Atticus is hiring a Remote Attorney (Leadership Rotation Program)

About Atticus

At any given time, 16 million Americans are experiencing a crisis that requires urgent help from our legal system or government. The right assistance could transform their lives. But today, most never get it.

Atticus makes it easy for any sick or injured person in crisis to get the life-changing aid they deserve. In just three years, we’ve become the leading platform connecting people with disabilities to government benefits. We also help victims of accidents, misconduct, and violence get compensation from insurance. So far, we’ve gotten thousands of people access to over $2B in life-changing aid, and we’re just getting started.

We've helped more than 20,000 people in need (see our 6,000+ five-star reviews) and raised more than $50 million from top VC firms like Forerunner, GV (Google Ventures), and True Ventures. (We just closed our Series B round in May 2023, so we're well-funded for the foreseeable future.) We're small but moving fast — our team grew from 52 to 91 last year and we expect to grow again in 2024.

The Job

We hire smart lawyers and set them loose on hard problems — most of which have nothing to do with traditional legal practice.

Because legal expertise and lawyer relationships are deeply embedded in everything we do, we’ve found that attorneys thrive here in roles most startups would never give them: building digital products, leading customer service teams, running sales, setting strategy, among others. So we hire great folks and empower them. Over the last two years, we’ve attracted lawyers from firms like Munger Tolles, Hueston Hennigan, Quinn Emanuel, Gunderson Dettmer, and Cravath — and schools like Harvard, Stanford, UChicago, and UVA. Most have been promoted once or twice already and play critical roles across all functions.

As a result, we created the Attorney Leadership Rotation Program: a role that allows attorneys to transition from traditional legal practice to the business and technology sectors, gain exposure and experience across core parts of our business, and take ownership for company priorities. In your first year you will design and shape your own rotations through 3-4 areas across Atticus, creating a portfolio of projects that could include product design, legal research and opinion writing, serving clients, and providing legal advice.

Options for this first year could include:

  • Client service & experience: Intake, advise and refer our clients; provide legal advice to dozens of needy people every week, and handle complex situations requiring prudent judgment (we’ll provide all the training you need).
  • Lawyer sales & management: Vet, sell, and onboard our partner law firms; track their compliance with service level agreements and provide coaching and feedback to strengthen their operations.
  • Direct representation: Own all aspects of disability cases from intake to hearing, developing evidence, working with clients, and winning them benefits.
  • Privacy compliance strategy: Research, refine, and defend our regulatory compliance strategy; work with teams across the company to develop and implement risk mitigation plans.

After your first year you will specialize and lead any number of key business priorities. You will work with our leadership team to identify where your path goes next, but it could include:

  • Launching a new field of law and managing its profit & loss
  • Building and managing a new offering for lawyers (e.g., a CLE program)
  • Transitioning to a leadership role such as General Manager, Managing Attorney, or Deputy General Counsel
  • Specializing in any of the above departments and functions

This program is a unique opportunity to do meaningful social impact work as an attorney in a rapidly scaling startup with smart and caring coworkers where we put a premium on work-life balance. Your path from here could include growing as an executive at Atticus or transitioning further into tech/business as a founder or executive.

Qualifications

Required:

  • You have 3-5 years of experience at a top law firm, government agency, or non-profit where you exhibited a track record of achievement.
  • You have a degree from a top law school where you demonstrated strong academic performance and are admitted to at least one state bar.
  • You are comfortable in a variety of interpersonal conversations; you can be empathetic and kind when speaking with average people in a moment of crisis, and can be thoughtful and organized when interacting with other attorneys.
  • You are a resourceful team-player ready to dive into a scrappy startup environment where you will get your hands dirty; you’re eager to take on tasks ranging from strategic priorities to tactical necessities.
  • You excel at building strong relationships and working with teams across a company.
  • You have a demonstrated commitment to doing good and helping people.

Bonus / Nice-to-Have:

  • You have several years of meaningful work experience prior to attending law school, especially in business environments.
  • You have experience at a startup or other fast-paced, agile environment.

We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you’re from a background that’s underrepresented in tech or law, we’d love to meet you.

Salary and Benefits

This is a rare opportunity to join a startup that has strong traction (substantial funding, well-respected backers, tremendous growth, and many happy customers) but is still small enough that you can have a huge impact and play a role in shaping our culture. We’re a certified B Corporation tackling a critical social problem. Our mission to help people in need drives everything we do, and your work here will touch many lives.

