About the team

The HR Apps team helps small business owners grow and manage thriving teams. It’s a newly-formed product area that will grow into two engineering/product/design pods over the coming months. Some of the features this team owns:

  • Applicant tracking: help employers post open jobs, manage candidates and interviews, and hire compliantly
  • Learning management: deliver guided learning to meet compliance requirements and grow team members’ skills.
  • Performance management: gather peer and manager feedback, manage performance reviews, and set development goals.

About the opportunity

We’re looking for a product-oriented IC design leader to join our new HR Apps team. This designer will ship products that help small business owners hire, manage, retain, and celebrate their team members. You’ll be the design representative in this product area’s cross-functional leadership team. You’ll work with your PM, engineering, and data peers to establish strategy, roadmap, and UX vision. You’ll collaborate with another senior design IC on your team to ship project-level work.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Work with your cross-functional partners to define a long-term UX vision for your product area and how it fits into Gusto’s broader vision
  • Co-lead the definition of product strategy, roadmap, team OKRs, and project direction
  • Build our collective understanding of customers’ HR needs through research and data
  • Design and ship both net-new and iterative projects that deliver consistent value to our customers
  • Contribute to Gusto’s product design leadership community by sharing your skills and experience
  • Champion our design system and platform standards, and help evolve them through your product work
  • This role has the potential to grow into a player/coach people management role over time, depending on the goals of the successful candidate

  • Breadth of impact: This role will be one of Gusto’s most senior IC design leaders. You should have demonstrated experience leading design direction across multiple teams, and influencing design/product across multiple product areas.

At Gusto, we strive to provide rewards that empower employees to achieve their financial and personal goals. We offer competitive compensation packages with a strong emphasis on equity based compensation (ownership in Gusto). Our cash compensation range for this role is $152,000/yr to $232,000/yr in Denver & most remote locations, and $185,000/yr to $251,000/yr in San Francisco & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed above.


Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 daysper week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas. 

When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required.

Gusto Embedded Payroll Platform is the newest major business segment within Gusto.   • Masters Degree in Computer Science, a related field, or comparable work experience

  • 15+ years experience in software engineering, Test Driven Development, Design principles and Distributed Architectures.

  • Expertise in Identity and Access Management at large global scale for SaaS enterprise, including authentication, authorization, privacy and consent management, regulatory compliance, multi-factor authentication, federation, and risk management.

  • Proficiency in authentication standards, frameworks, lifecycle management, tokens, session management and profiles, federation technologies (SAML, OAUTH, OpenID Connect) as well as customer identity and access management platforms like Okta, Auth0, Ping Identity.

  • Proficiency with authorization standards such as RBAC, JWT, MFA, ABAC, but most specifically FGA (Fine Grained Authorization) utilizing Zanzibar. 

  • Effective communication skills to influence key stakeholders across the enterprise, at all levels of the organization and promote a culture of engineering excellence and being well-managed, using opportunities to reuse and innersource solutions where possible.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence and drive change within the organization, promoting innovation and continuous improvement

  • Being comfortable with the overall responsibility and accountability to create, and maintain a technical strategy and execution plan

  • Driven operational transformation through automation and continuous process improvements

Job Description

We’re looking for a Staff Data Engineer to join Procore’s Data Division. In this role, you’ll help build Procore’s next-generation construction data platform for others to build upon including Procore developers, analysts, partners, and customers. 

As a Staff Data Engineer, you’ll partner with other engineers and product managers across Product & Technology to develop data platform capabilities that enable the movement, transformation, and retrieval of data for use in analytics, machine learning, and service integration. To be successful in this role, you’re passionate about distributed systems including storage, streaming, and batch data processing technologies on the cloud, with a strong bias for action and outcomes. If you’re a seasoned data engineer comfortable and excited about building our next-generation data platform and translating problems into pragmatic solutions that open up the boundaries of technical possibilities—we’d love to hear from you!

This is a full-time position and will report to our Senior Manager of Software Engineering and will be based in the India office, but employees can choose to work remotely. We are looking for someone to join our team immediately.

What you’ll do: 

  • Participate in the design and implementation of our next-generation data platform for the construction industry
  • Define and implement operational and dimensional data models and transformation pipelines to support reporting and analytics
  • Actively participate with our engineering team in all phases of the software development lifecycle, including requirements gathering, functional and technical design, development, testing and roll-out, and support
  • Understand our current data models and infrastructure, proactively identify areas for improvement, and prescribe architectural recommendations with a focus on performance and accessibility. 
  • Work alongside our Product, UX, and IT teams, leveraging your expertise in the data space to influence our product roadmap, developing innovative solutions that add additional value to our platform
  • Help uplevel teammates by conducting code reviews, providing mentorship, pairing, and training opportunities
  • Stay up to date with the latest data technology trends

What we’re looking for: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field is preferred, or comparable work experience 
  • 8+ years of experience building and operating cloud-based, highly available, and scalable data platforms and pipelines supporting vast amounts of data for reporting and analytics
  • 2+ years of experience building data warehouses in Snowflake or Redshift
  • Hands-on experience with MPP query engines like Snowflake, Presto, Dremio, and Spark SQL
  • Expertise in relational, dimensional data modeling.
  • Understanding of data access patterns, streaming technology, data validation, performance optimization, and cost optimization
  • Strength in commonly used data technologies and languages such as Python, Java or Scala, Kafka, Spark, Flink, Airflow, Kubernetes, or similar
  • Strong passion for learning, always open to new technologies and ideas
