Atticus is hiring a Remote Attorney (Leadership Rotation Program)

About Atticus

At any given time, 16 million Americans are experiencing a crisis that requires urgent help from our legal system or government. The right assistance could transform their lives. But today, most never get it.

Atticus makes it easy for any sick or injured person in crisis to get the life-changing aid they deserve. In just three years, we’ve become the leading platform connecting people with disabilities to government benefits. We also help victims of accidents, misconduct, and violence get compensation from insurance. So far, we’ve gotten thousands of people access to over $2B in life-changing aid, and we’re just getting started.

We've helped more than 20,000 people in need (see our 6,000+ five-star reviews) and raised more than $50 million from top VC firms like Forerunner, GV (Google Ventures), and True Ventures. (We just closed our Series B round in May 2023, so we're well-funded for the foreseeable future.) We're small but moving fast — our team grew from 52 to 91 last year and we expect to grow again in 2024.

The Job

We hire smart lawyers and set them loose on hard problems — most of which have nothing to do with traditional legal practice.

Because legal expertise and lawyer relationships are deeply embedded in everything we do, we’ve found that attorneys thrive here in roles most startups would never give them: building digital products, leading customer service teams, running sales, setting strategy, among others. So we hire great folks and empower them. Over the last two years, we’ve attracted lawyers from firms like Munger Tolles, Hueston Hennigan, Quinn Emanuel, Gunderson Dettmer, and Cravath — and schools like Harvard, Stanford, UChicago, and UVA. Most have been promoted once or twice already and play critical roles across all functions.

As a result, we created the Attorney Leadership Rotation Program: a role that allows attorneys to transition from traditional legal practice to the business and technology sectors, gain exposure and experience across core parts of our business, and take ownership for company priorities. In your first year you will design and shape your own rotations through 3-4 areas across Atticus, creating a portfolio of projects that could include product design, legal research and opinion writing, serving clients, and providing legal advice.

Options for this first year could include:

  • Client service & experience: Intake, advise and refer our clients; provide legal advice to dozens of needy people every week, and handle complex situations requiring prudent judgment (we’ll provide all the training you need).
  • Lawyer sales & management: Vet, sell, and onboard our partner law firms; track their compliance with service level agreements and provide coaching and feedback to strengthen their operations.
  • Direct representation: Own all aspects of disability cases from intake to hearing, developing evidence, working with clients, and winning them benefits.
  • Privacy compliance strategy: Research, refine, and defend our regulatory compliance strategy; work with teams across the company to develop and implement risk mitigation plans.

After your first year you will specialize and lead any number of key business priorities. You will work with our leadership team to identify where your path goes next, but it could include:

  • Launching a new field of law and managing its profit & loss
  • Building and managing a new offering for lawyers (e.g., a CLE program)
  • Transitioning to a leadership role such as General Manager, Managing Attorney, or Deputy General Counsel
  • Specializing in any of the above departments and functions

This program is a unique opportunity to do meaningful social impact work as an attorney in a rapidly scaling startup with smart and caring coworkers where we put a premium on work-life balance. Your path from here could include growing as an executive at Atticus or transitioning further into tech/business as a founder or executive.

Qualifications

Required:

  • You have 3-5 years of experience at a top law firm, government agency, or non-profit where you exhibited a track record of achievement.
  • You have a degree from a top law school where you demonstrated strong academic performance and are admitted to at least one state bar.
  • You are comfortable in a variety of interpersonal conversations; you can be empathetic and kind when speaking with average people in a moment of crisis, and can be thoughtful and organized when interacting with other attorneys.
  • You are a resourceful team-player ready to dive into a scrappy startup environment where you will get your hands dirty; you’re eager to take on tasks ranging from strategic priorities to tactical necessities.
  • You excel at building strong relationships and working with teams across a company.
  • You have a demonstrated commitment to doing good and helping people.

Bonus / Nice-to-Have:

  • You have several years of meaningful work experience prior to attending law school, especially in business environments.
  • You have experience at a startup or other fast-paced, agile environment.

We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you’re from a background that’s underrepresented in tech or law, we’d love to meet you.

Salary and Benefits

This is a rare opportunity to join a startup that has strong traction (substantial funding, well-respected backers, tremendous growth, and many happy customers) but is still small enough that you can have a huge impact and play a role in shaping our culture. We’re a certified B Corporation tackling a critical social problem. Our mission to help people in need drives everything we do, and your work here will touch many lives.

We offer competitive pay — including equity — and generous benefits:

  • Medical and dental insurance with 100% of employee premiums covered
  • 15 vacation days & ~19 paid holidays each year (including two weeks at end-of-year)
  • Free membership to OneMedical
  • $1,000 reimbursable stipend for education and training outside of work
  • Student loan repayment assistance, 401(k), and optional HSA
  • Free snacks, drinks, weekly lunches, and regular team dinners/events/retreats
  • Humble, thoughtful, smart, fun colleagues
  • Paid parental leave

We anticipate a base salary of $150,000 in addition to equity and benefits.

