matter the network or device conditions.

  • Collaborate with iOS, Android, and Server engineers to ship features.

  • Work with product managers and designers to refine and define product scope and design.

  • Respond to customer feedback to improve our products.

Qualifications

You have:

  • 4+ years professional experience in software engineering

  • Strong communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally with other functions, such as designers, product managers, data scientists, marketing, and business development to deliver a great product

  • An appreciation for the connection between the software you build and the experience it delivers to customers

  • The ability to provide technical mentorship and guidance to engineers of varying experience levels

  • The ability to adapt to the different stages of product development. This can mean building intentionally scrappy code to iterate quickly, or building a sustainable system that will support our product for years to come.

  • Demonstrated, first hand experience building products at scale
