A Bit About You

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in DevOps, SRE, or information security, preferably in the healthcare or online services industry.
  • Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., Ruby, Go) and software development processes.
  • Hands-on experience with one or more cloud providers (we use AWS)
  • Experience utilizing Infrastructure as Code tools to manage cloud infrastructure (we use Terraform)
  • Experience with CI/CD platforms (we use Github Actions and Concourse)

Preferred Qualifications:

Overview: We are seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer with specialized expertise in Azure to seamlessly integrate into our 3rd line support team. The role involves spearheading the technical implementation of forthcoming business groups onto the CP Platform, followed by facilitating the upskilling of the newly formed 3rd line Platform team. The incumbent will oversee a smooth handover of activities and exit upon the conclusion of the engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provide senior-level guidance and leadership to 3rd line DevOps engineering colleagues, acting as a self-starter in the team.
  2. Perform advanced troubleshooting and recovery activities on the CP platform, collaborating closely with supporting teams for issue resolution.
  3. Foster integration with internal teams, current suppliers, and support models, ensuring cohesive operations.
  4. Actively support the expansion and rollout of future initiatives, particularly in platform-related activities.
  5. Contribute to the upskilling of associate DevOps Engineers through project and support-related activities.

Technical Requirements:

Git and Gitlab CI/CD:

  • Proficiency in Git, Gitlab CI/CD Pipelines, including YAML syntax, stages and jobs, runners, artifacts, caching, and integrating testing tools like PyTest and Selenium.
  • Experience in managing environment variables, secret management, debugging pipelines, and utilizing the Gitlab API.

Azure Cloud Services / Azure DevOps:

  • In-depth knowledge of Azure services, encompassing Azure Resource Manager, Az CLI, Azure VM creation and management, networking, security, databases, Azure Cache for Redis, Azure Storage, and monitoring/logging practices.

Terraform:

  • Proficiency in Terraform, specifically in Infrastructure as Code (IaC) concepts, state management, resource management, module usage, Terraform CLI syntax, cloud providers, security, and approval planning.

Additional Skills:

  • Proficiency in Docker, Linux Administration (RHEL, Alpine), Shell and Python scripting, Kubernetes, kubectl cli functions, Prometheus, and Grafana.

Many of Cloudflare’s critical internal services run on Kubernetes.   • Improve Kubernetes, Ceph and Prometheus automation, configuration management and other tooling

  • Harden the platform against security threats and resource contention issues
  • Improve our GitOps systems and practices

What You'll Need

  • Experience managing production Kubernetes or similar orchestration platforms
  • Recent experience with configuration management frameworks such as SaltStack or Ansible
  • Knowledge of how container runtimes work inside of Linux (isolation, storage, and networking)
  • Ability to work with codebases in Bash, TypeScript and Go
  • A firm grasp of IP networking including routing and iptables
  • Excellent debugging skills in a Linux environment
  • Source control experience including branching, merging and rebasing
  • The ability to break down complex problems into smaller pieces, provide options, talk through trade-offs and drive the effort to solve the problem

About Role

We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated engineer to join our team and contribute to our analytical database platform. The platform is a critical component of Cloudflare Analytics which provides real-time visibility into the health and performance of Cloudflare customers' online properties.

The team builds and maintains a high-performance, scalable database platform powered by ClickHouse, optimized for analytical workloads. We help our customers, both internal and external, to gain a deeper understanding of their online properties, identify trends and patterns, and make informed decisions about how to optimize their web performance, security, and other key metrics. Our mission is to empower customers to leverage their data to drive better outcomes for their business.

As a Distributed systems engineer - Analytical Database Platform, you will:

  • Develop and implement new platform components for the Cloudflare Analytical Database Platform to improve functionality and performance.

  • Add more database clusters to accommodate the growing volume of data generated by Cloudflare products and services.

  • Monitor and maintain the performance and reliability of existing database platform clusters, and identify and troubleshoot any issues that may arise.

  • Work to identify and remove bottlenecks within the analytics database platform, including optimizing query performance and streamlining data ingestion processes.

  • Collaborate with the ClickHouse open-source community to add new features and functionality to the database, as well as contribute to the development of the upstream codebase.

  • Collaborate with other teams across Cloudflare to understand their data needs and build solutions that empower them to make data-driven decisions.

  • Participate in the development of the next generation of the database platform engine, including researching and evaluating new technologies and approaches that can improve the database's performance and scalability.

Key qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience working in software development covering distributed systems, and databases.

  • Strong programming skills (C++ is preferable), as well as a deep understanding of software development best practices and principles.

  • Strong knowledge of SQL and database internals, including experience with database design, optimization, and performance tuning.

  • A solid foundation in computer science, including algorithms, data structures, distributed systems, and concurrency.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, as well as communicate effectively with other teams across Cloudflare.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work independently and proactively identify and solve issues.

  • Experience with ClickHouse is a plus.