Location

Today, about a third of our team is in Los Angeles (where we are headquartered) and the rest are fully remote and spread across the U.S. There are two options for this job:

  • Live in Los Angeles, work a few days a week (or more) out of our beautiful office in the Arts District.
  • Live wherever, work remotely, and travel to LA (on the company dime) as needed to be with your colleagues —somewhere between monthly and quarterly.

In short: You can do this job well remotely, and we’re committed to empowering everyone with flexibility. But we care a lot about building a great culture and we think some interactions need to happen in person, so we put a lot of thought into retreats, offsites, and other ways to gather.

  • You have excellent taste, and are excited to collaborate with our growing (and incredibly talented) marketing team
  • You have experience managing both external (eg. agencies, vendors) and internal stakeholders effectively

We're small but moving fast — our team grew from 52 to 91 last year and we expect to grow again in 2024.

The Job

To provide a great experience for a client, we have to do a lot quickly: Understand their situation, identify their needs, give advice, match them with the right lawyer, connect them to that lawyer, convince both parties to work together, and formalize the arrangement — all while doing our best to make a complex and scary system feel simple, accessible, and human. We’ve had a great start, but need the help of an experienced product designer to make this experience even better for both clients and lawyers.

As a Lead Product Designer at Atticus, you’ll take ownership of user experience from the perspective of both audiences: client and lawyer. You’ll be embedded in the entire product development process, from conducting research to deeply understand and empathize with end users, all the way to working with our incredible engineers to implement beautiful, effective designs. This will be a high-impact, high-ownership role, and an opportunity to make a big difference in the lives of Americans struggling with disabilities.

While developing core user experiences, you will also have an influential role in creating systems and processes that will allow us to scale gracefully and maintain innovative and high-quality design.

Responsibilities

Deeply understand our clients and lawyers by planning and conducting generative research.

Partner closely with product and engineering teams to ship impactful, useful, and stunning features and products.

Own and understand testing and improvement of the experiences you design, through metrics and usability testing.

Work collaboratively with fellow designers to create scalable and effective systems as the team grows.

Provide and seek feedback from stakeholders and other designers to create a culture of open communication, and foster consistent, high-quality design work.

Build our brand by executing designs to a high level of polish and professionalism.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 5+ years of product design experience, from user research through wireframing, prototyping, high-fidelity and shipment
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with accolades from product managers and engineers that you have worked with
  • Ability to understand complex problems, then create iterative, creative solutions and test those solutions
  • Ability to deeply empathize with a complex, overwhelmed, and often older user-base
  • Passion for simple, easy-to-use, and beautiful software
  • Expert with Figma and prototyping
  • A design portfolio with case studies is strongly encouraged (You can add a link in the space provided, or upload a pdf in the "cover letter" section)

Bonus / Nice-to-Have:

  • Experience working at a fast-paced, growing startup
  • Experience with complex consumer services and/or two-sided marketplaces
  • Bachelor degree or equivalent in design or related field
  • Skill and/or interest in branding, motion design, illustration, print

We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you’re from a background that’s underrepresented in tech, we’d particularly love to meet you.

We’ve managed to do all of this in a way that users love, but we’ve done it by leaving some parts of the process quite manual... which means we can only scale so far.

Your job is to change that: to lead the effort to transform our product into a platform that can serve millions of people. You'll craft a strategic plan and roadmap that will enable our tech stack to scale 10x in volume we currently support and plant the seeds for 20x. The role mixes engineering strategy, architectural decisions, and people management. You will focus on leading a cross-functional team focused on building a highly performant, intuitive and secure client experience on the web for Atticus clients, lawyers, and our internal teams.

You will work with our VP of Engineering, COO, and Director of Product but work across many teams (including product, design, lawyer network, as well as client experience and marketing).

What You'll Do

  • Help your team design, build and operate Atticus’ APIs with a focus on performance and reliability
  • Plan roadmaps 3-6 months ahead but are deeply engaged on week to week operations.
  • Evaluate storage technologies and methodologies with an eye toward scalability and performance
  • Architect, design, review, and test code in a collaborative environment with other software engineers.
  • Leverage your team as multipliers for your skills to create excellent products and services
  • Train other technical leaders on the team to do as you do.

What You Need

  • You've been the best engineer in the room before and you know how to get others there.
  • You've led engineering teams with success on highly critical products.
  • You’ve been leading engineering teams for 5+ years.
  • You love fostering career growth and building a strong team culture.
  • You care deeply about operational excellence (incident management, resilient systems, high availability, etc.)
  • You proactively identify problems and opportunities and generate creative approaches to solve them.
  • You're a champion of end user products and passionately collaborate with product and design.

