ABOUT THE TEAM

 

Forge is the platform and systems engineering team at Rubrik. Our mission is to develop a highly reliable, secure, scalable and performant software defined platform that radically simplifies building, deploying, and managing physical and virtual appliances on-premise and in the cloud.

 

We design the appliance platform and build the core infrastructure for Operating System, Networking, Clustering, and Containerization. In addition, we provide common infrastructure services encompassing system monitoring, system management, cluster management, and data migration. All of these serve as the backbone for powering Rubrik’s industry leading Data Protection, Security and Data Management solutions.

 

ABOUT THE JOB

  • Full stack ownership of features, including design, implementation, and testing
  • Design and develop enterprise-grade features at the platform and infrastructure level 
  • Design and develop infrastructure services for system monitoring, detecting faults, and automatically self-healing the distributed systems
  • Design, develop, and operationalize high-performance, scalable, reliable and resilient system infrastructure-level services
  • Diagnose and resolve problems in complex customer environments

ABOUT YOU

  • BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science or related field
  • 3+ years of software development experience on Linux, preferably in Platform/Systems/Kernel or Networking domain
  • Strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems design
  • Strong background in Systems Programming
  • Expertise in debugging and troubleshooting performance and system-level issues 
  • Extensive experience with Linux kernel or equivalent and kernel debugging
  • Proficient in Python, Go, and either C++, Java, or Scala
  • Large distributed systems design and development experience is preferred
  • Knowledge of Storage, Filesystems, or Data Protection technologies is a plus

The minimum and maximum base salaries for this role are posted below; additionally, the role is eligible for bonus potential, equity and benefits. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the role based on U.S. location. Within the range, the salary offered will be determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

$176,800$265,200 USD

You will partner with peer organizations such as cloud operations, SRE, private cloud delivery, developer platform, and data strategy to deliver an easy to use, secure, self-service approach of cloud engineering and operations to our business and regional partners. 

Role Responsibilities

  • Work with teams in an agile environment to design, develop, and test Self-Service Private Cloud infrastructure delivery platforms using modern cloud delivery concepts.
  • Collaborate with software engineers and architects to design and implement secure private cloud infrastructure for multiple Experian application environments.
  • Identify and deploy cloud services that meet specific technical requirements.
  • Partner with business teams to define technical requirements for modernization of legacy applications and systems and conversion to infrastructure as code deployment models (CICD Pipelines, Terraform, Ansible)
  • Collaborate with rest of Experian IT Services and Global Security Office teams to ensure corporate policies and security requirements are implemented and followed for all cloud services
  • Serve as the most senior technical expert on cloud deployed products and infrastructure within the corporate Private Cloud Infrastructure and conversion from legacy traditional infrastructure architecture
  • Leads the design, development, implementation and support of on-prem infrastructure, including compute, storage, backup, network, virtualization technologies, physical and virtual servers.
  • Design, develop, and deploy containerized solutions (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Create and maintain scalable cloud native architecture, deployable on all major public cloud providers(AWS, Azure, GCP) and Experian Internal Private Cloud Solution (GreenLake)
  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related experience
  • 10+ years’ experience in implementing deploying and managing systems and applications in cloud service providers (Azure, GCP, AWS preferred)
  • 5+ years’ experience in architecting scalable Cloud solutions including compute, storage, databases, and networking
  • 10+ years’ experience designing, implementing, and supporting large scale on-prem compute, storage, backup and network infrastructure, including physical servers and VMware virtualization technologies.
  • Strong background in Linux OS support (RHEL and SUSE)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of taking conceptual requirements and designing them in the cloud, including systems, servers, appliances, network components, and security

  • Perform system maintenance tasks such as service restarts and server patching.
  • Ensure new production/feature rollouts are coordinated through Production Control, including any documentation and checklists required.
  • Other Duties as Required.

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 5:00 am to 2:00 pm Central Time. Weekend On-Call rotation required every 7 weeks. 

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years’ experience in computer operations or related field. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience with Windows Server operating systems.
  • Experience with Linux administration is desired. 
  • General knowledge of TCP/IP networks and experience troubleshooting connectivity issues.
  • Knowledge or experience with various tools like, Dynatrace, SolarWind, ServiceNow, Jira, SysDIG, VSphere, MSMQ.

What You’ll Do

  • Remotely install, upgrade, operate and maintain bare-metal Kubernetes clusters (up to thousands of nodes each)
  • Handle cluster degradation, recovery and resizing using our fleet management tooling
  • Perform out-of-hours on-call response for critical incidents as part of a well-balanced on-call rotation
  • Work on improving our tooling, automation, and processes, for both daily operations, alerting, and incident response
  • Dive into systems at a low level to solve unique cluster problems and write up your findings
  • Assist customers with high-level Kubernetes questions and integration with applications, storage and authentication
  • Assist with initial cluster build-outs and validation to help identify failed hardware before customer delivery
  • Work closely with our HPC Ops and Datacenter Ops teams on issues that require lower-level expertise or cross-functional solutions
  • Mentor and assist less-experienced team members
  • Have a voice in our product direction and help us think about how to minimize operational costs and complexity

You

  • Are an experienced operations engineer, SRE, sysadmin or similar with a deep knowledge of running Linux clusters and systems
  • Are very familiar with running on bare-metal (including knowledge of BMCs, kernel drivers, PXE, RAID, VLANs, hypervisors)
  • Have a good understanding of containers, virtualisation, and the mechanisms underpinning them
  • Have a good understanding of daily operation, bug-fixing and maintenance of Kubernetes
  • Have experience in an on-call environment and with incident response
  • Can perform incident post-mortems and develop procedures and tooling to prevent root causes from reoccurring
  • Have an excellent ability to learn on-the-fly and adapt to solve problems
  • Are able to work either independently with limited direction, or as part of a team
  • Are able to work with customers during incidents either via tickets, live messaging, or as part of a larger call.

