About the Job

We are seeking a Senior Engineer to join our team and contribute to the growth and success of OpenSesame’s eLearning platform. As a Senior Engineer, you’ll work across the stack to develop new features, improve existing systems, and ensure high standards of performance and scalability. At OpenSesame, we are evolving toward Extreme Programming (XP) practices, and you’ll spend much of your time pairing or mobbing with other engineers to develop solutions collaboratively as we modernize and improve our systems.

This role requires a well-rounded engineer who can move seamlessly between front-end and back-end tasks, understands cloud infrastructure, and has experience with automated deployments. You’ll mentor and support other engineers, provide technical guidance, improve team processes, and help others level up their skills.

Performance Objectives:

In your first 90 days: Get fully integrated into the team’s workflow, develop a deep understanding of the product and architecture (including legacy systems written in Drupal 7 and Angular), and start contributing to collaborative development processes.

  • Team Integration & Shared Ownership:Collaborate with the team to understand ongoing projects, key systems, and the current state of the product, with a specific focus on learning the legacy systems and their role in the platform.
  • Contribute to Team Success:Actively participate in pair programming and mob programming to develop new features and resolve issues. Ensure the code the team produces is well-tested, scalable, and maintainable.
  • Mentorship & Peer Support:Start mentoring team members by sharing insights, providing technical guidance, and supporting collaborative problem-solving. Help peers grow by offering constructive feedback and learning together through daily pairing and mobbing.
  • Improve Team Processes: Engage fully in the team’s agile ceremonies, retrospectives, and discussions. Contribute to refining XP-based processes, such as test-driven development (TDD), to enhance team productivity and satisfaction.

Within 6 months: Take on more leadership in technical decision-making, guide the team’s development practices, and ensure quality in both code and process, while deepening your understanding of legacy systems and their modernization.

  • Drive Team Decisions: Play a larger role in shaping the technical direction of the team. Work with others to ensure architectural decisions and designs reflect the collective needs of the product and its scalability, while embracing XP practices such as “YAGNI” (“You aren’t gonna need it”) and “Do the simplest thing that could possibly work.”
  • Lead by Example:Continue to engage in pairing and mobbing to lead important tasks within the context of team goals. Lead initiatives to improve systems, performance, and workflows in a way that benefits the whole team.
  • Collaborative Development: Work closely with Product and Design to ensure features meet business goals and deliver value. Facilitate collaboration within the team to break down silos and encourage collective ownership. Ensure that everyone’s voice is heard in pairing and mobbing sessions.
  • Incremental Delivery & Vertical Slicing:Help the team break down complex features into vertical slices that deliver incremental value. Encourage the team to focus on releasing small, functional increments to ensure fast feedback and continuous improvement, particularly in legacy areas where change may be more challenging.
  • Strengthen Team Dynamics: Act as a peer leader, supporting the growth and development of fellow engineers through mentoring and guiding technical decision-making in a way that aligns with the team’s XP practices. Help the team continually improve their mobbing, pairing, and TDD workflows.

By the end of your first year:Establish yourself as a technical leader within the team, while fostering a culture of shared ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Promote Team Ownership: Foster a culture of team ownership, where each member feels empowered to take initiative and contribute to the success of the team. Encourage shared responsibility for the codebase and the product, ensuring daily pairing and mobbing lead to sustainable, high-quality solutions.
  • Mentor & Develop Peers: Continue to mentor team members at all levels, helping mid-level engineers develop leadership and technical skills. Cultivate a strong sense of collaboration and knowledge-sharing within the team and across the organization through pair and mob programming.
  • Help Shape Team Strategy: Work with engineering leadership to define and implement long-term strategies for your team, ensuring that technical vision aligns with company goals. Lead initiatives that enhance the team’s ability to execute efficiently within the XP framework, focusing on continuous delivery and iterative improvement.
  • Advise Management:Provide thoughtful input to management on the team’s needs and capabilities. Identify areas where additional resources, tools, or training could help the team achieve its goals. Advocate for strategies that align with the team’s strengths and address gaps in skills or processes, ensuring the team’s long-term success and growth.

Tech Stack

This team owns and maintains our marketplace stack, built on Drupal 7 and Angular, which continues to deliver critical value to our customers. At the same time, we are actively modernizing our stack to leverage more contemporary technologies, including TypeScript, Node.js, React, and Terraform. Team members will work with both the legacy and modern systems, ensuring continuity and stability in our marketplace while contributing to its evolution.

We carefully consider a wide range of compensation factors, relying on market data to determine compensation and consider your specific job family, background, skills, and experience.

Software Engineer

SendleAustralia (Remote)

Sendle is hiring a Remote Software Engineer

Do you have a passion for building software that truly makes a difference? Are you motivated by creating the best experience for customers and making their lives easier? We'd love to talk to you! We're looking for someone to join our Product Engineering team at Sendle—a team grounded in values of collaboration, problem-solving, trust, growth, and learning.

About the tech

We believe in striking a balance between using the right tool for the job and keeping our architecture simple. Our tech stack consists of Ruby, Elixir, React, Postgres, Redis, and Kafka. We use an automated, pull request-based, continuous integration and feedback workflow. All engineers can deploy to production and we do so several times a day.

A bit about us

Sendle helps small businesses thrive by making parcel delivery simple, reliable, and affordable. We’re a B Corp and Australia’s first 100% carbon-neutral delivery service, to create a simple, user-friendly service that levels the playing field for small businesses.