We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you’re from a background that’s underrepresented in tech, we’d love to meet you.

The Job

Atticus works in an industry dominated by outdated technology that is ripe for fresh thinking: our core competitors rely on massive call centers to screen clients, antiquated CRMs to track and manage cases, and paper checks to get paid (provided they’re sent to the right address).

Conversely, as a VC-backed tech company our product & engineering department powers everything we do: from creating an engaging online experience for people in crisis to providing tools for our network lawyers as they serve our clients, Atticus relies on technology to fulfill our mission.

Bonus / Nice-to-Have

  • You have experience with Golang, Java, Python, Scala, or Ruby
  • You like working or want to work with Google Cloud Platform, Kubernetes, Docker, Git, Golang, Java

We offer competitive pay — including equity — and generous benefits:

  • Medical and dental insurance with 100% of employee premiums covered
  • 15 vacation days & ~19 paid holidays each year (including two weeks at end-of-year)
  • Free memberships to ClassPass and OneMedical
  • $1,000 reimbursable stipend for education and training outside of work
  • Student loan repayment assistance, 401(k), and optional HSA
  • Free snacks, drinks, weekly lunches, and regular team dinners/events/retreats
  • Humble, thoughtful, smart, fun colleagues

We anticipate the base salary band for this role will be between $115,000 and $180,000 in addition to equity and benefits. The salary at offer will be determined by a number of factors such as candidate’s experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity among our team.

Location & Covid

Today, about half our team are in Los Angeles and half are fully remote and spread across the U.S. There are two options for this job:

  1. Live in Los Angeles, work a few days a week (or more) out of our beautiful office in the Arts District.
  2. Live wherever, work remotely (Ideally PST hours), and travel to LA (on the company dime) as needed to be with your colleagues —somewhere between monthly and quarterly.

In short: You can do this job well remotely, and we’re committed to empowering everyone with flexibility. But we care a lot about building a great culture and we think some interactions need to happen in person, so we put a lot of thought into retreats, offsites, and other ways to gather.

As for Covid: When the pandemic started, we immediately shifted to fully remote to protect our team and shuttered our office. Today, everyone on the team is vaccinated, and many come in often (though we don’t require it). Going forward, you can expect that vaccinations will be required for all employees (unless medically unable) and that if a variant emerges that makes in-person work unsafe for vaccinated people, we’ll close our office, cease any travel, and do whatever it takes to protect and support our team.

About Atticus

At any given time, 16 million Americans are experiencing a crisis that requires urgent help from our legal system or government. The right assistance could transform their lives. But today, most never get it.

Atticus makes it easy for any person in crisis to get the life-changing aid they deserve. In just three years, we’ve become the leading platform connecting people with disabilities to government benefits. We also help victims of accidents, misconduct, and violence get compensation from insurance. So far, we’ve gotten thousands of people access to over $2B in life-changing aid, and we’re just getting started.

We've helped more than 20,000 people in need (see our 8,000+ five-star reviews) and raised more than $50 million from top VC firms like Forerunner, GV (Google Ventures), and True Ventures. (We just closed our Series B round in May 2023, so we're well-funded for the foreseeable future.) We're small but moving fast — our team grew from 52 to 91 last year and we expect to double in size again in 2024.

The Job

The conversations are deeply rewarding, and clients are profoundly grateful. Atticus is hiring a Remote Account Manager, Lawyer Network

About Atticus

At any given time, 16 million Americans are experiencing a crisis that requires urgent help from our legal system or government. The right assistance could transform their lives. But today, most never get it.

Atticus makes it easy for any sick or injured person in crisis to get the life-changing aid they deserve. We're small but moving fast — our team grew from 52 to 91 last year and we expect to grow again in 2024.

The Job

Each day, hundreds of people seek our help getting disability benefits or insurance compensation. They’re intimidated by the process, unsure where to turn, and desperate for good advice.

Atticus’s role, often, is to connect these individuals with a local law firm. These firms have deep domain expertise, and understand the particularities of their locality— from San Francisco to Tuscaloosa.

They’re all excellent practitioners of the law, but their ability to sign clients up varies considerably. It’ll be on you to bridge that gap: you’ll deeply know these firms, improve their practices, and manage any issues that arise. In doing so, you’ll transform these small businesses, giving them the tools, skills, and knowledge to grow their practices and help more people.

It’s a varied job, and a typical day might include:

  • Speaking with a few of your law firm accounts as part of a larger coaching effort to improve their practice.
  • Working with our product team to better design and implement on the many free products we provide to firms in helping them engage with clients.
  • Ideating on and implementing your own novel solutions to help out a firm (many of the tools we provide firms first begin as solutions thought up by our account managers).
  • Contributing to the development of the Lawyer Network department (we’re a department of less than 10 people, and everyone on the team is shaping the department).
  • And much more.