We offer competitive pay — including equity — and generous benefits:

  • Medical and dental insurance with 100% of employee premiums covered
  • 15 vacation days & ~19 paid holidays each year (including two weeks at end-of-year)
  • Free membership to OneMedical
  • $1,000 reimbursable stipend for education and training outside of work
  • Student loan repayment assistance, 401(k), and optional HSA
  • Free snacks, drinks, weekly lunches, and regular team dinners/events/retreats
  • Humble, thoughtful, smart, fun colleagues
  • Paid parental leave

We anticipate a base salary of $150,000 in addition to equity and benefits.

Location

Today, about a third of our team is in Los Angeles (where we are headquartered) and the rest are fully remote and spread across the U.S. There are two options for this job:

  • Live in Los Angeles, work a few days a week (or more) out of our beautiful office in the Arts District.
  • Live wherever, work remotely, and travel to LA (on the company dime) as needed to be with your colleagues —somewhere between monthly and quarterly.

In short: You can do this job well remotely, and we’re committed to empowering everyone with flexibility. But we care a lot about building a great culture and we think some interactions need to happen in person, so we put a lot of thought into retreats, offsites, and other ways to gather.

  • You have excellent taste, and are excited to collaborate with our growing (and incredibly talented) marketing team
  • You have experience managing both external (eg. agencies, vendors) and internal stakeholders effectively

We're small but moving fast — our team grew from 52 to 91 last year and we expect to grow again in 2024.

The Job

To provide a great experience for a client, we have to do a lot quickly: Understand their situation, identify their needs, give advice, match them with the right lawyer, connect them to that lawyer, convince both parties to work together, and formalize the arrangement — all while doing our best to make a complex and scary system feel simple, accessible, and human. We’ve had a great start, but need the help of an experienced product designer to make this experience even better for both clients and lawyers.

As a Lead Product Designer at Atticus, you’ll take ownership of user experience from the perspective of both audiences: client and lawyer. You’ll be embedded in the entire product development process, from conducting research to deeply understand and empathize with end users, all the way to working with our incredible engineers to implement beautiful, effective designs. This will be a high-impact, high-ownership role, and an opportunity to make a big difference in the lives of Americans struggling with disabilities.

While developing core user experiences, you will also have an influential role in creating systems and processes that will allow us to scale gracefully and maintain innovative and high-quality design.

Responsibilities

Deeply understand our clients and lawyers by planning and conducting generative research.

Partner closely with product and engineering teams to ship impactful, useful, and stunning features and products.

Own and understand testing and improvement of the experiences you design, through metrics and usability testing.

Work collaboratively with fellow designers to create scalable and effective systems as the team grows.

Provide and seek feedback from stakeholders and other designers to create a culture of open communication, and foster consistent, high-quality design work.

Build our brand by executing designs to a high level of polish and professionalism.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 5+ years of product design experience, from user research through wireframing, prototyping, high-fidelity and shipment
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with accolades from product managers and engineers that you have worked with
  • Ability to understand complex problems, then create iterative, creative solutions and test those solutions
  • Ability to deeply empathize with a complex, overwhelmed, and often older user-base
  • Passion for simple, easy-to-use, and beautiful software
  • Expert with Figma and prototyping
  • A design portfolio with case studies is strongly encouraged (You can add a link in the space provided, or upload a pdf in the "cover letter" section)

Bonus / Nice-to-Have:

  • Experience working at a fast-paced, growing startup
  • Experience with complex consumer services and/or two-sided marketplaces
  • Bachelor degree or equivalent in design or related field
  • Skill and/or interest in branding, motion design, illustration, print

We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you’re from a background that’s underrepresented in tech, we’d particularly love to meet you.

We’ve managed to do all of this in a way that users love, but we’ve done it by leaving some parts of the process quite manual... which means we can only scale so far.

Your job is to change that: to lead the effort to transform our product into a platform that can serve millions of people. You'll craft a strategic plan and roadmap that will enable our tech stack to scale 10x in volume we currently support and plant the seeds for 20x. The role mixes engineering strategy, architectural decisions, and people management. You will focus on leading a cross-functional team focused on building a highly performant, intuitive and secure client experience on the web for Atticus clients, lawyers, and our internal teams.

You will work with our VP of Engineering, COO, and Director of Product but work across many teams (including product, design, lawyer network, as well as client experience and marketing).

What You'll Do

  • Help your team design, build and operate Atticus’ APIs with a focus on performance and reliability
  • Plan roadmaps 3-6 months ahead but are deeply engaged on week to week operations.
  • Evaluate storage technologies and methodologies with an eye toward scalability and performance
  • Architect, design, review, and test code in a collaborative environment with other software engineers.
  • Leverage your team as multipliers for your skills to create excellent products and services
  • Train other technical leaders on the team to do as you do.

