As Senior Backend Engineer, you’ll: 

  • Architect, design, and implement scalable multi-tenant backend services and APIs.
  • Work on technologies such as Node.js, Javascript/Typescript, MongoDB, GraphQL, Apollo, Amazon Web Services EC2, S3, Lambdas, Kafka, and more.
  • Demonstrable solid experience and deep expertise in multiple technical domains.
  • Contribute to building and executing on functional strategy.
  • Lead projects that directly contribute to team and engineering organization's deliverables.
  • Produce and elevate the quality of maintainable, tested, performant, and scalable code.
  • Author, collaborate on, and evaluate design documents.
  • Influence technical designs and team-level prioritization as well as participate in technical solutions.
  • Collaborate product managers and designers in an autonomous, supportive team environment.
  • Mentor junior engineering in technical skills and Webflow culture.

About you 

You’ll thrive in this role if you:

  • Have 5+ years developing and deploying web applications, with a proven track record of shipping code.
  • Are familiar with Node.js and TypeScript and can write scalable services and APIs using Express.js, GraphQL, Apollo, and MongoDB.
  • Can debug production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack.
  • Proven experience building complex web systems that include multiple users and roles working concurrently. Experience creating test harnesses, load/scalability testing, regression testing with multiple users, and creating metrics to validate correct functionality.
  • Experience with testing frameworks (e.g. Jest, Mocha, Playwright, Cypress, K6).  Can discuss testing strategies, tools, frameworks, and metrics.

As a Tanium Software Engineer II focused on Cloud technologies, you will build and maintain best-of-breed products and infrastructure as part of a nimble development team. Tanium focuses on a customer engagement model and feedback process to ensure our products are designed the right way from the beginning. When new product ideas are identified, our software engineers design, develop, test, and deploy the products and supporting services from the ground up, while iterating with product management and customers for feedback and input.

What you’ll do

  • Build and maintain Tanium's cloud products and services as part of an agile development team
  • Implement intuitive front ends for customer-facing and internal applications
  • Build backend microservices with well-defined API’s
  • Work with persistent data stores, caches, messages buses, and other server-side technology
  • Create automated unit tests, API tests, integration tests and ensure quality delivery
  • Author technical documents and artifacts for developed software
  • Be on periodic on-call for triage of critical alerts from detections and systems

We’re looking for someone with

  • Education
    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
    • CS Degree or related technical field preferred
  • Experience
    • Must be able to obtain FederalRAMP clearance at a minimum 
    • 2+ years industry experience
    • Experience building high-impact, high-performance, secure, scalable, observable, supportable, and maintainable backend services and APIs
    • Significant knowledge of at least one of the following: Golang or JavaScript/TypeScript (preferred), Node.js, Java, or Rust
    • Experience with AWS or other cloud platforms
    • Experience with modern software engineering development and automation tools like git and CI/CD pipelines
    • Experience with containers and microservices is a plus
    • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, Pulumi) a plus
    • Experience with container orchestration solutions (Kubernetes, Nomad, Mesos) a plus
    • Demonstrates sound judgment for balancing between rapid development, long-term code maintainability and supportability
    • Believes in the power of and the need for writing automated tests as part of development
    • Comfortable debugging yours and others’ code in production environments
    • Has knowledge of a variety of modern backend software frameworks and the versatility to learn new tools and languages

What you’ll get

The annual base salary range for this full-time position is $95,000 to $190,000. This range is an estimate for what Tanium will pay a new hire. About the Team

The Product Engineering organization is responsible for building, maintaining, and improving the end-user experiences that comprise our software platform. These experiences are full-stack solutions built atop a complex and robust data platform in order to support key security workflows for both third-party risk management and security self-assessment personas.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and visionary Director of Engineering to lead our Product Engineering team. The ideal candidate will have a deep technical background, strong leadership skills, and a proven track record of delivering high-quality software products. This role is crucial in driving the strategic direction and execution of our product engineering efforts, ensuring alignment with business objectives and customer needs.

This is a hybrid role that will require being on-site at least once a week in our Midtown New York office.

Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Strategy: Lead, mentor, and inspire a team of engineering managers and software engineers. Develop and execute the strategic vision for product engineering in alignment with company goals.
  • Product Development: Oversee the end-to-end product development lifecycle, from concept to delivery. Ensure that products are designed, built, and delivered with high quality, scalability, and reliability.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with Product Management, Design, and other stakeholders to define product requirements and roadmaps. Foster a collaborative environment to ensure seamless communication and coordination across teams.
  • Technical Excellence: Drive the adoption of best practices in software development, architecture, and processes. Promote a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence within the team.
  • Innovation: Encourage innovation and experimentation within the team to explore new technologies and approaches. Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies to ensure our products remain competitive.
  • Operational Efficiency: Optimize engineering processes and workflows to enhance productivity and efficiency. Implement metrics and KPIs to track performance and drive improvements.
  • Talent Management: Recruit, develop, and retain top engineering talent. Provide ongoing feedback, coaching, and support to foster professional growth and career advancement.
  • Budget Management: Manage the product engineering budget, including resource allocation and project expenses. Ensure financial accountability and optimize resource utilization.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: At least 12 years of experience in software engineering, with a minimum of 5 years in a leadership role managing other managers in large, distributed teams.
  • Technical Skills
    • Extensive experience with modern software development practices (e.g., Agile, DevOps) and proficiency with Node.js, TypeScript, JavaScript, React, Scala, and Spark.
    • Strong familiarity with distributed systems and large-scale data architectures.
  • Leadership: Proven ability to lead and inspire high-performing engineering teams. Demonstrated success in driving large-scale software projects from concept to delivery.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on delivering innovative and practical solutions.
  • Security Knowledge: Familiarity with cybersecurity principles and practices is highly desirable.

The estimated salary range for this position is $180,000-210,000. Actual compensation for the position is based on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to affordability, skills, qualifications and experience, and may vary from the range. In addition to base salary, employees may also be eligible for annual performance-based incentive compensation awards and equity, among other company benefits.