This job is a unique version of account management. it’s not about upselling or cross-selling or reducing churn. Instead, it’s about genuinely caring about a small business and improving them.

You’ll need to become an expert in the Atticus platform (Salesforce, Front, DocuSign, etc.), navigate conversations with everyone at a law firm, from partners to receptionists, and help hundreds of small businesses do what they do best — helping those in crisis.

Please note: You don’t need any prior legal knowledge or experience to excel in this job.

Qualifications

Required:

  • You’ve account managed, sold, or consulted with SMB accounts, ideally in a way that involved strategic performance management.
  • You’re excited for the opportunity to deeply care about and improve multiple small business, and would enjoy regularly chatting with the staff at a law firm (from receptionists to partners), and would do so with confidence and professionalism.
  • You’re able to work autonomously; you have good judgment when to escalate an issue or resolve it yourself.
  • You’re fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (or medically unable to get the vaccine).

Bonus / Nice-to-Have:

  • You’ve previously worked at a fast-growing startup or particularly high-performing service/sales/support team from a company known for great achievement.
  • You have completed a socially-focused, hands-on internship or have significant volunteer experience.

We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you’re from a background that’s underrepresented in tech, we’d love to meet you.

Atticus is hiring a Remote Senior Software Engineer, Frontend

About Us

At any given time, 16 million Americans are experiencing a crisis that requires urgent help from our legal system or government. The right assistance could transform their lives. But today, most never get it.

Atticus makes it easy for any person in crisis to get the life-changing aid they deserve. In just three years, we’ve become the leading platform connecting people with disabilities to government benefits. We also help victims of accidents, misconduct, and violence get compensation from insurance. So far, we’ve gotten thousands of people access to over $2B in life-changing aid, and we’re just getting started.

We've helped more than 20,000 people in need (see our 6,000+ five-star reviews) and raised more than $50 million from top VC firms like Forerunner, GV (Google Ventures), and True Ventures. (We just closed our Series B round in May 2023, so we're well-funded for the foreseeable future.) We're small but moving fast — our team grew from 32 to 60 last year and we expect to double in size again in 2023.

We’re looking for Software Engineers to join our team. You’ll work on the front-end, and will partner with every department at Atticus as we continue to grow our platform to help people in need find trusted legal support.

What You'll Do:

  • Design, build and operate Atticus’ front-end applications written in React with a focus on performance, modularity, extensibility, and reliability.
  • Architect, design, write, review, and test code in a collaborative environment with other software engineers.
  • Work with product to evaluate and refine product details and acceptance criteria
  • Evaluate new front-end technologies and methodologies with an eye toward scalability and performance.
  • Leverage your peers as multipliers for your skills to create excellent products and services.

The role is a rare opportunity to join a fast-growing Series B startup that doubles as a B-corp social enterprise. Every project you take on will help clients in need get the help they deserve, and you’ll shape our company culture as we scale. We’re looking for engineers who are excited about our mission and the challenges it entails.

Who You Are:

  • You write idiomatic JavaScript/Node.js; Golang, Java, Python, Scala, or Ruby is helpful.
  • You have experience and love for building performant React applications
  • You speak CSS and HTML fluently and know how to build around browser limitations
  • You enjoy working with UI and UX experts to build compelling user experiences
  • You enjoy helping your teammates grow their front-end skillset
  • You use a modern version-control system for your source code repository (Git, Mercurial, GitHub, BitBucket).
  • You lint all your code or know you should.
  • You know what parts of your code require tests and you write those tests.
  • You use objective judgment in leveraging the right frameworks and technologies.
  • You are versed in cloud computing systems (GCP, AWS, etc.) and SAAS concepts.
  • You leverage continuous integration systems to their full extent (CircleCI, Bamboo, Jenkins, TravisCI).
  • You plan for, build, evolve and scrutinize monitoring and alerting for your production systems.
  • You are willing and able to deploy, troubleshoot, and maintain your systems in production and staging environments.

Extra Credit:

  • You like working with Google Cloud Platform, Kubernetes, Docker, Git, Golang, Java
  • You are well versed in working with GraphQL, GraphQL Federation, REST APIs and supporting network protocols
  • You can build a great Webpack configuration

We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you’re from a background that’s underrepresented in tech, we’d love to meet you!

We anticipate the base salary band for this role will be between $170,000 to $220,000 in addition to equity and benefits. The salary at offer will be determined by a number of factors such as candidate’s experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity among our team.