What You Need

  • You've been the best engineer in the room before and you know how to get others there.
  • You've led engineering teams with success on highly critical products.
  • You’ve been leading engineering teams for 5+ years.
  • You love fostering career growth and building a strong team culture.
  • You care deeply about operational excellence (incident management, resilient systems, high availability, etc.)
  • You proactively identify problems and opportunities and generate creative approaches to solve them.
  • You're a champion of end user products and passionately collaborate with product and design.

We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you’re from a background that’s underrepresented in tech, we’d love to meet you.

The Job

Atticus works in an industry dominated by outdated technology that is ripe for fresh thinking: our core competitors rely on massive call centers to screen clients, antiquated CRMs to track and manage cases, and paper checks to get paid (provided they’re sent to the right address).

Conversely, as a VC-backed tech company our product & engineering department powers everything we do: from creating an engaging online experience for people in crisis to providing tools for our network lawyers as they serve our clients, Atticus relies on technology to fulfill our mission.

  • Leverage your peers as multipliers for your skills to create excellent products and services.

The role is a rare opportunity to join a fast-growing Series B startup that doubles as a B-corp social enterprise. Every project you take on will help clients in need get the help they deserve, and you’ll shape our company culture as we scale. We’re looking for engineers who are excited about our mission and the challenges it entails.

Qualifications

Required:

  • You are versed in cloud computing systems (GCP, AWS, etc.) and SAAS concepts.

Bonus / Nice-to-Have

  • You have experience with Golang, Java, Python, Scala, or Ruby
  • You like working or want to work with Google Cloud Platform, Kubernetes, Docker, Git, Golang, Java
  • You are well versed in working with or want to work with GraphQL, GraphQL Federation, REST APIs and supporting network protocols

  • Free memberships to ClassPass and OneMedical
  • $1,000 reimbursable stipend for education and training outside of work
  • Student loan repayment assistance, 401(k), and optional HSA
  • Free snacks, drinks, weekly lunches, and regular team dinners/events/retreats
  • Humble, thoughtful, smart, fun colleagues

We anticipate the base salary band for this role will be between $115,000 and $180,000 in addition to equity and benefits. The salary at offer will be determined by a number of factors such as candidate’s experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity among our team.

Location & Covid

Today, about half our team are in Los Angeles and half are fully remote and spread across the U.S. There are two options for this job:

  1. Live in Los Angeles, work a few days a week (or more) out of our beautiful office in the Arts District.
  2. Live wherever, work remotely (Ideally PST hours), and travel to LA (on the company dime) as needed to be with your colleagues —somewhere between monthly and quarterly.

In short: You can do this job well remotely, and we’re committed to empowering everyone with flexibility. But we care a lot about building a great culture and we think some interactions need to happen in person, so we put a lot of thought into retreats, offsites, and other ways to gather.

As for Covid: When the pandemic started, we immediately shifted to fully remote to protect our team and shuttered our office. Today, everyone on the team is vaccinated, and many come in often (though we don’t require it). Going forward, you can expect that vaccinations will be required for all employees (unless medically unable) and that if a variant emerges that makes in-person work unsafe for vaccinated people, we’ll close our office, cease any travel, and do whatever it takes to protect and support our team.

Atticus is hiring a Remote Client Experience Associate

About Atticus

At any given time, 16 million Americans are experiencing a crisis that requires urgent help from our legal system or government. The right assistance could transform their lives. But today, most never get it.

Atticus makes it easy for any person in crisis to get the life-changing aid they deserve. In just three years, we’ve become the leading platform connecting people with disabilities to government benefits. We also help victims of accidents, misconduct, and violence get compensation from insurance. So far, we’ve gotten thousands of people access to over $2B in life-changing aid, and we’re just getting started.

We've helped more than 20,000 people in need (see our 8,000+ five-star reviews) and raised more than $50 million from top VC firms like Forerunner, GV (Google Ventures), and True Ventures. (We just closed our Series B round in May 2023, so we're well-funded for the foreseeable future.) We're small but moving fast — our team grew from 52 to 91 last year and we expect to double in size again in 2024.

The Job

Each day, hundreds of people seek our help getting disability benefits or insurance compensation. They’re intimidated by the process, unsure where to turn, and desperate for good advice.

As part of our Client Experience team, your job is to get them on the right path. You’ll spend each day communicating on the phone with clients to understand their situation, figure out whether we can help them, and advise them on the next steps. You'll become an expert on a complex and interesting field, learn to rapidly navigate our internal tech platforms and tools (Salesforce, Front, etc.), and help hundreds of ordinary people (each with a unique story) every week. You’ll be measured by and compensated for the impact you have on our clients.

This job is different from traditional customer service or sales: Our service is totally free, and clients are desperate for our help — so you'll rarely talk to an angry customer. The conversations are deeply rewarding, and clients are profoundly grateful. You will have to navigate conversations on deeply personal and sad topics, gently but quickly offer guidance, and handle many different interactions over the course of a day.

