RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Data Engineer, you will:

  • Collaborate closely with operations, IT and vendor partners to understand the data landscape and contribute to the vision, development and implementation of the Data Warehouse solution.
  • Recommend technologies and tools to support the future state architecture.
  • Develop standards, processes and procedures that align with best practices in data governance and data management.
  • Be responsible for logical and physical data modeling, load and query performance.
  • Develop new secure data feeds with external parties as well as internal applications.
  • Perform regular analysis and QA, diagnose ETL and database related issues, perform root cause analysis, and recommend corrective actions to management.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to support the design, development, implementation, monitoring, and maintenance of new ETL programs.

Success in this role looks like:

  • First 90 days:
    • Develop a strong understanding of our existing data ecosystem and data pipelines.
    • Build relationships with various stakeholder departments to understand their day to day operation and their usage and need of Data Eng products.
    • Contribute in the design and implementation of new ETL programs to support the growth and operation efficiency of Clover.
    • Perform root cause analysis after issues have been identified and propose solutions for both short term and long term fixture to increase the stability and accuracy of our pipelines.
  • First 6 months:
    • Provide feedback and propose opportunities for improvement on current data engineering processes and procedures.
    • Work with platform engineers on improving data ecosystem stability, data quality monitoring and data governance.
    • Lead discussion with key stakeholders, propose, design and implement new data eng projects that solve critical business problems.
  • How will success be measured in the future?
    • Continue the creation and management of ETL program and data assets.
    • Be the technical Data Eng lead of our data squad’s day to day operation.
    • Guide and mentor other junior members of the team.

About the Role - In this role, you will partner closely with Catalog Product, ML, and Engineering and play a critical role in driving the “how” and execution of how we tackle Catalog goals on creating, scaling, and maintaining the accuracy of new catalog attributes (e.g. gluten-free) that are used to power experiences on the app (e.g. search filters, badges, ML models). This includes enabling our ML model pipelines used to generate data at scale through building LLM prompts, creating ground truth datasets, and evaluating the performance of ML models. You will use SQL to pull and analyze data in your day-to-day work. You will also be responsible for managing 3rd party vendors that provide catalog product data that is surfaced to customers. 

 

About the Team -The Enrichment Operations team sits within the Catalog Engineering organization. We partner with Catalog Product, Engineering, Data Science, and Machine Learning (ML) to create and measure the quality of new catalog data/attributes that are used to power customer experiences in all Instacart products (e.g., Marketplace, Caper, Storefront Pro). The catalog/product data are the foundation upon which customer experiences are built.

 

About the Job 

AI Enablement (40%)

    • Scale attribute data generation using ML. Collaborate with ML on attribute ML models and human-in-the-loop methodologies. You are responsible for building ground truth datasets, advising ML on what input data should be used, and building LLM prompts. You will also develop sourcing strategies on the best way to generate data for new attributes to power customer experiences. This requires thinking from both a technical/data point of view while also understanding how data should be presented to a customer on the app.
    • Evaluate model outputs (including criteria to decide on accuracy of outputs) to provide feedback to the ML team to improve models. This may involve reviewing and leading work from QA team members.

Driving Cross-Functional Projects (40%)

    • Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Data Science, and ML to execute on projects that roll up to catalog OKRs (e.g., increase attribute coverage).
    • Independently lead key projects and manage against catalog OKRs. This involves collaborating and aligning with a cross-functional team of technical and non-technical stakeholders to achieve the goals of a project within a defined timeframe. 

Analytics and Vendor Management (20%)

    • Manage relationships and data pipelines with 3rd party vendors and data providers that provide catalog data to Instacart. Use SQL to analyze data and present data-driven business recommendations. 

 

About You

Minimum Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of working experience in roles that involved project management, project delivery, stakeholder management, strategy and operations, and/or data analysis/analytics.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, commerce, economics, IT management, or related field.
  • Experience leading cross-functional projects end-to-end, with strong communication and stakeholder management skills. Experience working closely with Product, Engineering, ML, and DS teams preferred. Proven track record of strong ownership and bias to action to drive key business results.
  • Ability to blend business acumen with technical understanding to drive operational strategy and execution.
  • Intermediate knowledge in Excel, Google Sheets, and SQL. Experience using analytical skills to pull, analyze, and make data-driven business decisions.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with databases that contain large volumes of structured and unstructured data. Working knowledge of APIs and data integrations.
  • Experience working at an e-commerce, retail, or technology company.
  • Experience crafting LLM prompts.