Location & Covid

Today, about half our team are in Los Angeles or Phoenix (where we have offices) and half are fully remote and spread across the U.S. There are two options for this job:

  1. Live in Los Angeles, work a few days a week (or more) out of our beautiful office in the Arts District.
  2. Live wherever, work remotely, and travel to LA (on the company dime) as needed to be with your colleagues —somewhere between monthly and quarterly.

Account Lead, Lawyer Network

Atticus is hiring a Remote Account Lead, Lawyer Network

At any given time, 16 million Americans are experiencing a crisis that requires urgent help from our legal system or government. The right assistance could transform their lives. But today, most never get it.

About Atticus

Atticus makes it easy for any person in crisis to get the life-changing aid they deserve. In just three years, we’ve become the leading platform connecting people with disabilities to government benefits. We also help victims of accidents, misconduct, and violence get compensation from insurance. So far, we’ve gotten thousands of people access to over $2B in life-changing aid, and we’re just getting started.

We've helped more than 30,000 people in need (see our 6,000+ five-star reviews) and raised more than $50 million from top VC firms like Forerunner, GV (Google Ventures), and True Ventures. (We just closed our Series B round in May 2023, so we're well-funded for the foreseeable future.) We're small but moving fast — our team grew from 32 to 60 last year and we expect to double in size again in 2023.

Required:

  • You’ve account managed or sold into enterprise accounts, ideally in a way that involved strategic performance management.

  • You’ve previously worked at a fast-growing startup or particularly high-performing service/sales/support team from a company known for great customer service.
  • You have completed a socially-focused, hands-on internship or have significant volunteer experience.

We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you’re from a background that’s underrepresented in tech, we’d love to meet you.

  • Free snacks, drinks, weekly lunches, and regular team dinners/events/retreats
  • Humble, thoughtful, smart, fun colleagues

We anticipate the base salary band for this role will be between $70,000 - $100,000 in addition to equity and benefits. The salary at offer will be determined by a number of factors such as candidate’s experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity among our team. We're a small team that's quickly growing: we anticipate quick promotions and raises for those that succeed in this role.

The team that finds and manages these firms is called the Lawyer Network.

As an attorney on our Lawyer Network team, your job is to find these firms, vet them for quality, convince them to join our network, and then work with them to improve their businesses. It’s a varied job, and typical day might include:

Sourcing, Vetting, and Selling:

  • Finding quality law firms isn’t easy (it’s a big reason for why we exist)! Your job is to scour trade groups, forums, reviews, and our own network to find the very best.
  • Once you do find them, you’ll then need to explain what we are (we’re unique, and most firms aren’t familiar with our model), while vetting them for quality — we only work with firms we’d refer a family member to.
  • It’s a unique version of sales that mixes selling with vetting and business development.

Account Management:

  • Atticus only succeeds when a network firm wins a client's case, so the Lawyer Network works hard to improve our firms’ ability to win cases.
  • This includes deeply understanding how the best firms operate and then sharing that information across our network. It also includes bettering Atticus’ internal product for law firms.
  • This, like our selling function, is a unique version of account management: this role is about building deep relationships with our firms and working together as partners.

Other startup things:

  • Cross-functional work: The Lawyer Network acts as the voice for our law firm partners across Atticus. This means we’re often brought into cross-functional projects, including working closely with our product and design team to develop tools for firms, advising marketing on how to best voice the value our firms provide, and working with finance to make sure we’re paid on time, among other projects.
  • Special projects: We’re a small team, and there’s a ton we need to do, much of which is hard to categorize in a job description. Your future projects might include standing up a new legal vertical, interviewing law firms to better understand how we can assist them, bringing new legal products to market, and much more.

This job is a unique opportunity to do meaningful social impact work as an attorney in a rapidly scaling startup with smart and caring coworkers where we put a premium on work-life balance.

You’ll be one of the first one hundred employees at Atticus, one of the founding ten members of the Lawyer Network, and the first lawyer directly hired to this team. If you excel, you’ll be promoted quickly because there’s so much still to do. Your path from here could include growing as an executive at Atticus or transitioning further into tech/business as a founder or executive.

Qualifications

Required:

  • You have 2 to 5 years of experience at a top law firm, U.S. government agency, or non-profit organization where you exhibited a track record of achievement.
  • You have a degree from a top U.S. law school with strong academic performance, and you are currently admitted to the bar association in a U.S. state.
  • You’d enjoy regularly chatting with the staff at a law firm (from receptionists to partners), and would do so with confidence and professionalism.
  • You are a resourceful team-player ready to dive into a scrappy startup environment where you will get your hands dirty; you’re eager to take on tasks ranging from strategic priorities to tactical necessities.
  • You have a demonstrated commitment to doing good and helping people.

Bonus / Nice-to-Have:

  • You have several years of meaningful work experience prior to attending law school, especially in client service, sales, or business environments.

