Khan AcademyMountain View, CA / Remote friendly (US + Canada Only)

Khan Academy is hiring a Remote Production Designer (3-month contract, $42/hour, 40 hours/week)

ABOUT KHAN ACADEMY

Khan Academy is a nonprofit with the mission to deliver a free, world-class education to anyone, anywhere. Our proven learning platform offers free, high-quality supplemental learning content and practice that cover Pre-K - 12th grade and early college core academic subjects, focusing on math and science. We have over 155 million registered learners globally and are committed to improving learning outcomes for students worldwide, focusing on learners in historically under-resourced communities.

OUR COMMUNITY

Our students, teachers, and parents come from all walks of life, and so do we. Our team includes people from academia, traditional/non-traditional education, big tech companies, and tiny startups. We hire great people from diverse backgrounds and experiences because it makes our company stronger. We value diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging as necessary to achieve our mission and impact the communities we serve. We know that transforming education starts in-house with learning about ourselves and our colleagues. We strive to be world-class in investing in our people and commit to developing you as a professional.

THE ROLE

Imagine being a teacher in Sarasota, Florida, four years after the pandemic started, with a classroom full of 6th graders who haven’t had a normal year of school or learning since 2019. It’s the reality of so many educators and students who use Khan Academy – and our team is uniquely positioned to help them when they need it most.

Khan Academy helps 500+ public school districts and schools across the country, supported primarily by philanthropy and individual donations. Our learning resources are free and available internationally in 50+ languages and used in 190+ countries.

We’re looking for a Production Designer to join our Brand team. The heart of this role is taking creative briefs and art direction and delivering visual design assets to support our Philanthropy, Marketing, Districts, Khan Academy Kids, and International teams. This position will be 40 hours per week for 3 months for $42/hr.

Some of the things you will work on:

  • Our 2023-24 annual report microsite.
  • Fundraising campaigns for community and individual giving.
  • Marketing and sales assets for the Khan Academy Districts sales cycle.
  • Digital illustrations and assets for marketing campaigns.
  • Visual aids, diagrams, and presentations for donor meetings.

You will play a vital role on an inclusive, collaborative, small but mighty Design team, helping us fulfill the mission of the organization: to provide a free, world-class education to anyone, anywhere. We genuinely care about people and value compassion in our everyday interactions. You’ll be able to be yourself, feel valued, supported, learn and grow, no matter how experienced you are.

If you’re looking for the opportunity to support something positive for humanity through your visual design skill set, we'd love to hear from you. Even if you don’t check every box (no one does), we encourage you to apply!

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Create visual assets based on initial ideas and a creative brief for a wide variety of campaigns and initiatives.
  • Deliver outstanding designs that are compelling, emotionally rich, and age/audience appropriate.
  • Assist other team members with production deliverables for projects they’re leading.
  • Actively participate in critique by giving and receiving constructive feedback.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • 3+ years of relevant experience with an agency, global brand, or growth-stage tech company.
  • Outstanding digital and print design skills, with an obsession for cohesive brand identity, market trends, and best practices.
  • Confident designing in Webflow, Adobe CC, and Figma.
  • Able to create custom illustrations and animations that follow brand guidelines (show us in your portfolio).
  • Experience designing for a wide array of audiences, including school-age children, teenagers, young adults, and adults.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Comfortable in ambiguous situations and dynamic environments that run similar to a startup.
  • Desire to learn by working shoulder-to-shoulder with outstanding senior designers, develop your storytelling and customer service skills.
  • Motivated by the Khan Academy mission “to provide a free world-class education for anyone, anywhere."
  • Proven cross-cultural competency skills demonstrating self-awareness, awareness of other, and the ability to adopt inclusive perspectives, attitudes, and behaviors to drive inclusion and belonging throughout the organization.

Qualities we value in ourselves, and those who join our team:

  • Introspective, mature, and emotionally intelligent.
  • Invested in your own growth and the growth of our Design team.
  • Proactively seek out the people/information you need to move work forward and unblock yourself.
  • Able to balance the immediate tactical needs of helping deliver results with scouting ahead for what’s next.
  • Willing to roll your sleeves up and pitch in when a project goes off-script.
  • Passionate about education and designing engaging experiences for our audiences, deeply curious about how and why people learn.
  • Huge bonus if you’ve worked in a K-12 classroom before.

