Rincon Consultants, Inc. is seeking a Biologist / Technical Writer to support our utility programs, specifically to prepare and support the preparation of a variety of technical documents. This position’s responsibilities include preparation of technical and permitting documents, supporting Project Managers with execution of projects, and coordinating with other staff and support services (GIS, field staff, production) for the execution of assignments. Rincon is a California-based company; however, this position could be filled remotely from anywhere within the United States if the candidate has the pertinent qualifications and aptitude.


What Do You Get To Do In This Position:

  • Technical Work
    • Coordinate with field staff on survey results
    • Prepare technical reports necessary to complete biological documentation for specific projects, including but not limited to:
      • Biological Resources Assessment Reports
      • Biological Assessments
      • Biological Monitoring Report
      • Environmental Compliance Reports
      • Biological Resources section of CEQA documents (EIR, IS/MND)
      • Biological Resources section of NEPA documents (EIS, EA)
      • Permitting Applications
      • Biological Resources Mitigation Plans (e.g., Vegetation Management Plan, Bird and Bat Conservation Plan, Wildlife Relocation Plans, etc.)
    • Work with biology managers to obtain, summarize and analyze biological data for inclusion in biology documents such as biological evaluations, biological assessments, and natural environment studies
    • Work with planning managers to obtain, summarize and analyze biological data for inclusion in planning documents such as environmental impact reports, initial studies, mitigated negative declarations, environmental impact statements, and environmental assessments
    • Track and manage environmental compliance and regulatory requirements during project construction phases
    • Perform other duties as requested by supervisor(s)


This Job Might Be For You If You Have The Following:

  • BS/BA or MA/MS in Biology or other directly related discipline and 3-5 years (full-time equivalent) of directly related professional experience, specifically the drafting of technical reports in support of CEQA and/or NEPA
  • Excellent technical writing, organizational, schedule, and budget management skills
  • Successful experience providing direction to team members on projects, solution-oriented
  • Experience with fostering positive relationships with staff, clients, agencies, and subconsultants
  • Demonstrated experience with the following:
    • Organizing, executing, and coordinating overall project assignments
    • Coordinating general field biology assessments (often in adverse weather / terrain conditions) including, but not limited to, endangered species / habitat assessments, resource constraints analyses, sensitive species protocol surveys, wildlife identification, botanical identification and inventories, focused rare plant surveys, vegetation mapping, tree surveys, jurisdictional delineations, wetland mitigation and monitoring plans, open space management plans and other natural resources management plans, GPS & GIS mapping, monitoring for the environmental compliance of large and small projects, including planning, implementation, and monitoring for habitat restoration
    • Technical writing (BRAs, BAs, NESs, bio sections of CEQA/NEPA docs or similar technical reports)
    • Working with planning managers to gather and prepare material and data for planning documents such as environmental impact reports, initial studies, and mitigated negative declarations
    • Working with interdisciplinary teams: experience working with technical experts in cultural resources, hazardous materials, water quality, land use planning, and air quality is a plus
    • Managing environmental compliance on construction projects

The Technical Writer/Editor will review documents, compile inputs/corrections, resolve incompatible comments, and provide final publishable documentation. They will be ensuring they are 508 compliant and editing as needed to make it compliant. They will organize and prepare information and data for use in a wide variety of complex technical publications requiring in-depth knowledge and understanding of the subject matter and allied fields. The Technical Writer/Editor will also work with end users to gather information and convert it into written narrative and documents. This position is open to remote delivery anywhere within the U.S., to include the District of Columbia.
Must Have:

  • 10 years of experience in editing/writing and explaining highly technical data and information in simplistic grade school language for end users of complex IT systems and projects.
  • Experience with 508 compliance
  • Experience in gathering, preparing and distributing technical meeting minutes or working session notes that clearly articulate attendance, discussion topics and action items/outcomes.
  • Expert Microsoft Office skills, specifically in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
  • Experience in the application a variety of word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, and scheduling tools.
  • Able to provide documentation that will be able to easily understand and provide documentation that can be used for training purposes
  • Must have experience in meeting with authors and other team representatives to review documents, compile inputs/corrections, resolve incompatible comments, and provide final publishable documentation.
  • Ability to complete tasks independently and work as part of a team on larger more complex projects under the direction of a Project Manager or a senior level Engineer

Your Career

As a Professional Services Technical Writer, you’ll play a key role in helping Professional Services (PS) teams produce high quality customer facing documents like high-level and low-level designs, as-built documents, methodology guides, knowledge base content, and contracts. By developing high-quality content and templates, you will ensure the PS team’s success in delivering our services.

We are looking for a writer who is passionate about how our users experience documentation, curious about how the products work, and determined to develop best practices that enable our consultants and customers to successfully deploy our technologies. 

In this role, you will report to the Director of PS Operations and will support the global PS team with our technical writing needs.

  • You’re curious, not afraid to be hands-on with the products, and arefamiliar with network and cloud security deployments so you can empathize with the challenges our customers face

  • You like writing more than you like doing anything else and you believe that delivering high quality documentation is the cornerstone of customer success -You have an innate ability to think like and write for administrators, and can articulate not only how something works, but also when and why to use a particular configuration -You can also follow an established writing style guide and work with your team to provide consistent and cohesive content

  • You are creative, and love to experiment with new ways to present information in a way that enables a positive experience for our customers

  • You can take large amounts of technical details and organize them into topics that users can easily find and use

  • You’re not afraid to propose changes and have a proactive and open-minded attitude to resolving problems and delivering results

  • You are able to work with consultants, developers, PMs, customers, partners, and support to successfully gather information required to understand the problems our users are facing and the ways our products help to solve them -You think and work independently, but operate as part of a team

Qualifications

Your Experience

  • BA/BS or equivalent experience required

  • Knowledge of network and cloud security platforms

  • Minimum 3 years of proven technical writing experience -For example, you have created documentation templates, best practices/configuration guides, that enable customer success

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to ask the right questions

  • Superb interpersonal skills, verbal and written

  • Strong initiative and ability to work independently and as part of a team, Work under pressure, and maintain focus

  • Ability to learn new technologies in a short time to find out not only how something works, but also when and why to use a configuration/setting

  • Prior experience supporting professional services organization preferred

  • Experienced with Microsoft Word and GSuite applications (Google Docs)