We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you’re from a background that’s underrepresented in tech, we’d love to meet you.

Growing the number of clients we serve at Atticus is one of the hardest and most rewarding things we do. In a typical week, you might do any or all of the following:

  • Help create the strategy for growing our client acquisition machine as we scale Atticus from Series B to owning the market

  • Research the landscape of potential marketing partners, engage them, and set up pilots to test marketing Atticus services on their platforms.

  • Develop a new set of dashboards to measure performance of campaigns across acquisition channels

The role is a rare opportunity to join a fast-growing Series B startup in a position that mixes growth marketing execution and innovation, encourages mentorship from leaders across a variety of disciplines, and prioritizes autonomy to shape our acquisition strategy as we scale.

  • You’re a kind and thoughtful colleague who knows how to shape a great team culture and thoughtfully analyze data and communicate insights

  • You have a demonstrated commitment to doing good and helping people

Nice to have:

  • Experience using Looker, SQL, Google Analytics, and Google Tag Manager

  • Experience using Google and Meta Ads and have a track record of improving paid media campaigns.

Business Operations Lead

AtticusLos Angeles, CA or Remote

Atticus is hiring a Remote Business Operations Lead

About Atticus

At any given time, 15 million Americans are experiencing a crisis that requires urgent help from our legal system or government. The right assistance can transform their lives. But today, most never get it. Atticus is a startup on a mission to change that.

We're reinventing a broken space: the $100 billion market for legal services for individuals. Through proprietary technology, a top-tier team, and a network of the nation’s best local law firms, we've taken a rare and exclusive commodity — access to expert legal advice and referrals — and made it free and available to everyone. To clients, we're a source of trusted guidance and an easy way to find and hire a great lawyer. To lawyers, we're a source of vetted clients and a way to build a practice they love while doing good. Today, most of our work involves helping disabled Americans qualify for government benefits. We also help victims of accidents, misconduct, and violence recover by getting compensation from insurance.

We've raised $28 million from top VC firms like Forerunner (Jet, Glossier, Warby Parker) and True Ventures (Peloton, Fitbit, Ring) and help more than 1,000 clients each month (see our 3,000+ five-star reviews). We're small but moving fast — our team has grown from 16 to 50 over the past year — and we're seeking great people to help in our mission.

The Job

Our business is complex and multi-faceted: We play in an enormous space with huge barriers to entry, we have no direct competitors, and as a two-sided marketplace we have to coordinate multiple constituencies via a complex funnel with some parts that are all tech and others that are fully human. Every day we face new operating challenges that require someone to quickly gather data, make a decision, and execute.

So, in addition to software engineers, lawyers, and marketers, our team includes a bunch of ex-consultants (our CEO is a BCG alum and two other folks joined from McKinsey). To a level that’s unusual among our peer startups, we’re investing in building a top-tier Strategy & Business Operations team that oversees the core of our business and drives key projects, and we’re hiring several more consultants to join it.

This job mixes things in any good consultant’s comfort zone (devising strategy, managing and coordinating projects, gathering and analyzing data) with responsibilities unique to being an operator in a fast-growing tech company (user research, product development, growth marketing, venture finance). In a typical week you might do any of the following:

  • Work with marketing to launch and measure our first podcast ads — research the market to figure out how others handle attribution, then build a system to measure impact and decide what return we’d need to expand audio as a channel.
  • Craft an experiment to see if adding a chat function to our website boosts conversion without over-burdening our client care team; pick a provider, work with engineering to implement it, train our client-facing staff — then make it live, measure its impact, and decide whether to make it permanent or not.
  • Interview 20 partner law firms to prioritize the next set of features we’ll build, then partner with Design and Product to craft a formal roadmap and mock up wireframes for our next product launch.

The role is a rare opportunity to join a fast-growing Series A startup in a position that mixes strategy and execution, includes mentorship from people who have been in your shoes, and gives a deep exposure to startup finance and operations. It’s designed to be a path to (a) staying here and growing as an executive (including the chance to become a Product Manager), (b) heading to grad school, or (c) or starting your own company down the road.

Qualifications

We’ve gotten a lot of interest in this position so we’re seeking a particularly narrow profile in terms of tenure and firm.

Required:

  • You were/ are at a top consulting firm and have either been promoted or are about to get there.
  • You’ve led projects where you mapped complex systems, gathered and analyzed data, made recommendations, and helped design and implement solutions.
  • You’re a kind and thoughtful colleague who knows how to shape a great team culture, persuasively advocate for your ideas, and get buy-in from others.
  • You have a demonstrated commitment to doing good and helping people.

Bonus / Nice-to-Have:

  • You have experience with marketplace businesses or complex consumer services (insurance, fintech, medical, real estate, etc.).
  • You’ve done consumer-focused research or discovery work, or something else that makes you comfortable interviewing and empathizing with people from all walks of life.