NOTE: Submitting a portfolio with your application is required. We're looking for a portfolio that highlights your taste and talent with visual design, relevant to the job description. Applications without a portfolio link or attachment (plus password if required) will not be considered.

ABOUT KHAN ACADEMY

Khan Academy is a nonprofit with the mission to deliver a free, world-class education to anyone anywhere. Our proven learning platform offers free, high-quality supplemental learning resources that cover Pre-K - 12th grade and early college core academic subjects, with a focus on math and science.  We have over 155 million registered learners globally and are committed to improving learning outcomes for students around the world, with a focus on learners in historically under-resourced communities.

OUR COMMUNITY

Our students, teachers, and parents come from all walks of life, and so do we.  Our team includes people from academia, traditional/non-traditional education, big tech companies, and tiny startups. We strive to be world-class in investing in our people and commit to developing you as a professional.

THE ROLE

We’re a small team with big dreams and we’re only just getting started. We have some of the richest educational data in the world, and we want to leverage that data to develop a clearer picture of who our users are, how they are using the site, and how we could better serve them on their educational journey. Your work will enable answering critical and meaningful questions like "how do students learn most effectively?" and "how can we improve our content and product?".

The Sr. Analytics Engineer will strengthen our capabilities to enable the organization to use data to inform our decisions. You’ll have ownership of our enterprise data model and the core data pipelines that power our top line metrics and critical analyses.

The Sr. Analytics Engineer is someone who enjoys tidying and documenting data and then delighting in the company’s well-organized EDW. You favor writing SQL to transform raw data into the data models to service your customers, the Analytics and Research teams, to empower them to generate actionable insights for stakeholders. You’ll work on projects that improve the quality and reliability of our existing data, and you’ll also enable entire new areas of the organization with new core data sources. And you adopt software engineering best practices to produce high quality data solutions.

What you’ll do:

  • Systematically build out our enterprise data model and warehouse:
    • Design, build, and productionize our ever-improving suite of core pipelines and data tables to enable standardized reporting and analysis.
    • Collaborate with engineers on the infrastructure team to improve our data technology stack (logging, instrumentation, ETL, security). You may also pitch in to help them bring new data into our warehouse.
    • Partner with analytics team members, the research team, and the broader product and business teams to design and standardize business rules and metric definitions.
    • Implement EDW standards and robust monitoring/QA processes to ensure we continue to improve the quality and reliability of our data.
  • Empower every team with data:
    • Identify, pilot, and deploy whichever tools, datasets, and processes are best suited to increase access to and data use across Khan Academy to empower data-driven decision-making.
    • In addition to supporting members of the Data Insights Group, work with the product, content, philanthropy, marketing teams, and others to bring data to their fingertips, ideally with solutions that allow them to self-serve with our Looker implementation.
    • You will also build infrastructural data solutions to facilitate reporting to external partners and will ensure the highest standards of data accuracy, reliability, and security
  • Help instill a ‘data driven’/’data informed’ culture:
    • Shepherd our Metrics and Data Documentation wiki
    • Train team members on data skills and tooling

WHAT YOU BRING:

  • 6+ years experience in analytics/data engineering or data warehousing; or in a business intelligence field with a strong emphasis on data modeling and pipeline work. Preference for experience in a consumer-facing internet business or edtech setting.
  • Advanced SQL skills (window functions, creating UDFs,  DML/DDL commands, etc.)
  • Proficiency in writing and maintaining data pipelines and data quality monitors in a workflow management tool for productionized solutions, with source control and code review.
  • Proficiency in computer science and software engineering fundamentals, including at least one scripting language (e.g., Python)
  • Experience across the entire data lifecycle: instrumentation, logging, data modeling, ETL, Business Intelligence, and visualization tools.

PERKS AND BENEFITS

We may be a non-profit, but we reward our talented team extremely well!