Please note: You don’t need any prior legal knowledge or experience to excel in this job.

Qualifications

Required:

  • You have a Bachelor’s degree from a top four-year university with strong academic performance.
  • You care about people and can interact with folks from all walks of life; you’re able to simultaneously be supportive to a person in crisis and quickly drive a conversation.
  • You’re a quick learner and a competent writer, able to master complex new topics and platforms when given instruction and support.
  • You have a strong work ethic and are capable of juggling multiple competing priorities.

Bonus / Nice-to-Have:

  • You’ve previously worked at a high volume, high-performing service/sales/support team from a company known for great customer service.
  • You have completed a socially-focused, hands-on internship or have significant volunteer experience.

We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you’re from a background that’s underrepresented in tech, we’d love to meet you.

We offer competitive pay — including equity, bonus, and generous benefits:

  • Medical and dental insurance with 100% of employee premiums covered
  • 15 vacation days & 16 paid holidays each year
  • Free membership to OneMedical
  • $1,000/year reimbursable stipend for education and training outside of work
  • $600/year reimbursable stipend for internet service
  • Up to $1,200/year student loan repayment assistance
  • 401(k) and optional HSA
  • Free snacks, drinks, weekly lunches, and regular team dinners/events/retreats
  • Humble, thoughtful, smart, fun colleagues

We anticipate the base salary band for this role will be between $50,000 to $60,000 in addition to equity, benefits, and an uncapped monthly bonus structure. Under the current bonus compensation plan, top performers are earning over $85,000 in total compensation. The salary at offer will be determined by a number of factors such as candidate’s experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity among our team.

Atticus is hiring a Remote Account Manager, Lawyer Network

About Atticus

At any given time, 16 million Americans are experiencing a crisis that requires urgent help from our legal system or government. The right assistance could transform their lives. But today, most never get it.

Atticus makes it easy for any sick or injured person in crisis to get the life-changing aid they deserve. In just three years, we’ve become the leading platform connecting people with disabilities to government benefits. We also help victims of accidents, misconduct, and violence get compensation from insurance. So far, we’ve gotten thousands of people access to over $2B in life-changing aid, and we’re just getting started.

We're small but moving fast — our team grew from 52 to 91 last year and we expect to grow again in 2024.

The Job

Each day, hundreds of people seek our help getting disability benefits or insurance compensation. They’re intimidated by the process, unsure where to turn, and desperate for good advice.

Atticus’s role, often, is to connect these individuals with a local law firm. These firms have deep domain expertise, and understand the particularities of their locality— from San Francisco to Tuscaloosa.

They’re all excellent practitioners of the law, but their ability to sign clients up varies considerably. It’ll be on you to bridge that gap: you’ll deeply know these firms, improve their practices, and manage any issues that arise. In doing so, you’ll transform these small businesses, giving them the tools, skills, and knowledge to grow their practices and help more people.

It’s a varied job, and a typical day might include:

  • Speaking with a few of your law firm accounts as part of a larger coaching effort to improve their practice.
  • Working with our product team to better design and implement on the many free products we provide to firms in helping them engage with clients.
  • Ideating on and implementing your own novel solutions to help out a firm (many of the tools we provide firms first begin as solutions thought up by our account managers).
  • Contributing to the development of the Lawyer Network department (we’re a department of less than 10 people, and everyone on the team is shaping the department).
  • And much more.

This job is a unique version of account management. it’s not about upselling or cross-selling or reducing churn. Instead, it’s about genuinely caring about a small business and improving them.

You’ll need to become an expert in the Atticus platform (Salesforce, Front, DocuSign, etc.), navigate conversations with everyone at a law firm, from partners to receptionists, and help hundreds of small businesses do what they do best — helping those in crisis.

Please note: You don’t need any prior legal knowledge or experience to excel in this job.

Qualifications

Required:

  • You’ve account managed, sold, or consulted with SMB accounts, ideally in a way that involved strategic performance management.
  • You’re excited for the opportunity to deeply care about and improve multiple small business, and would enjoy regularly chatting with the staff at a law firm (from receptionists to partners), and would do so with confidence and professionalism.
  • You’re able to work autonomously; you have good judgment when to escalate an issue or resolve it yourself.
  • You’re fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (or medically unable to get the vaccine).

Bonus / Nice-to-Have:

  • You’ve previously worked at a fast-growing startup or particularly high-performing service/sales/support team from a company known for great achievement.
  • You have completed a socially-focused, hands-on internship or have significant volunteer experience.

We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you’re from a background that’s underrepresented in tech, we’d love to meet you.