We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you’re from a background that’s underrepresented in tech, we’d particularly love to meet you.

  • Up to $1,200/year student loan repayment assistance
  • 401(k) and optional HSA
  • Free snacks, drinks, weekly lunches, and regular team dinners/events/retreats
  • Humble, thoughtful, smart, fun colleagues

Attorney

AtticusLos Angeles, Remote

Atticus is hiring a Remote Attorney

About Atticus

At any given time, 16 million Americans are experiencing a crisis that requires urgent help from our legal system or government. The right assistance could transform their lives. But today, most never get it.

Atticus is a public interest law firm that makes it easy for any person in crisis to get the life-changing aid they deserve.

The Job

We hire smart lawyers and set them loose on hard problems — most of which have nothing to do with traditional legal practice.

Right now, we're looking for attorneys to join our newest team at the ground level. The Direct Representation team is single-mindedly focused on redefining what high quality representation looks like for Social Security disability applicants. The right people will have the chance to:

  • Pioneer a better approach to Social Security disability law
  • Collaborate with our product team to identify pain points and build solutions
  • Provide vulnerable clients with cutting edge legal representation at the administrative level and in federal court
  • Practice with smart, driven colleagues in a fast-paced and innovative environment

Over the last two years, we’ve attracted lawyers from firms like Munger Tolles, Hueston Hennigan, Boies Schiller, Gunderson Dettmer, and Cravath — and schools like Harvard, Stanford, and UChicago. Most have been promoted once or twice already and play critical roles across all functions.

This role is a unique opportunity to do meaningful social impact work as an attorney in a rapidly scaling startup where we put a premium on work-life balance. Your path from here could include growing as a leader at Atticus or transitioning further into tech/business as a founder or executive.

Qualifications

Required:

  • You have experience at a top law firm, government agency, or non-profit.
  • You have a degree from a top law school where you demonstrated strong academic performance.
  • You are admitted to the bar in any state.
  • You are energized by serving clients and committed to direct representation work.
  • You are a resourceful team-player ready to dive into a scrappy startup environment where you will learn quickly and get your hands dirty.
  • You have a demonstrated commitment to doing good and helping people.

Bonus / Nice-to-Have:

  • You have several years of meaningful work experience prior to attending law school, especially in client service or business environments.

We anticipate the base salary band for this role will be between $125,000 and $150,000 in addition to equity and benefits.

Atticus is hiring a Remote Paralegal/Client Manager

About Atticus

At any given time, 16 million Americans are experiencing a crisis that requires urgent help from our legal system or government. The right assistance could transform their lives. But today, most never get it.

Atticus makes it easy for any person in crisis to get the life-changing aid they deserve. In just three years, we’ve become the leading platform connecting people with disabilities to government benefits. We also help victims of accidents, misconduct, and violence get compensation from insurance. So far, we’ve gotten thousands of people access to over $2B in life-changing aid, and we’re just getting started.

The Job

Social Security disability benefits are a key feature of this country’s safety net. But when folks try to access these benefits, they find themselves pitted against the Social Security Administration — an outdated bureaucracy deadset on denying them benefits. The Direct Representation team evens the odds: we take on the SSA for our clients – and we win.

In this role, you’ll be a founding member of the Direct Representation team and work closely with our Lead Attorney and our founding Paralegal/Client Manager, as well as our CEO. You should be excited about:

  • Driving client relationships;
  • Collaborating with attorneys on case strategy;
  • Shaping evidence to win client cases;
  • Working with other teams at Atticus to improve how we serve all clients; and
  • Redefining what high quality representation looks like in disability proceedings.

This role is a rare opportunity to join a fast-growing Series B startup and gain exposure to both legal practice and business operations — and mentorship from folks who've been in your shoes. It’s designed to be a path to (a) staying at Atticus and advancing on the Direct Representation team, or (b) heading to law school or business school (we'll help you with applications and we write great recs).

Qualifications

Required:

  • You have 1+ years of experience succeeding in a professional role that required a substantial amount of client-facing work (like a case manager) or lawyer-facing work (like a paralegal).
  • You earned a degree from a top college or university where you demonstrated strong academic performance.
  • You are comfortable in a variety of interpersonal conversations; you can be empathetic and kind when speaking with average people in a moment of crisis, and can be thoughtful and organized when interacting with attorneys.
  • You are a resourceful team-player ready to dive into a scrappy startup environment where you will learn quickly and get your hands dirty.
  • You have a demonstrated commitment to doing good and helping people.

Bonus / Nice-to-Have:

  • You have professional experience helping others apply for government benefits.
  • You have experience at a startup or other fast-paced, agile environment.

We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you’re from a background that’s underrepresented in tech or law, we’d love to meet you.