Sendle is a fast-growing business with bold ambitions. We have made huge strides towards our goal of becoming the largest SMB eCommerce courier in the World, moving from a single-country operation in Australia to a successful launch and operation in the US and Canada. We also launched major partnerships with eBay and Shopify. Our work has a real impact: by powering eCommerce logistics, our software is helping real-world businesses deliver real parcels to their customers; this is more than just records in a database.

About the team

We are a team full of passionate, self-confessed nerds and general geeks. We laugh together, celebrate together, and we make wacky emojis together. Everyone truly brings their entire self to work.

We are a 100% remote engineering team and have been since the beginning, with members all around Australia. Sendle is a trusting and flexible workplace, making it a great fit for engineers who know it’s the results that matter, not time spent at the keyboard.

You can listen to this podcast with our VP of Engineering, Claire Tran, on taking small, meaningful steps into leadership.

How you'll spend your time

Engineers work in cross-functional product teams with designers, customer support, marketing, and logistics experts. At Sendle you might work on projects such as integrating with an eCommerce platform, improving the way customers manage their parcels, or integrating and connecting courier networks in innovative ways.  That means crafting solutions that are well-architected, robust, and scalable, finding the sweet spot between simplicity and maintainability.

Let's talk about you

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Is excited to build an environmentally sustainable courier business and solve customer problems
  • Loves working in a team and supporting team members
  • Has worked on production applications
  • Has good written and spoken communication skills
  • Is hungry to learn and try new things, as well as contribute to knowledge sharing

And may have one or more of these (though not required):

  • Knows their way around SQL and PostgreSQL
  • Frontend experience with React, TypeScript or another modern JavaScript framework
  • Experience with Ruby or Elixir, enough to be able to jump into a couple mid-sized code bases and find your way around

What we’re offering

  • The chance to work with a creative team in a supportive environment
  • A generous personal development budget
  • You are able to create your own work environment, connecting to a remote team from anywhere in Australia
  • EAP access for you and your immediate family, because we care about your wellbeing
  • Dedicated study time for topics that motivate you. For example, we have a group learning Rust together
  • Options through participation in Sendle’s ESOP

What matters to us

We believe that our culture is one of our most important assets. We have 5 key values that we look for in every member of our team.

  • Humble - We put others first. We embrace and seek feedback from others.
  • Honest - We speak gently but frankly. We take ownership of our mistakes and speak the truth.
  • Happy - We enjoy the journey. We are optimistic and find opportunities in all things.
  • Hungry - We aspire to make a difference. We aim high, step out of our comfort zones and tackle the hard problems.
  • High-Performing - We relentlessly deliver. We know the goal and work fearlessly towards it.

Legally, we need you to know this:

We are an equal-opportunity employer and value diversity. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

If you require accommodations due to a disability to participate in the application or interview process, please get in touch with our team at careers@sendle.com to discuss your needs.

But it’s important to us that you know this:

We strongly believe that diversity of experience contributes to a broader collective perspective that will consistently lead to a better company and better outcomes. We are working hard to increase the diversity of our team wherever we can and we actively encourage everyone to consider becoming a part of it.

If you want to be a part of something remarkable, we’re excited to hear from you.

Senior Engineer - Developer Experience

PleoSpain, Portugal and UK (fully-remote in those countries)

Pleo is hiring a Remote Senior Engineer - Developer Experience

Engineers are the backbone of all we do at Pleo. Without these wildly brilliant people, we don’t have a thing. To make them happy and productive is the goal of the Developer Experience team.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Software Engineer to join that very Developer Experience team at Pleo. This role is perfect for an engineer, who is interested in supporting other engineers and learning about their most important pain-points by working closely with them.

What will you do? In this role, you will be a force multiplier, enabling other engineers to do even better. You will not only work within a team but also look across Pleo to identify, build, and deliver systemic improvements to help everyone be better and move towards their vision.

Developer Experience is a pretty senior team which allows for good learning opportunities, but also a very open team where your thoughts and ideas are highly valued. As one team, you’ll provide frameworks, libraries, developer tools and guides to make the life of an engineer as enjoyable as possible. You’ll be building features incrementally, prioritizing early feedback and iterative development.

You know your way around:

  • Cloud environments / distributed systems / microservices (AWS, Google Cloud, Kubernetes),
  • Server-side languages (we mostly use Kotlin and TypeScript but we know you can learn new languages)
  • Testing frameworks (Cypress, Mockk, JUnit, Testcontainers) and principles
  • DevOps culture and tools (GitHub Actions, Gradle, Terraform)
  • Observability and monitoring (Datadog)
  • Relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL)

Your colleagues would say you:

    • Work in English with ease (it's our company language)
    • Never stop being curious and love learning about new languages/ frameworks/ working styles
    • Have experience solving complex technical challenges at scale
    • Ensure a high bar for quality and reliability within your team
    • Coach others to help them develop as engineers
    • Advocate for a more thorough code review process than a quick scroll to the bottom of the page and a “LGTM!”
    • Are regularly giving and receiving feedback - both positive and constructive
    • You don’t just write code; you help to design the overall solution
    • Are sought after within your team for help in solving challenging problems
    • You’re a force multiplier within your team - your work enables other engineers to do be even better
    • are able to describe technical debt faced by your team. And then able to propose a solution or path forward.

Finance teams shouldn’t be siloed from the rest of the organisation – they should work in unity with marketing, sales, IT and everyone else.

Speaking of working in unity, our values tell the story of how we work at Pleo.