  • Work in tandem with architects, the security operations center (SOC), incident responders, and information technology infrastructure and development team members.
  • Collaborate with vendors for procurement and support.
  • Assist with incident response and system stability issues as they occur. This may include involvement outside of regular work hours, and responsiveness is expected.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS      
  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, Information Security/Assurance, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 6-8+ years’ experience in cybersecurity, with a system administration and/or security engineering background.
  • Highly technical and analytical expertise, with a proven deep background in technology design, deployment, implementation, and delivery.
  • Solid understanding of cybersecurity principles, best practices, and frameworks, such as NIST Cybersecurity Framework and CIS Controls
  • Working knowledge of Windows, Linux, and Unix (macOS) operating systems.
  • Experience researching, deploying, tracking, and maintaining security technology across a large enterprise infrastructure.
  • Strong communication skills with a customer service mindset when interfacing with internal and external users.

Systems Engineer - Compute Hardware

Cloudflare’s Infrastructure group is responsible for building our global network. Our Hardware Engineering team helps research, design, test, and deploy new equipment enabling compute, storage, and network. Deployed across 200+ cities in 100+ countries, the hardware we select helps improve the security, reliability, and performance of the Internet.

What you'll do

We need to make thoughtful infrastructure choices affecting a significant portion of the Internet. Hardware we work with includes servers, routers, switches, optical equipment, power distribution units, cables, optics, and more. As a Hardware Systems Engineer, you will work with colleagues on the Hardware Engineering, Product teams, and Hardware Sourcing teams to evaluate and inform decisions around new hardware.

  • Design hardware (Compute, AI/ML, and accelerators across traditional system boundaries which are efficient, secure, reliable and serviceable) for cloud customer workloads
  • Develop and deploy Cloudflare’s next generation of servers, and other innovative technologies as part of Cloudflare’s data center infrastructure 
  • Experiment with different designs and solutions for Cloudflare’s hardware and work cross-functionally with Product teams and Hardware Sourcing to enact your suggestions globally
  • Work with vendors to obtain, debug, and maintain the most performant, power efficient and cost effective next-generation compute hardware and firmware for Cloudflare’s workloads
  • Develop tools and automation to evaluate and optimize hardware performance
  • Communicate your results and updates through blog posts, internal talks, and tickets

Examples of desirable skills, knowledge and experience

  • Extensive experience with computer hardware architecture, design engineering, validation, performance benchmarking, debugging, and deployment used in the data center
  • Relevant engineering disciplines include ASIC development, Computer hardware engineering and Electrical engineering.
  • Previous experience in testing, measuring, and/or simulating hardware performance and an understanding of no-stone-left-unturned experimentation
  • Track record of driving engineering projects from idea to experiment to implementation
  • Demonstrated success in working with ODMs and technology vendors
  • Professional-level proficiency in Python, Go, or similar programming and/or scripting languages
  • Good Linux systems knowledge

Bonus Points

  • Knowledge of XPU/accelerator architectures is a plus. 
  • Experience in a hyperscale cloud infrastructure role also valuable

Compensation

Compensation may be adjusted depending on work location.

  • For Colorado-based hires: Estimated annual salary of $137,000 - $167,000.
  • For New York City, Washington, and California (excluding Bay Area) based hires: Estimated annual salary of $154,000 - $188,000.
  • For Bay Area-based hires: Estimated annual salary of $162,000 - $198,000.

Engineering Manager in Test - Zero Trust Client Automation

What you’ll do

We are looking for an Engineering Manager in Test to lead our Zero Trust QA/SDET team and grow our desktop client automation and testing.

As the Engineering Manager in Test, you and your team will own, improve, and maintain our end-to-end (E2E) testing automation frameworks & processes that enables all engineers to write E2E tests to guarantee the quality and reliability of the clients. You and your team will work closely with our client teams to define and refine our approach to testing (automated and manual), and drive the direction of our testing strategy to ensure the reliable and scalable testing of our software.

You will lead a multidisciplinary team, who writes high-quality, low-complexity code for test automation (E2E testing framework), sets up and manage test infrastructure (e.g. integration with CI/CD platforms, VM orchestration), and creates release test plans. You will also be expected to use your passion and extensive testing experience to instil, and advocate for, best testing practices in all the teams you will collaborate with.

Examples of desirable skills, knowledge, and experience

  • Demonstrable experience leading a team of SDETs working on E2E automation projects
  • Excellent software engineering skills, with experience writing & designing high-quality, highly-documented, low-complexity code
  • Empathetic, proactive, and constructive communication skills, verbal and written
  • Proficiency in one or more common cross-platform scripting language (Python preferred)
  • Deep understanding of automation methodology and tooling
  • Hands-on experience developing E2E automation frameworks for desktop clients
  • Experience with automating E2E testing of network-based apps, especially VPNs (e.g. DNS, IPsec, WireGuard, QUIC, throttling, packet loss, etc.)
  • Demonstrable experience working on multi-platform desktop client automation
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of macOS, Windows, and/or Linux platforms and how to test native apps on each
  • Experience setting up or working with multi-platform VM orchestration
  • Bonus: Knowledge of Go and/or Rust
