  • $2,000 USD to build your personal workspace
  • $1,000 USD annual stipend for your continuous learning and growth
Technology

We have an API, a web dashboard, and a proliferation of mobile SDKs.

The API is Flask + PSQL, the web dashboard is a React app, and the mobile SDKs are written in whatever language the target platform is.

Our API has to deal with a massive amount of requests and there going to be many interesting scaling problems in the future for us.

On the mobile SDK side, it is a great challenge in providing sane and native-feeling SDKs to many platforms. A great opportunity for a polyglot who cares about developer experience.

The Product Design team at O'Reilly focuses on delivering highly impactful outcomes for millions of enterprise learners, teachers, creators, and content partners at all touchpoints across the learning journey. We're a cross-disciplinary group of thinkers and doers driven by a vision to work on stuff that matters and create more value than we capture.

Join our mission to change the world by spreading the knowledge of innovators—through design.

About the Role

We're looking for an experienced Sr. Product Designer to join our growing team to help define the future of "search and discovery" on the O'Reilly learning platform. In this role, you'll work across multiple levels of design—from IA to structure to the surface—creating product experiences that meet the needs of our Individual and Enterprise end-users and Administrators.

As a Product Designer in CORE, you'll iterate and expand upon the latest direction we're taking with a new NLP-powered semantic search engine and its relationship with O'Reilly's Topic Graph. You'll look at the overall patterns of content discovery on the platform and work with teams to define a universal information architecture system to adopt. Plus, you'll help refine the existing O'Reilly Beta experience for customers and internal users.

You'll have the opportunity to own new features and reimagine existing ones while brainstorming and sharing your ideas with cross-functional teams. You'll also collaborate with other designers and product managers on the CORE team centered on Search, Discovery, and Accounts to ensure a cohesive platform journey for all users.

This role reports to the Product Design Manager of the CORE design team.

You will

  • Work in a fast-paced environment with a cross-functional group of product and project managers, engineers, data scientists, and product marketers to understand why (and how) our customers search and discover content to help shape solutions they need to achieve their goals.
  • Work closely with our third-party technology partner to integrate their rapidly changing APIs
  • Create and communicate user-centered design solutions—at all fidelities—to teammates and stakeholders, using storyboards, flows, wireframes, mockups, and prototypes
  • Work closely with front-end engineers to implement page layouts using our design system or to create bespoke components—to ensure features launch at the highest quality bar
  • Create simple, intuitive product experiences and workflows—inside and outside of the primary search experience—in the realm of data science, machine learning, and API services
  • Iterate and improve global and utility navigation patterns across the product
  • Advocate and perform user research—both qualitative and quantitative—to help identify user motivation and needs and to validate solution ideas
  • Partner with product managers and engineers to frame problems and iteratively design, ship, and measure solutions together using a user-centered design approach
  • Mentor more junior designers and contribute to the greater good of the design team

Let's talk if you have

(Minimum requirements)

  • 6+ years of real-world product design experience, Enterprise SaaS or E-Learning preferred
  • A portfolio showcasing modern work you have shipped that portrays a balance of process, aesthetics, usability, and outcomes met
  • Experience working with research and data to drive decision making
  • Experience with information architecture in a data-rich environment
  • Experience working directly with stakeholders to drive consensus and mine for value
  • Effectiveness in working across organizational boundaries to define, manage, and prioritize work
  • Proven experience applying UX best practices in responsive web applications
  • Excellent communication skills (storytelling, speaking, writing, presenting), and consider yourself a continuous learner
  • Highly proficient in working and prototyping with Figma
  • Worked with and contributed to a shared, component-based design system
  • A positive attitude and want to do the best work of your life

Bonus Points

  • Experience designing for global search in a data-intense product
  • Experience designing for information-rich sites and apps
  • Experience working with modern technologies such as machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP)

OpenPhone is hiring a Remote Product Designer

Product Designer at OpenPhone (S18)
The new phone for business.
San Francisco, Remote / Remote
Full-time
About OpenPhone

OpenPhone is on the mission to build the world's best calling and messaging app for professionals and businesses. With over 10,000 paying customers already, we are aiming to be the #1 communications app for the 130 million professionals in North America.

Our founders are previous engineers and product managers at companies that have built software for over half a million businesses. We are backed by the industry’s best venture firms including Y Combinator, Slow Ventures, and Garage Capital, with an amazing list of advisors from Asana, Facebook, Google, and more.

About the role

For over a decade, business phones have stagnated in functionality and user experience, while the rest of the software ecosystem has continued to evolve rapidly. Often these phone solutions are built around a legacy view of how the phone works, or how people communicate.

OpenPhone is taking advantage of this unique opportunity to bring the business phone out of the stone age, and redefine what a phone can do with a fresh perspective. Our mission is simple — to build the world’s most collaborative and integrated business phone.

It's a particularly special time to join OpenPhone. We just announced our $40M Series B funding round, led by Tiger Global, with participation from a group of incredible angel investors, and even some OpenPhone customers!

As part of this next stage of our company, we're looking for versatile and passionate Product Designers in search of their next challenge. As an early member of our small but mighty design team, you'll have the ability to make a big impact in the way we delight our customers through beautiful product experiences.

Some of the things you’ll do

  • Tackle a broad range of projects, from inception to completion, across our desktop and mobile apps.
  • Prototype and test out concepts to help validate hypotheses and arrive at the best outcome.
  • Sweat the details in everything you design with pixel perfection, leaving nothing up to ambiguity.
  • Communicate features and UX flows to the engineering team to ensure a smooth handover.
  • Create beautiful product experiences that truly delight our customers and help them grow their businesses.
  • Help support and evolve our design systems, component libraries, and product guidelines.
  • Roll up your sleeves and get involved, collaborate with the rest of the team, and help us deliver something truly special!

About you

  • You have 5+ years of professional design experience, including strong fundamentals across product design, user experience, and visual design.
  • You understand the importance of keeping things simple and ensuring nothing gets in the way of the core product experience.
  • You’re passionate about what you do, and are dedicated to delivering the highest level of quality in everything you create.
  • You're able to stay on top of current design trends and best practices, but also know when to venture off and break the mould.
  • You have a flawless attention to detail. Mention the word zesty in your application.
  • You're a self-starter and excellent communicator, able to thrive in a fast-paced, remote working environment.
  • You can be scrappy and versatile when needed, able to wear many hats and work outside of your comfort zone.
  • Bonus points if you have motion design or copywriting skills!

We understand that there's no such thing as a perfect candidate. Above all else, we're looking for people who are passionate and determined, and who are excited to face the challenges of a rapidly growing startup. OpenPhone is a place where you can grow exponentially, and we encourage you to apply to us even if you don't 100% match the exact candidate description.

About OpenPhone

OpenPhone is a new type of business phone. Our mission is to help people communicate better and be more productive.

We’re backed by Y Combinator and the best venture firms including Tiger Global, Craft Ventures, Slow Ventures, Kindred Ventures, and others. We're serving thousands of businesses around the world and growing quickly. We take a lot of pride in providing an exceptional customer experience and a product people love. Our customers rated us #1 on all possible categories on G2 Crowd.