Khan Academy is hiring a Remote Staff Product Designer, Accessibility

We have no end of fascinating challenges that can only be solved with a deep empathy for our users, diligent product & UX thinking, and a strong drive to make a positive impact. Some questions we’re working on answering right now are:

  • How do we support teachers who are dealing with the impact that the pandemic had on learning?
  • How do we help students with learning gaps catch up to their grade level?
  • How do we center schools serving historically under-resourced communities in our product design and development?
  • How do we reach more school districts so our learning experience gets used in more classrooms?
  • …and more

The best part? Our work really matters: catch Sal talking to CNBC about low math and reading test scores.

We’re looking for an Accessibility Design Lead to embed within our Learning Components team, the home of some of our most resourced and empowered accessibility experts in the organization. The heart of this role is helping us achieve a truly accessible, AA-compliant product experience for users of all abilities, starting with the most fundamental technical components of our learning content.

You will also drive accessibility improvements to the platform UX across the product organization in partnership with our Accessibility Designer for Assessments. Ultimately, we want your help creating a living document that states our level of a11y compliance across the whole platform.

Some of the things you will work on:

  • Immediate accessibility improvements for our highest-priority learning components needed for Assessments.
  • Developing an accessibility roadmap to comply with state standards.
  • Bake accessibility into product design and development.
  • Educating the product org on accessibility best practices.

If you’re looking for the opportunity to make learning accessible and ship high-quality products that solve real problems for learners and educators, we'd love to hear from you. Even if you don’t check every box (no one does), we encourage you to apply!

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Design and deliver accessible, AA-compliant product improvements and new features, with an incredible attention to detail.
  • Drive high-impact accessibility initiatives and cross-team alignment in partnership with Design, Product, Engineering, Community Support, and Legal.
  • Communicate accessibility goals and priorities that are aligned to company objectives and generate buy-in across the product org.
  • Document and roll out a11y processes at scale, including for design systems, in collaboration with your Product, Design, and Engineering partners.
  • Actively participate in our Accessibility Guild, sharing knowledge and best practices.
  • Play an active role in how we create accessible experiences as a Design team, including participating in team critiques.
  • Act as a strategic thought partner/consultant across the organization on accessibility questions, as time and priorities allow.
  • Write about, present, and share what you have learned, both internally and with the wider Design community via our blog and industry events.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • 8+ years of experience as a product/UX designer.
  • 2+ years of experience in an accessibility design role.
  • Outstanding in interaction design, prototyping and information architecture, with visual design chops and close attention to all the details.
  • Expert-level understanding of WCAG 2.1 AA and how to apply it to web apps across mobile and desktop.
  • Proven record of successfully leading a11y efforts through all phases of development, with large-scale projects involving multiple cross-functional teams.
  • Experience creating documentation and deliverables for accessibility initiatives at scale (roadmaps, project plans, playbooks, communications).
  • Patience and the ability to balance sprints and marathons: you know how to simultaneously move quickly with a bias for action, and advance steadily towards long-term, org-wide change.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Comfortable in ambiguous situations and dynamic environments that run similar to a startup.
  • Eager to learn a lot about generative AI-driven products and how to make them accessible.
  • Prior experience with educational products or designing for content-forward experiences is a plus.

Qualities we value in ourselves, and those who join our team:

  • Introspective, mature, and emotionally intelligent.
  • Invested in your own growth and the growth of our Design team.
  • Proactively seek out the people/information you need to move work forward and unblock yourself.
  • High comfort level working within a strong product and pedagogical vision from our CEO Sal Khan and our Chief Learning Officer, Kristen DiCerbo, PhD.
  • Able to balance the immediate tactical needs of helping deliver and ship features with scouting ahead for what’s next.
  • Willing to roll your sleeves up and pitch in when a project goes off-script.
  • Passionate about education and designing engaging learning experiences, deeply curious about how and why people learn.
  • Huge bonus if you’ve worked in a K-12 classroom before.

NOTE: Submitting a portfolio with your application is required. We're looking for a portfolio that demonstrates exceptional, accessible design solutions that are aligned to business objectives within tight timeframes and constraints.

Khan Academy is hiring a Remote Senior Product Designer, Growth

Our work matters: catch Sal talking to CNBC about low math and reading test scores.