Atticus is hiring a Remote Senior Product Manager

About Atticus

At any given time, 16 million Americans are experiencing a crisis that requires urgent help from our legal system or government. The right assistance could transform their lives. But today, most never get it.

Atticus makes it easy for any person in crisis to get the life-changing aid they deserve. We're small but moving fast — our team grew from 32 to 60 last year and we expect to double in size again in 2023.

We’ve managed to do all of this in a way that users love, but we’ve done it by leaving some parts of the process quite manual... which means we can only scale so far.

Your job is to change that: to lead the effort to transform our product into a platform that can serve millions of people. We’ve structured this role to provide meaningful ownership of our lawyer-facing and internal products, as well as exposure to all of our client-facing products. You'll craft a strategic plan and roadmap, then coordinate our teams — design, engineering, and client service — to implement it. You’ll own key metrics and outcomes, and get to think holistically about how to achieve them. The role mixes strategy, data analysis, product design, and a lot of people management. It's a hard job, with huge potential for impact, promotion, and building a team.

You will be tasked with owning, maintaining, and expanding our core products. We are looking for someone with a unique combination of strategic prowess and operational acumen to drive this. An ideal candidate is a self-motivated, independent problem solver who is excited to ask questions, dive into the details, make recommendations, and drive results.

You will work with ourCOO&Director of Product, but work across many teams (including the lawyer network, engineering, business operations) to adapt and develop solutions to stakeholder problems. It’s a pathway to several options, including staying here and growing as a product leader.

Responsibilities

  • Get to know our users - both clients and lawyers - and understand their needs.
  • Craft a product vision for our next phase of growth. Go deep on strategy: become an expert in our business model, current offering, and key milestones to inform your work.
  • Develop a comprehensive product roadmap and build alignment for it from the full team.
  • Implement a product development process and manage it; teach best practices to others.
  • Work with engineering and design to build and ship new products and features. Play the role of conductor, coordinating and empowering others.
  • Own key targets and metrics. Collect and analyze data, and use it to drive decision-making at a company level. Propose hypotheses, run experiments to these them, and iterate quickly.

Qualifications

Critical:

  • 3+ years of product management experience, building and shipping products at scale
  • Demonstrated success setting product vision and strategy, and the ability to speak thoughtfully about key decisions and tradeoffs you made
  • Knowledge of best practices (from past work in a high-performing organization) and the ability to instill a great product culture as we grow
  • Great communication and people skills — shown by great reviews from engineers and designers you’ve worked with
  • Mastery of analytics platforms and ability to do you own data gathering and analysis
  • A track record of running lean experiments and using data to drive decisions
  • Ability to empathize with a diverse user base, including disabled and older users
  • A demonstrated commitment to doing good and helping people

Bonus / Nice-to-Have:

  • Experience with complex consumer services and/or two-sided marketplaces
  • Experience scaling a product organization from its early days
  • Past work at a fast-growing startup.

We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you’re from a background that’s underrepresented in tech, we’d particularly love to meet you.

Atticus is hiring a Remote Senior Software Engineer, Backend

About Atticus

At any given time, 16 million Americans are experiencing a crisis that requires urgent help from our legal system or government. The right assistance could transform their lives. But today, most never get it.

Atticus makes it easy for any person in crisis to get the life-changing aid they deserve. In just three years, we’ve become the leading platform connecting people with disabilities to government benefits. We also help victims of accidents, misconduct, and violence get compensation from insurance. So far, we’ve gotten thousands of people access to over $2B in life-changing aid, and we’re just getting started.

We’re looking for Software Engineers to join our team. You’ll work on the back-end, and will partner with every department at Atticus as we continue to grow our platform in an effort to help people in need find trusted legal support.

What You'll Do:

  • Design, build and operate Atticus’ APIs with a focus on performance, modularity, extensibility, and reliability.
  • Work with product to evaluate and refine product details and acceptance criteria
  • Architect, design, write, review, and test code in a collaborative environment with other software engineers.
  • Evaluate storage technologies and methodologies with an eye toward scalability and performance.

  • You write idiomatic JavaScript, Golang, Java, Python, Scala, or Ruby.
  • You build modern, resilient and operationally sane backend systems exemplifying industry standards (HTTP REST, GraphQL, Stream processing, Big Data).
  • You enjoy teaching and mentoring teammates on backend system best practices and architecture
  • You work well with product to clarify and translate requirements for teammates

  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform, Kubernetes, Docker, CircleCI, Git, Golang, Java
  • Experience with GraphQL, GraphQL Federation, REST APIs and supporting network protocols
  • Experience with a distributed SQL platform like CockroachDB or Google Spanner
  • Experience with Hadoop, MapReduce, or other “Big Data” systems

We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you’re from a background that’s underrepresented in tech, we’d love to meet you!