We are looking for a Senior Product Designer to embed within our Product Growth team and help us scale product adoption among users. The heart of this role is identifying opportunities to improve the user journey from acquisition to engagement, and designing experiences and features that contribute to the success of our products. You will help drive sign up conversion and ensure that new users find it easy and rewarding to use Khan Academy and Khanmigo regularly.

Some of the projects you will work on:

  • Experimenting with different conversion strategies for core Khan Academy.
  • Experimenting with different conversion strategies and growth loops for Khanmigo.
  • Improving time-to-value for new Khanmigo signups.
  • Supporting scaling into new international markets.

You will play a vital role on an inclusive, collaborative, small but mighty Design team, helping us fulfill the mission of the organization: to provide a free, world-class education to anyone, anywhere. Design has a seat on the Product Leadership Team, making Design a keystone in the way we “deliver wow” (one of our values), and means that you’ll never have to justify the importance of your work or why you should be included.

We genuinely care about people and value compassion in our everyday interactions. You’ll be able to be yourself, feel valued, supported, learn and grow, no matter how experienced you are. Even if you don’t check every box (no one does), we encourage you to apply.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Drive the end-to-end design strategy and execution for Product Growth projects, from early concepts to polished user experiences.
  • Deliver design solutions that balance the company’s mission, a seamless branded experience for end users, and ease of implementation.
  • Autonomously move your own work forward in partnership with PM and Eng, using proactive communication and effective planning strategies.
  • Cultivate a growth mindset (another one of our values) by soliciting feedback on solutions from internal stakeholders, senior leadership, and the Design team during critiques.
  • Seek out, understand, incorporate and communicate user feedback throughout the design process, in partnership with UX Research and Data.
  • Build alignment across diverse teams by successfully presenting ideas to a range of teams and stakeholders across Khan Academy.
  • Write about, present, and share what you have learned, both internally and with the wider Design community via our blog and industry events.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • 5+ years of experience as a product/UX designer.
  • 3+ years of experience designing on product-led growth teams.
  • Comfortable building experiences with Webflow  and Figma (show us in your portfolio).
  • Strong across interaction design, prototyping, and information architecture, with a keen eye for visual design and experience using quant/qual to make data-informed decisions.
  • Track record of executing successful growth strategy through your design skill set, relationship building, and team alignment on desired outcomes.
  • Ability to juggle ambiguous and broad problems/opportunities along with smaller, well-defined projects.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills for diverse audiences with neurodivergent and neurotypical, technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Comfortable in ambiguous situations and dynamic environments that run similar to a startup, where you regularly interact with and gather feedback from Senior Leadership.
  • Scrappy, have a bias toward action, and can move quickly.
  • Lean approach to delivering design solutions and regularly ask yourself: how do we learn quickly and ship regularly? What’s the most concise experience we can deliver that still provides value?
  • Motivated by our company mission and a desire to tangibly improve the lives of millions by applying your talents.
  • Bonus if you have experience with freemium models.
  • Bonus if you have strong copywriting skills (show us in your portfolio) and a good sense of humor.

Qualities we value in ourselves, and those who join our team:

  • Introspective, mature, low-ego, and emotionally intelligent.
  • Invested in your own growth and the growth of our Design team colleagues.
  • Proactively seek out the people/information you need to move work forward and unblock yourself.
  • High comfort level working within a strong top-down product and pedagogical vision led by our CEO, Sal Khan, and our Chief Learning Officer, Kristen DiCerbo, PhD.

NOTE: Submitting a portfolio with your application is required. We're looking for a portfolio that highlights the parts of your background and experience that are relevant to the job description. Applications without a portfolio link or attachment (plus password if required) will not be considered.

Our US content team includes the curriculum developers who design the curriculum and develop the courses, lessons, videos, articles, and practice questions on Khan Academy.  Khan Academy’s Test Prep and Humanities courses reach millions of learners each year. In the years ahead, as we increase the depth and breadth of the courses we offer across grades K-14, we’ll be integrating AI into many of the learning experiences we build: our AI-powered tutor and teaching assistant, Khanmigo, is a critical component of the company’s strategic vision.

We’re looking for an innovative team leader responsible for coaching and developing our team of Test Prep and Humanities content creators (currently 3 people, with more contractors to join this year) and providing the support that allows them to do their best work. In this role, you’ll also be responsible for working with organizational leadership to set our short- and long-term strategic vision of Khan’s Test Prep and Humanities offerings, and then working with your direct reports and contractors to implement that vision—through clear definitions of project success, realistic project plans, and efficient processes.

Content is an integral part of Khan Academy’s overall product, so this role requires a collaborative and cross-functional mindset. By co-creating Test Prep and Humanities offerings alongside Product and Program Managers, Designers, Engineers, and Marketers, you’ll ensure Khan Academy launches cohesive offerings that are engaging and efficacious for our learners. Because we partner with a number of schools, foundations, and organizations, you’ll need to be relationship-driven and comfortable representing Khan Academy’s ELA, Humanities, and Test prep offerings to external audiences.

WHAT YOU BRING

Growth mindset

  • You have a true passion for education and a desire to change the world for the better.
  • You have an entrepreneurial mindset, including a high tolerance for ambiguity, a penchant for experimentation, and a bias towards action.
  • You’re kind, collaborative, and a team player; people love working with you.
  • You believe that generative AI holds the potential to elevate human intelligence and learning.

Strong execution

  • You’re a strong communicator, and you can deliver effective and inspiring feedback to direct reports on how to make great ideas and content even better.
  • You have a proven track record of independently driving complex projects end-to-end.
  • You’re adaptable to a fast-paced environment, and open to learning new tools and tech.
  • You understand instructional design, you have deep teacher and learner empathy, and you know how to ensure our learning experiences are user-friendly and pedagogically effective.  You have experience creating and solving problems for a variety of user personas for K-12 and beyond (eg, history teacher, reading student, different grade levels).
  • You’ve project managed processes and editorial workflows for content creation and publication, preferably in an online-first, education platform.

Background/experience

  • Bachelor’s degree + Master’s degree or equivalent (or higher).
  • You have an intuition for when the content in an area you’re less familiar with could benefit from more clarity, simplification, or research.
  • You have successfully coached and grown teams, including 2+ years direct management experience with teams of writers, teachers, or content creators, including data-driven evaluations.
  • 2+ years standards-aligned instructional and/or assessment design experience in ELA, Humanities, and/or Test Prep, combining disciplinary expertise, pedagogical research, learner empathy, balancing standards alignment with the realities of today’s classrooms.
  • 2+ years experience teaching at the K-12 or university level.
  • You have a history of working cross-functionally to achieve shared success in organization-wide goals and projects.

Strategic thinking

  • You have a strong understanding of the current landscape of ELA, Humanities, and/or Test Prep education in the US.
  • You have a strategic vision about where online education is headed in ELA, Humanities, and/or Test Prep.
  • You have experience using data to inform strategic decisions.

THE LEGAL TEAM

  • We're a small and mighty team passionate about the intersection of Education Tech (EdTech), responsible tech for good, privacy, and regulations - and invite you to join us as our team member
  • We joined Khan Academy for the same reason that many of our teammates did: to advance our mission, centered on helping our learners and their families, tutors, teachers, and schools improve learning outcomes

  • Address  legal and compliance aspects of RFP submissions

  • Some experience researching and analyzing regulatory compliance matters and related contractual commitments
  • Strong business judgment by analyzing and communicating business and legal risks, and developing practical solutions to manage risk
  • Experience with building strong relationships and working with teams across a company
  • Ability to manage expectations and make decisions about how to prioritize the needs of various stakeholders
  • Commitment to develop and maintain a deep understanding of student data privacy regulations (FERPA, COPPA and similar state laws) that impact our operations
  • Certification in privacy or data security (CIPP or similar) is preferred but not required

THE INTERVIEW PROCESS

Here’s more information on what to expect from the interview process. The bulk of time will focus on you and your past experiences.  We will be asking behavioral based questions that involve you giving examples of what you have done in the past.  In your examples please be specific; describe the situation that led up to your actions, what you did (your behavior), and what happened as a result.  Take your time.  There are no right or wrong answers.
